We have prepared FePtCu L10 bit patterned media, of which magnetic properties and microstructural details are obtained by direct measurement and observations. The patterning process on the continuous film induced a drastic changes in the coercivity, SFD, and angular dependencies. The origin of the changes are explained by micromagnetic simulations with the finite element models including the details of the microstructures.
Partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics in order to develop a prediction model for turbulent flame lift off. The essence of flame hole dynamics is derivation of the random walk mapping, from the flame-edge theory, which governs expansion or contraction of flame holes initially created by local quenching events. The numerical simulation for flame hole dynamics is carried out in two stages. First, a direct numerical simulation is performed for constant-density fuel-air channel mixing layer to obtain the turbulent flow and mixing fields, from which a time series of two dimensional scalar dissipation rate array is extracted at a fixed virtual flame surface horizontally extending from the end of split plate to the downstream. Then, the Lagrangian simulation of the flame hole random walk mapping projected to the scalar dissipation rate array yields temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its statistics on partial quenching characteristics. The statistical results exhibit that the chance of partial quenching is strongly influenced by the crossover scalar dissipation rate while almost unaffected by the iteration number of the mapping that can be regarded as a flame-edge speed.
This study presents a direct adaptive controller which is derived by using Lyapunovs direct methods for trajectory tracking control of a pneumatic cylinder. The structure of the controller is very simple and computationally efficient because it does not use either the dynamic model or the parameter values of the pneumatic system. The bounded stability of the system is shown in the presence of the bounded unmodeled dynamics. The bounded size of tracking errors can be made arbitrarily small without giving andy influences on either input or output variables. The trajectory tracking performance and the stability of the control system is verified experimentally. The results of the experiments show that the proposed controller tracks the given trajectories, sine function and cycloidal function trajectories, more accurately than PD controller does, and it stabilizes the system and adaptive variables.
In this paper, as a part of the method improving stability, the load-flow calculation in D.C. power system and the models for stability analysis are studied with A.C-D.C. interconnected power systems transmission performed. Moreover, the theory is established in relation to each control method of D.C. power systems. Then the stability of A.C-D.C.interconnected power systems is compared and considered by the way of dividing the operating control method of the rectifier inverter converter into ACR-AVR, APR-A.gamma.R, A.alpha.R-ACR. The dynamics characteristic of terminal voltage, frequency, active-reactive power and rotor angle of the generator with disturbances and load fluctuations is considered. In addition, the characteristic of direct voltage, direct current, power and control systems. From this the comparative analysis of the direct current control method, the possibility of the stability analysis of A.C.-D.C. interconnected power system is considered. Direct-contact heat transfer of a single saturated droplet upon colliding with a heated wall in the regime of film boiling was experimentally investigated using high-resolution infrared thermometry technique. This technique provides transient local wall heat flux distributions during the entire collision period. In addition, various physical parameters relevant to the mechanistic modelling of these phenomena can be measured. The obtained results show that when single droplets dynamically collide with a heated surface during film boiling above the Leidenfrost point temperature, typically determined by droplet collision dynamics without considering thermal interactions, small spots of high heat flux due to localized wetting during the collision appear as increasing Wen. A systematic comparison revealed that existing theoretical models do not consider these observed physical phenomena and have lacks in accurately predicting the amount of direct-contact heat transfer. The necessity of developing an improved model to account for the effects of local wetting during the direct-contact heat transfer process is emphasized.
A robust direct adaptive controller with respect to additive and multiplicative unmodeled dynamics is designed. A new term, proportional to the product of the bounded tracking error and normalizing signal, is added to the conventional control input for improvement of robustness and performances of an adaptive system. It is shown by the mathematical analysis and simulation results that the stability of the closed loop system is guaranteed and the performance of the system is improved.
Robustness of a model refernece direct adaptive pole placement control for not necessarily minimum phase systems is studied subject to unmodeled dynamics and bounded disturbances. The adaptive control scheme involves two estimators for the system and the controller parameter estimation, respectively. The robustness is obtaind under some weak assumptions and by using both a normalized least-squares algorithm with dead zone and an appropriate nonlinear feedback.

This paper demonstrates that the largest Lyapunov exponent λ of recurrent neural networks can be controlled efficiently by a stochastic gradient method. An essential core of the proposed method is a novel stochastic approximate formulation of the Lyapunov exponent λ as a function of the network parameters such as connection weights and thresholds of neural activation functions. By a gradient method, a direct calculation to minimize a square error (λ - λ$\^$obj/)$^2$, where λ$\^$obj/ is a desired exponent value, needs gradients collection through time which are given by a recursive calculation from past to present values. The collection is computationally expensive and causes unstable control of the exponent for networks with chaotic dynamics because of chaotic instability. The stochastic formulation derived in this paper gives us an approximation of the gradients collection in a fashion without the recursive calculation. This approximation can realize not only a faster calculation of the gradient, but also stable control for chaotic dynamics. Due to the non-recursive calculation. without respect to the time evolutions, the running times of this approximation grow only about as N$^2$ compared to as N$\^$5/T that is of the direct calculation method. It is also shown by simulation studies that the approximation is a robust formulation for the network size and that proposed method can control the chaos dynamics in recurrent neural networks efficiently.
This article describes the research work involving the implementation of an Active Bracing System aimed at the modification of the initial dynamics of a laboratorial building structure to a new desired dynamics. By means of an adequate control force it is possible to assign an entirely new dynamics to a system by moving its natural frequencies and damping ratios to different values with the purpose of achieving a better overall structural response to external loads. In Civil Engineering applications, the most common procedures for controlling vibrations in structures include changing natural frequencies in order to avoid resonance phenomena and increasing the damping ratios of the critical vibration modes. In this study, the actual implementation of an active system is demonstrated, which is able to perform such modifications in a wide frequency range; to this end, a plane frame physical model with 4 degrees-of-freedom is used. The Active Bracing System developed is actuated by a linear motor controlled by an algorithm based on pole assignment strategy. The efficiency of this control system is verified experimentally by analyzing the control effect obtained with the modification of the initial dynamic parameters of the plane frame and observing the subsequent structural response.
An important factor of rough road modeling is analyzing the shear behavior properties of the rough road. These properties influence the drawbar pull of the tool when interacting with the soil used in agriculture. Furthermore, shear behavior properties are important because sinkage and shear stress are generated when wheels drive on rough roads. In this study, we performed a direct shear test to investigate the shear behavior properties of soils and compare with the direct shear simulation; shear force derived by the coupled analysis of discrete element method; and multi-body dynamics. Soil contact parameters were measured in a wheel and soil contact simulation followed by comparison of the simulated and experimentally measured shear force.
