  • Moisture loss of fresh fruits and vegetables is a main cause of deterioration. It resulted not only in the direct quantitative loss, but also in change in appearance, texture and nutrition. To reduce the loss of moisture content during the distribution in the market, fresh products are packaged using plastic films. But, most of the fresh products are packaged manually in Korea. In order to minimize the labor requirement, the packaging machine for fruits and vegetables was developed and tested. Prototype was composed of film feeding unit, bag former, products feeding conveyor, film feeding roller, center sealer, end sealer and discharge conveyor. Green peppers, carrots and perilla leaves were tested with prototype. Prototype could pack 1780, 1390, 1780 bags per hour at the feeding speed of 0.08m/s respectively and 2250, 1810, 2640bags per hour at the feeding speed of 0.10m/s respectively. And packaging speed of green peppers and carrots was improved by 3.7 and 3.4 times compared with manual packaging. The packaging condition with the prototype was good and the products had almost no damages.

  • This paper discusses the elimination of DC voltage deviation and the enhancement of load current sharing accuracy in multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MT-HVDC) systems. In order to minimize the power line losses in different parallel network topologies and to insure the stable operation of systems, a decentralized control method based on a modified droop control is presented in this paper. Averaging the DC output voltage and averaging the output current of two neighboring converters are employed to reduce the congestion of the communication network in a control system, and the decentralized control method is implemented. By minimizing the power loss of the cable, the optimal load current sharing proportion is derived in order to achieve rational current sharing among different converters. The validity of the proposed method using a low bandwidth communication (LBC) network for different topologies is verified. The influence of the parameters of the power cable on the control system stability is analyzed in detail. Finally, transient response simulations and experiments are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy for a MT-HVDC system.

  • Heat release analysis is a very importent method in understanding the combustion phenomena inside an engine cylinder. In this study, one-zone heat release analysis was used with the mesured cylinder pressures of an IDI(indirect injection), a HSDI(high speed direct injection) and a SI(spark ignition) engine. It has benefits of simple equation, fast speed, reliability. The object of the study is to compare the combustion characteristics among an IDI, a HSDI and SI engine. Result of analysis, the maximum heat release rate of a HSDI is higher than an IDI because of long ignition delay period. The heat release curve of a IDI is more linear than an HSDI, so the combustion characteristics of a IDI is similiar to that of an SI engine. There is a suggestion here that the combustion efficiency of a HSDI is highest of that of all engines because of the smallest heat transfer loss of all engines.

  • Many applications of sensor network require connection to the Internet. The transmission protocol of traditional sensor network was designed within the sensor network itself. However, based on 6LoWPAN which can be accessed using IPv6, direct connection is possible between the sensor network and the TCP/IP network outside. Transmission of data in applications of sensor network falls into two main categories. One is a small packet that is periodically produced such as packet related to temperature and humidity. The other is a relatively large packet that brings about network overheads such as images. We investigated the conformance test and pros and cons of application data over the transmission protocol of Zigbee and 6LoWPAN. As a result, both Zigbee and 6LoWPAN have shown low rate of loss for periodic data and have in creased reliability of data transfer. When transmitting streaming image data, both ACK, non ACK mode of Zigbee and UDP of 6LoWPAN minimized transmission time but suffered the consequences of high packet loss. Even though TCP of 6LoWPAN required a long transmission time, we were able to confirm that no loss has occurred.

  • This paper focuses on the engineering trade-offs in designing capacitor voltage balancing schemes for modular multilevel converters (MMC) HVDC: regulation performance and switching loss. MMC is driven by the on/off switch operation of numerous submodules and the key design concern is balancing submodule capacitor voltages minimizing switching transition among submodules because it represents the voltage regulation performance and system loss. This paper first introduces the state-of-the-art MMC-HVDC submodule capacitor voltage balancing methods reported in the literatures and discusses the trade-offs in designing these methods for HVDC application. This paper further proposes a submodule capacitor balancing scheme exploiting a control signal to flexibly interchange between the on-state and the off-state submodules. The proposed scheme enables desired performance-based voltage regulation and avoids unnecessary switching transitions among submodules, consequently reducing the switching loss. The flexibility and controllability particularly fit in high-level MMC HVDC applications where the aforementioned design trade-offs become more crucial. Simulation studies for MMC HVDC are performed to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed capacitor voltage balancing algorithm.

