  • In this paper, we define new quaternionic associated curves called quaternionic principal-direction curves and quaternionic principal-donor curves. We give some properties and relationships between Frenet vectors and curvatures of these curves. For spatial quaternionic curves, we give characterizations for quaternionic helices and quaternionic slant helices by means of their associated curves.

  • In this paper, we design directional search pattern using motion direction biased characteristics of MVP distribution, and proposes a direction applied cross diamond search method that adaptively change search pattern according to moving direction of search point. Proposed method predict motion vectors from neighbor macro blocks, and define initial motion direction by using predicted motion vectors. It improve search efficiency by using alternately proposed search pattern according to motion direction of BMP in search process. The simulation results show that proposed method is able to fast motion estimation compared with conventional cross diamond search, according as it reduce computational complexity that is required of motion estimation with $0.43%{\sim}1.76%$.

  • The Hotelling transform is based on statistical properties of an image. The principal uses of this transform are in data compression. The basic concept of the Hotelling transform is that the choice of basis vectors pointing the direction of maximum variance of the data. This property can be used for rotation normalization. Many objects of interest in pattern recognition applications can be easily standardized by performing a rotation normalization that aligns the coordinate axes with the axes of maximum variance of the pixels in the object. However, this transform can not be used to rotation normalization of color images directly. In this paper, we propose a new method for rotation normalization of color images based on the Hotelling transform. The Hotelling transform is performed to calculate basis vectors of each channel. Then the summation of vectors of all channels are processed. Rotation normalization is performed using the result of summation of vectors. Experimental results showed the proposed method can be used for rotation normalization of color images effectively.

  • We briefly review three Raleigh type location tests based on direction vectors, which have been shown to be efficient when the distribution is unknown, skewed, or heavy-tailed. Then we calculate their test breakdown points and discuss the robustness of Randles multivariate sign test for one-sample.

  • Any object located in the earth's gravitational field experiences a force in the direction of the center of the earth. In order to describe the motion of objects in the field, the solutions to a system of simultaneous vector kinematic equations need to be obtained. In the analysis of freely-falling objects, the reference direction +y is usually defined to be the downward direction. In the analysis of the motion of objects thrown upward, the reference direction +y is usually defined to be the upward direction. In the analysis of the motion of objects thrown downward, the reference direction +y is usually defined to be the downward direction. In this paper, we show that the choice of reference axis in either upward or direction gives the same results by adopting a scalar product of two vectors in solving the vector kinematic equations. It is rare to find other examples of using a scalar product of two vectors in solving vector kinematic equations describing the motion of objects. An application of this study is that we can arbitrarily choose the reference direction for objects moving in a horizontal direction, including projectile motions.

  • The self-organizing feature map(SOFM) among a number of neural network uses a randomized small valued initial weight vectors, selects the neuron whose weight vector best matches input as the winning neuron, and trains the weight vectors such that neurons within the activity bubble are moved toward the input vector. On the other hand, the modified method in this research uses a predetermined initial weight vectors of the 1-dimensional string, gives the systematic input vector whose position best matches obstacles, and trains the weight vectors such that neurons within the activity bubble are move toward the opposite direction of input vector. According to simulation results one can conclude that the method using string and the modified neural network is useful tool to mobile robot for the global path planning.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that converts motion vectors on MPEG coded domain as a uniform set, independent of the frame type and the direction of prediction, and directly utilizes these normalized motion vectors for understanding video contents. This frame-type-independent motion vectors are utilized as feature information for image retrieval or moving object tracking on compressed domain. By simulation, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method and compare its performance to the conventional method.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this paper are to develop a theoretical basis that the beam directions should be considered when the mechanical accuracy of teletherapy machine is evaluated by the star pattern test, to develop methods using asymmetric field in length to simulate beam direction for the case that beam direction does not appear on film. Method: In evaluating mechanical rotational accuracy of the gantry of teletherapy unit by the star pattern test, the direction of radiation beams was considered. A star pattern using some narrow beams was made. Density profiles at 10cm far from estimated gantry axis on the star pattern were measured using an optical densitometer. On each profile, one coordimate of a beam axis was determined. A pair of coordinates on a beam axis form an equation of the axis. Assume that a unit vector equation omitted is with same direction as radiation beam and a vector equation omitted is a vector directing to the beam axis from the estimated gantry axis. Then, a vector product equation omitted ${\times}$ equation omitted is an area vector of which the absolute value is equal to the distance from the estimated gantry axis to the beam axis. The coordinate of gantry axis was obtained by using least-square method for the area vectors relative to the average of whole area vectors. For the axis, the maximum of absolute value of area vectors would be an accuracy of the gantry rotation axis. For the evaluation of mechanical accuracies of collimator and couch axes for which beam direction could not be depicted on a star pattern test film, narrow beams asymmetric in field length was used to simulate beam direction. Result: For a star test pattern to evaluate the mechanical accuracy of rotational axes of a telectherapy machine, the result considering beam direction was different from that ignoring beam direction. For the evaluation of mechanical accuracies of collimator and couch axes by means of a star pattern test, narrow asymmetric beams could simulate beam direction. Conclusion: When a star pattern test is used to evaluate the mechanical accuracy of a teletherapy unit, beam direction must be considered or simulated, and quantitatively evaluated.

  • There has been increasing interest in broadband services to mobile terminals. Wireless ATM will be used to support broadband services for future generation mobile service. We propose an algorithm for handover in wireless ATM LANs. We have studied how to treat the loop cancellation and optimization of path extension handover scheme, and present path optimization algorithms : polyangular loop cancellation and triangular loop cancellation. We express the location of MT(mobile terminal) by direction angle, and the direction angles can be converted into direction vectors. Using direction vectors, we can find the current optimal path of MT. The analysis and the experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides the better performance than that of anchor rerouting scheme in average handover delay, handover disruption delay, and buffer requirements.
