Factors Influencing Disaster Nursing Competency of Nursing Students

  • Purpose: This study examined the relationships among disaster nursing knowledge, disaster preparedness attitudes, and disaster nursing competency among nursing students by identifying the predictors of disaster nursing competency. Methods: The study participants were 306 nursing students in the nursing departments of 3 universities located in G City and J Province. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The participants' scores for disaster nursing knowledge, disaster preparedness attitudes, and disaster nursing competency were 5.41±1.68, 4.29±0.46, and 2.84±0.78, respectively. Disaster nursing knowledge, disaster preparedness attitudes, and disaster nursing competency exhibited positive correlations. The factors influencing disaster nursing competency among nursing students included disaster nursing knowledge, disaster preparedness attitudes, year level, disaster training experience, first-aid training experience, disaster area experience, medical service experience, and disaster severity awareness. These variables explained 17% of the variance in disaster nursing competency. Conclusion: Disaster nursing knowledge and disaster preparedness attitudes was positively related to disaster nursing competency. The findings of this study indicate that it is important to develop and apply education programs aimed at increasing disaster nursing knowledge and enhancing disaster preparedness attitudes among nursing students to improve nursing students' disaster nursing competency.

  • Purpose: This study aims to provide basic data to improve disaster nursing competency by identifying nursing students' disaster awareness, disaster preparedness, and disaster nursing competency and confirming the relationship among them. Research design, data, and methodology: The subjects of this study were 310 students attending the Department of Nursing at E University in Gyeonggi-do, and the data was collected from April 13 to May 24, 2023. Results: Disaster awareness averaged 72.91±7.46 points, disaster preparedness averaged 2.82±2.81 points, and disaster nursing competency averaged 44.11±10.76 points. Disaster preparedness and disaster nursing competency were significantly higher in subjects with disaster nursing education experience than in those without experience. Disaster awareness showed a significant positive correlation with disaster preparedness (r=.20, p <.001), and also with disaster nursing competency (r=.37, p <.001). Disaster preparedness showed a significant positive correlation with disaster nursing competency (r=.49, p <.001). It was found that the disaster nursing competency was high when the disaster awareness (B=0.472, p<.001), and the disaster preparedness (B=1.561, p<.001) was high. Conclusions: The results show it is possible to improve students' disaster nursing competency by strengthening education on disaster awareness and disaster preparedness. Thus, specific efforts and future research are needed to develop disaster nursing education.

국내 간호사의 재난간호 역량: 주제범위 문헌고찰 (The Competency in Disaster Nursing of Korean Nurses: Scoping Review)

  • Purpose: The aim of study was to identify ranges of Korean nurses' competency in disaster nursing. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The review used information from four databases: RISS, ScienceON, EBSCO Discovery Service, and CINAHL. In this review, key words were 'disaster', 'nurs*', 'competenc*', 'ability' and 'preparedness'. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were identified as strategies to use in this review. The inclusion criteria for this review focused on the following: Korean nurse, articles related to disaster nursing competency, peer-review articles published in the full text in Korean and English. Review articles were excluded. Results: Nineteen studies were eligible for result extraction. A total of 10 categories of disaster nursing competency were identified: Knowledge of disaster nursing, crisis management, disaster preparation, information collection and sharing, nursing record and document management, communication, disaster plan, nursing activities in disaster response, infection management, and chemical, biological, radiation, nuclear, and explosive management. Conclusion: It is necessary to distinguish between Korean nurses' common disaster nursing competency, professional disaster nursing competency, and disaster nursing competency required in nursing practice. Therefore, future research will be needed to explore and describe disaster nursing competency.

보건교사의 재난간호역량에 미치는 영향요인 (The Factors Influencing on Disaster Nursing Competency of School Health Teachers)

  • Objectives: This study aims to identify influencing factors of disaster nursing competency among school health teachers. Methods: Data were collected from 110 school health teachers at the offfice of education in G province using a convenience sampling method. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: There was a significant difference in disaster nursing competency according to the general characteristics of the subjects in terms of clinical nurse work experience (t=3.40, p=.001) and disaster education experience (t=2.80, p=.006). Disaster perception and disaster nursing competency showed a significant positive correlation (r=.43, p<.001). In final analysis, disaster perception (𝛽=.35, p<.001), career as a nurse (𝛽=.23, p=.009), experience in disaster education (𝛽=.17, p=.048) was found to have a significant effect on disaster nursing competency. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, disaster perception should be raised to improve the disaster nursing competency of school health teachers. Speicalized disaster nursing & health education based on their experience before appointing school health teachers and disaster response simulation training tailored to school field conditions should be regularly conducted.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors affecting the disaster nursing competency of nurses at a university oriental medicine hospital. Methods: The survey was conducted on 115 nurses at a university oriental medicine hospital from December 1, 2022 to January 30, 2023. Data analysis was performed using t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Factors affecting the disaster nursing competency of nurses at a university oriental medicine hospital were perception of disaster and working experience at an oriental medicine hospital. Conclusions: It is necessary to increase perception of disaster and provide disaster education appropriate for their profession in order to improve the disaster nursing competency of nurses at university oriental medicine hospital. In addition, organizational efforts are needed to increase the long-term disaster nursing competency of nurses at university oriental medicine hospitals.

