  • Thorea indica sp. nov. is described from the Sai River, Uttar Pradesh, India (26°39′00.7″ N, 80°47′38.3″ E). Its classification is based on molecular sequences of the plastid-encoded RuBisCO large-subunit gene, rbcL and the barcode region of the mitochondrial encoded cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, cox1, and morphological data. The sequence analyses confirm a new species of Thorea. The cox1 barcode sequence had 90.4-90.8% identity with Thorea sp. from Australia and Thorea hispida from Hawaii and China. Based on rbcL sequences the Indian specimen was positioned in a major clade with high support (>95 bootstrap and 0.95 posterior probability) containing two other species: T. okadae from Japan and T. hispida from the continental USA, Hawaii, the UK, and China. The divergences among these sequences were T. indica vs. T. okadae (2.8%) and T. indica vs. T. hispida (2.9-3.4%). The comparison of morphological characters of Thorea from India was not conclusive due to the inadequate descriptions in previous reports: most specimens reported as T. hispida fit within the circumscription of T. indica as described here. The previous report of T. siamensis from the Sai River is incorrect and the specimens fit within our description of T. indica. Thorea indica and T. okadae can be distinguished by minor morphometric characters and sexuality (dioecious vs. monoecious).

  • Scapharca satawi is dioecious and attains sexual maturity, when it grows to a shell length of 70 mm. Its ovary is composed of a number of ovarian sacs; likewise, its testis is also composed of several testicular tubules. During the year 1999-2000, the condition index reached the maximum (0.017) in June and spawning occurred from July to September, when water temperature remained above 23$^{\circ}C$. The reproductive cycle of S. satowi can be classified into five successive stages: early active (December to March), late active (April to May), ripe (June 7o July), partially spawned (July to September) and spent/inactive (September and November) stages. Monthly changes in the condition index were closely relaxed to its reproductive cycle.

  • The reproductive ecology of the purple shell, Rapana venosa was investigated by the histological observations on depositions of the egg capsules, and hatching of larvae in the laboratory and the subtidal zone of the vicinity of piung-do, Chollabud-do, west coast of korea, for one year from June 1992 to May 1993. The results are summarized as follows:1. Rapana venosa is dioecious in sex. The ovary is composed of a number of ovarian lobules, and the testis comprises a number of ovarian lobules, and the testis comprises of gonads could be classified into 4 stages in males and 5 stages in females: 1) growing stage(in female subdivided into 2 stages of early and late growing stage). 2)mature stage. 3)spent stage or copulationstage. 4)rdcovering stage. The early growing stage in females of the purple shell was in September through February, late gorwing stage was in October to March, mature stage was in September to January, mature stage was in September to July, copulation stage was in Februaty to June and recovering stage in April to October.3. Spawning occurred 3-4 times at intervals of 1-3 days, and completed within 10 days from the beginning of spawning during the spawning season of the year.4. From the results of laboratory and field observations, egg masses are composed of a number of egg capsules, egg masses are occurred from May to late August, and in mid August depositions of egg mass in composed of 90-113 egg capsules, fecundity in an egg capsule was ranged 984 to 1,241 eggs(average 1,096 egg). Therefore, fecundity in total egg capsules spawned per individual during the spawning season is estimated as approximately 320,000 to 450,000 egges.5. The incubation period during deposition of an egg capsule to hatching larvad tood 17 days at 18.3-20.4%C(water temperature)and 1.021 (specific gravity fo sea water).

  • Harn, Chang Yawl (Chonpuk U., Iri, Korea)-Studies on the interspecific crossing of FORSYTHIA genus. Kor. Jour. Bot. 4(1)1~8 1961: Interspecific crossing of two species, F. saxatilis and F. Koreana, was carried out in order to make clear the segregation ratio of style length, mode of fertility, the fertility of F1 generation, dioecism, and other taxonomic question, the result of which being summarized as follows: 1) Style length is segregated into 1:1 ratio. 2) The behaviro of fertility in the legitimate and illegitimate unions between the different species is exactly like that in the two dimorphic forms of the same species. 3) The mode of fertility between the long and short style of the F1 generation also follows that of the heterostyle plants. 4) No difficulties or irregularities are observed in the interspecific crossing and the F1's fertility. 5) In F1 generation exceedingly high morphological and physiological variations are observed. 6) The short style individual is well fertilized and sets seed when legitimately combined. The insistence that the short style is male, this genus being dioecious, is groundless. 7) Among F1 individuals, are observed a few dwarf-types with tiny and weak vegetative and reproductive organs. 8) The two species used behave in many ways like the different styles of the same species.