  • The widely used power supply (Switched Mode Power Supply : SMPS) as a source in order to stabilize direct current for electronics or communication systems has merits, when it is compared to the existing source for stability, such as high efficiency, small size, light weight by means of switching process of the semiconductor device which controls the flow of power. However, due to existence of inductors and capacitors used for charging energy, the source part in electronic or communication systems hasn't reached the speed, that is supposed to get, for achieving smaller size and lighter weight. In order to got smallness in size, it is necessary to increase switching frequency. And that makes devices for measuring energy smaller. Nevertheless, the rise switching frequency brings increases in switching loss, inductor loss, and power loss. Also, the occurrence of surge and noise caused by high frequency switching is setting higher. The resonant converter has been considered as one of methods that give solutions for the problems of SMPS and that method has been paid attention as a source technology in electronics and communication.

  • In recent years, the LDM(Linear DC Motor) is widely used, because it has more merits than other rotary motors. First, if system requires linear motion, LDM realizes direct linear motion as rotary motor does not. Second, system is simple and easy to control, and so on. In optical disc drive, a tracking system consists of two parts. One is fine actuating and the other is coarse actuating. For coarse actuating VCM(Voice Coil Motor) actuator is used as a basic drive mechanism. In this paper, MC(Moving Coil) type LDM is designed, manufactured and controlled. System is composed of mechanical-electromagnetic component, therefore mechanical loss and electromagnetic loss exist. The dominent mechanical loss is friction which results from sliding between guide shaft and hole. Therefore, this paper shows the friction compensation control. High speed and accurate position is not gained only PID control, therefore other control method is applied to the system.

  • Heavy snow is a natural disaster that causes serious economic damage. Since snowfall has been increasing recently, there is a need for measures against heavy snowfall. In order to make a policy decision on heavy snowfall, it is necessary to estimate the precise amount of damage by heavy snowfall. The direct damage of the heavy snow is severe, however the indirect damage caused by the road congestion and the urban dysfunction is also serious. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate indirect damage of snowfall. The purpose of this study is to estimate the effects on the regional economy from the limitation in traffic logistics caused by heavy snow using the transport demand model and inoperability input-output Model. The result shows that the amount of production loss caused by the heavy snow is KRW 2,460 billion per year and if the period of snowfall removal is shortened by one day or two days, it could be reduced to KRW 1,219 or 2,787 billion in production loss.

  • Several herbs including Artemisia are known to possess conceptive property. In the present study, mouse spermatozoa were incubated with ethanol extract of Artemisia vulgaris leaves. The effect of extract on acrosome exocytosis was studied by labeling spermatozoa with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) peanut agglutinin and by staining with Coomassie blue. Viability and membrane integrity were studied by Trypan-blue staining and hypo-osmotic swelling test. Artemisia extract at very low concentration caused precocious acrosome reaction and loss of sperm viability. Acrosome reaction increased remarkably from 22.63% to 88.42% with increasing extract concentration from 0 to 2,000 ㎍/mL. However, the viability loss of spermatozoa was increased from 11.71% in control to 63.73% in samples treated, evaluated by Trypan-blue staining method. Membrane damage caused by the extract, evaluated by hypo-osmotic swelling test was even low, ranging from 2.27% to only 24.23%. These results indicate that Artemisia extract might block fertilization by causing precocious acrosome exocytosis in spermatozoa. A direct contraceptive effect was tested by injecting the plant extract into the vagina of female mice and then allowing them to mate with normal males. The treated female mice delivered significantly fewer litters in comparison to the control.

  • Stars create and expel new chemical elements and dust at the end of the stellar life cycle. Therefore, understanding the evolved stars, their mass loss process, and the conditions of the returning material to be mixed with the surrounding interstellar medium is an important step toward studies on the new generation of stars as well as the evolution of cosmic elements in galactic scale. I will review the first results from the ALMA Early Science on the evolved stars and direct future works.