보건소 방문간호사의 재난대비 및 재난간호핵심능력 영향요인 (Disaster Preparation of Visiting Nurses in Public Health Centers)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing personal disaster preparation and disaster nursing core competency among visiting nurses in public health centers. Methods: A descriptive survey study was adopted. A convenience sample was taken from 277 subjects in three regions. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Results: The mean personal disaster preparation and disaster nursing core competency scores were 11.13 and 76.87, respectively. Personal disaster preparation was statistically significant by experience of disaster victims and disaster management guideline. Disaster nursing core competency was statistically significant by participation in future disaster recovery. As a result of multiple regression analysis, personal disaster preparation accounted for 14.9 of the variance by experience of disaster victims and disaster management guidelines; disaster nursing core competency accounted for 8.9 of the variance by perception of disaster nursing. Conclusion: Although visiting nurses are ill-prepared for disaster, global natural and man-made disasters can occur regardless of time and place. Disaster education and training should therefore be included in nurses' fundamental education.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 간호대학생을 위한 재난간호역량 측정할 수 있는 도구를 개발하기 위함이다. 자료수집은 270명의 간호대학생을 대상으로 실시하였으며, 재난간호역량의 핵심개념 도출, 예비도구의 문항개발, 내용타당도 검정 및 본 조사 도구의 문항 선정, 도구의 신뢰도와 타당도 평가과정을 거쳐 재난간호지식 11문항, 재난간호기술 11문항으로 구성된 재난간호역량 도구를 개발하였다. 이 도구는 앞으로 간호학생의 재난간호 역량을 확인하고 관련 요인을 파악하는 연구에 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

국내 간호대학생 대상 재난간호 연구의 동향 : 체계적 문헌고찰 (Trends of Nursing Research on Disasters for Nursing Students in Korea: A Systematic Review)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify trends of nursing research on disaster for nursing students in Korea through a systematic review. Methods: A systematic review was conducted across international and domestic electronic databases, and 13 of 506 studies were identified for this review. Results: The most commonly used variables in the study were 'disaster nursing competency (23.5%)' and 'disaster awareness (20.6%)'. In addition, the major factors influencing the disaster nursing competency of nursing students were analyzed as 'disaster preparedness'. However, many tools were developed for the needs of researchers rather than those that were sufficiently valid and reliable. Also, most studies did not use the theoretical framework. Conclusion: There is necessary to develop an instrument with confirmed reliability and validity to measure disaster nursing competency of nursing students. Finally, disaster education and research should be conducted based on the theoretical framework to enhance the disaster nursing competency of nursing students.

보건소 직원의 재난대비역량에 관한 연구 (A Study on Disaster Preparedness Competency in Public Health Center Workers)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the levels of disaster preparedness competency in public health workers and identify influential factors on disaster preparedness competency. Methods: The data was collected through self-report questionnaires from a convenience sample of 281 public health workers in 2014 in Korea. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results: The mean disaster preparedness competency score was 2.77 and the mean disaster educational needs score was 4.01. Disaster preparedness competency had a statistically significant difference by gender, position, experience of disaster education in workplace, and experience of BLS education. As a result of the multiple regression analysis, disaster preparedness competency accounted for 11.6% of the variance by gender, experience of disaster education in workplace, and experience of BLS education. Conclusion: The results of this study reveal that gender, strengthening education of disasters in the workplace, and education of BLS should be taken into consideration and integrated when developing an effective educational program in order to enhance disaster preparedness competency in public health workers.

융합적 측면에서의 재난간호대비·대응역량 측정도구 개발 (Development of the Disaster Nursing Preparedness·Response Competency(DNPRC) Scale in terms of Convergence)

  • 본 연구는 융합적 측면에서의 간호사의 재난에 대한 대비 대응역량을 측정하기 위한 도구를 개발하고 타당도와 신뢰도를 검증하기 위해 시행되었다. ICN Framework of the Disaster Nursing Competencies를 바탕으로하여 국내 문헌 고찰을 통해 문항을 구성하였으며, 간호사 291명을 대상으로 내용타당도, 구성타당도, 수렴타당도와 신뢰도를 검정하였다. 대비역량과 대응역량을 각각 탐색적 요인분석과 확인적 요인분석을 시행하였으며, 수렴타당도는 간호사 재난대비상태 측정도구(DPQ-N)와의 상관관계를 Pearson's correlation test로 분석하였다. 본 연구결과, 재난간호대비 대응역량 측정도구는 5점 Likert 척도로서, 대비역량 3개 영역의 16문항, 대응역량 4개 영역의 18문항의 총 34문항으로 구성되었으며, 신뢰도는 Cronbach's ${\alpha}=.96$이었다. 본 연구는 향후 간호사의 재난간호역량을 확인하고 관련요인을 파악하는 연구와, 간호사의 재난간호역량 향상을 위한 간호중재개발에 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