  • In order to obtain basic information for pure line breeding of hemp which is effective on the pure line preservation and propagation, three varieties were investigative from 1995 to 1996 at Mokpo Experiment Station, Honam Agriculture Experiment Station, and cutting parts, cutting times, cutting length and storage duration after cutting of plant were observed. Higher rooting ratio were observed in cutting of shoot and later branch, in July 5, optimum harvesting time and 5 days after harvesting time, in shorter storage duration,0 and 2 days. Also there were the highest rooting ratio increased by from 12% to 16% in shorter cutting of 10cm than 15cm long cutting in shoot, lateral branch and stem cuttings. Hemp cv. Korea showed higher rooting ratio than the other varieties, Japan and Turkey. Therefore, it was concluded that hemp, a dioecious plant, could be effectively propagated for the pure lines by cutting method, especially in cv. Korea.

  • We conducted principal component analyses using the thirty two quantitative characteristics of Najas from South Korea to examine the morphological variation and diagnostic characteristics. As a result of our investigation and the morphometric analyses, each taxon could be identified using the leaf width, shape of the leaf sheath, number of teeth on the leaf margin, number of anther cells, number of areoles in each longitudinal row of seeds, and the ratio of the areole width to the length. Dioecious Najas marina was clearly distinguished from the other monoecious taxa (N. graminea, N. gracillima, N. minor, N. oguraensis, and N. orientalis) by the larger size of the stem, the leaf, the flower and the fruit. The monoecious taxa could be identified using vegetative characteristics except for N. minor and N. oguraensis, which were distinct from each other according to the locule number in the staminate flower.

  • The present work was carried out to investigate the maturing period and the morphology of utricle Codium fragile collected from April 1984 to March 1985 in the coast of Chumgmu southern of Korea. Ranges of water temperature and salinity during the survey period were $7.5\~27.0^{\circ}C$ and $32.9\~34.5\%_{\circ}$, respectively. The gametangia were produced throughout the year. Mature gametangia were present on plants collected from June to November, whereas most of plants collected from January to May occured as the elongated utricles with both mature and immature gametangia. As for the sexuality, most of plants were dioecious and some monoecious, and there were more male gametophytes rather than female gametophytes. Some plants collected during winter months of December to February were observed as thalli with both brunted and elongated utricles, and male and female gametangia occured together on a single utricle.

  • Gametogenesis, mating behaviour and spawning of Octopus ocellatus were investigated by histological study. This species is dioecious, and showed a protandry phenomenon. Ooogenesis (in females) and spermatogenesis (in males) can be classified into 3 stages, respectively. O. ocellatus copulates in one of two ways: a male may leap upon a female, mounting her mantle, or a male may sit near the female and extend the hectocotylized third right arm toward her. Spawning occurred between April and June in females, and between March and May in males of O. ocellatus. The spawning period was once a year and the peak took place between May and June. A number of flatened follicle cells, which were attached to an oocyte, were involved in vitellogenesis in the cytoplasm of the vitellogenic oocyte (maturing oocyte), and formation of chorion membrane (secondary egg membrane) of the ovarian eggs. Fecundity per female closely related to GSI was 294-660 eggs (average, 429 eggs). The diameters of the ovarian eggs surrounded by chorion membrane were approximately in the range of 10.10-2.50 mm. Each ovarian egg laid by a female was connected to an egg string. Each egg string was 1-5.5 cm (average 3.6 cm). The total number of eggs laid by a female of this species ranged 218-314, the egg sizes were independent to the size of female adult. this species has a life mode showing some special reproductive characteristics of an annual semelparity as shown in Octopodidae species because we have never seen a female spawning a second time.
