  • This study shows the result of the security assessment of the nationwide key energy facilities and suggests the ways of improving the security level. According to the study, most of the energy facilities are adequately equipped with physical security factors such as security personnel, security systems, fences, and guard posts, but lack of awareness is pervasive among those concerned, so the security operation is inefficient. In other words, inefficient deployment of security personnel, lack of the fundamental knowledge of the security systems, excessive dependence on surveillance cameras' functions such as Pan/Tilt/Zoom, misplaced cameras, low efficiency of monitoring, and irrelevant security plans. To solve these problems, above all, the authority concerned need to develop professional training programs to secure certified security mangers, and need to standardize security process to ensure consistency and to harness the standardization as a source of self assessment to improve security level.

  • With the shortage of labor force in small and medium-size industries, the Korean Employment Permit System (EPS) continues to bring migrant workers. However, the question remains of the health and safety management of their migrant workers. Considering that a significant part of safety and health problems are caused by migrant workers due to a lack of information on identifying risk and inexperience in the field. Telephone interviews were conducted to investigate the migrant workers' perspectives on workplace safety practices. The survey focused on workers' accident histories, understanding of safety practices, and responding to industrial accidents. A total of 66 accidents occurred among 30 participants. 10 accidents were not reported to the employer (company), which the foreign workers judged to be minor injuries that should not be reported as accidents. 80.0% of the participants expressed dissatisfaction with the PPE they were using. Among various reasons lack of understanding due to language barriers, lack of awareness of the importance of safety, communication difficulties were major reasons for the caused accidents and potential health issues. It is necessary to improve the safety and health support system by providing practical support through specialized educational institutes with experts in the field. A legal framework and a proper safety management system need to be maintained. This study suggests changing the current policy to improve the health and safety of migrant workers by, establishing specialized educational institutes with locally grown foreign experts in the field.

  • After the death of Min-sik Kim in Asan, South Chungcheong Province in September 2019, awareness of the school zone has been increasing, and the traffic law is being revised continuously. However, despite these efforts, the number of traffic accidents among children has not decreased significantly. This indicates the need for a new direction considering the behavioral characteristics of children and the traffic environment. Therefore, this study identified the current status and problems of school zones through case analysis of school zones in Korea. In addition, we analyzed the Vision Zero policy, the concept of Home Zone, and engineering-oriented road design cases and operation methods in Sweden, an advanced country in traffic safety. In addition, the cases of the two countries were compared and organized focusing on the basic principles of disaster prevention design. The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of design and policy to improve school zone problems in Korea. Through this, it is expected that the results of this study will be used as data for future research development for the reduction of school zone fatalities in Korea.

  • This paper is intended to investigate the awareness of the elementary school students about the natural environment preservation. For this purpose, 21 elementary school students from the 5th grade of elementary school located in Gwangju city were selected. Especially, we focused on the students' conceptions related to 1) the environments, 2) the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters and 3) the environmental preservation with the national land development. To evaluate the change of students' conceptions for the national land development, the students were also participated in establishing the plan of the national land development using the model of the natural environment after learning in detail about the natural environments. The results of this study showed that most of the students recognized the concept of the environments as a simple knowledge itself and pollution rather than the protection of environment. In the course of the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters, the students expressed standardized answer indicating the knowledge based thinking of the environments. According to the results of the environmental preservation with the national land development and the hypothetical project of the national land development, the students did not have enough knowledge for the natural environment preservation although they had understanding of natural disasters and environmental preservation. Therefore, it is necessary to stress affirmative concept for the environment related to the preservation of natural environment. Also we need to develop the syllabus, which is related to the environmental studies, in the elementary educational program leading students to participate in the environmental preservation with the national land development reasonably and practically.
