Visible light communications (VLC) using the intensity modulation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) provides a new communication medium to overcome the shortage of radio spectrum, and allows reuse of LED lighting infrastructures. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) was introduced to VLC for its merits in mitigating the fading effects resulting from delay spread, and in avoiding low-frequency ambient interference. Noise and clipping are two major factors that degrade the performance of OFDM in VLC. A larger signal easily overcomes noise, but experiences impairment by clipping. Therefore, degradation due to clipping has a trade-off relationship with that due to noise, depending on the signal amplitude of OFDM. In this paper, the optimal signal amplitude in the trade-off is obtained by simulation when the dimming and LED intensity are given. The former indicates a user's requirement for lighting, and the latter represents the channel quality. The required LED intensity-to-noise ratio, as the channel quality that guarantees dimming as well as an adequate bit-error rate (BER), is also discussed.
In this paper, a light-emitting diode (LED) backlight driver integrated circuit (IC) for medium-sized liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is proposed. In the proposed IC, a linear current regulator with matched internal resistors and an adaptive phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming controller are also proposed to improve LED current uniformity and reliability. The double feedback loop control boost converter is used to achieve high power efficiency, fast transient characteristic, and high dimming frequency and resolution. The proposed IC was fabricated using the 0.35 ${\mu}m$ bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process. The LED current uniformity and LED fault immunity of the proposed IC were verified through experiments. The measured power efficiency was 90%; the measured LED current uniformity, 97%; and the measured rising and falling times of the LED current, 86 and 7 ns, respectively. Due to the fast rising and falling characteristics, the proposed IC operates up to 39 kHz PWM dimming frequency, with an 8-bit dimming resolution. It was verified that the phase difference between the PWM dimming signals is changed adaptively when LED fault occurs. The experiment results showed that the proposed IC meets the requirements for the LED backlight driver IC for medium-sized LCDs.
CCFL(cold cathode fluorescent lamp) are used to backlight of LCD(liquid crystal display). CCFL dimming methods are used to pulse frequency modulation(PFM) or pulse width modulation(PWM). In this paper, design of CCFL driving and control circuit by half-bridge type series and parallel resonant inverter that variable frequency modulation method to control the output voltage current. Inverter switching frequency is higher than resonant frequency for stable operating, and it is possible dimming control. On the basis of equivalent circuit, the validity of this study is confirmed by the comparison of simulation and experimental result.
This paper presents the design of acoustic resonance(AR) free and dimmable electronic ballast for 1kW Metal-Halide Lamp(MHL). The proposed Ballast consists of a Full-Bridge(FB) rectifier, a passive power factor correction(PFC) circuit, a full-bridge inverter, an ignitor using LC resonance and a control circuit for frequency modulation and dimming control. Whereas a passive PFC provides advantages in terms of high reliability and low cost for constructing the circuit, it is difficult to supply a stable voltage because of the output voltage ripple that occurs with a period of 120Hz. Although the ballast can be designed with a small size and a light weight if it is driven at a switching frequency between 1 and 100 kHz, AR will occur if the eigenvalue frequency of the lamp coincides with the inverter's operation frequency. The operation frequency was modulated in real time according to the output voltage ripple to compensate for the variation in power supplied to the lamp and eliminate AR. For dimming, the method, which modulated drive frequency of FB inverter using the control of DC level by microprocessor, was used. The Dimming ranged at least from 600W to 1kw as rated power of the lamp with 4 stages. Performance of the proposed technique was validated through numerical analysis, computer simulation using Pspice and by applying it to an electronic ballast for a prototype 1kW MHL.
This paper presents soft switching zero voltage switching high frequency inverter for rare gas fluorescent lamp using dielectric-barrier discharge phenomenon. The simple high-frequency inverter can completely achieve stable zero voltage soft switching (ZVS) commutation for wide its output power regulation ranges and load variations under its constant high frequency pulse density modulation (PDM) scheme. Its transient and steady state operating principle is originally described and discussed for a constant high-frequency PDM control strategy under a stable ZVS operation commutation, together with its output effective power regulation characteristics-based on the high frequency PDM strategy. The experimental operating performances of this high frequency Inverter are illustrated as compared with computer simulation results and experimental ones. Its light dimming characteristics due to power regulation scheme are evaluated and discussed on the basis of simulation and experimental results. The feasible effectiveness of this high frequency inverter appliance implemented here is proven from the practical point of view.

This paper provides a solution for the problem of efficiency decrease caused by load variation. A novel control scheme of tracking the PT's operation frequency for the maximum efficiency is proposed. As a result, a high efficiency over $80\%$ has been achieved even under the output-current decrease down to $10\%$ of the full load current.

In the LED lighting industry, the dimming function in the LED lamp is required by demands of many consumers. To drive this LED lighting, various types of power converters have been applied. Among them, an LLC resonant converter could be applied for high power LED lighting because of its high efficiency and high power density, etc. The function of power factor correction (PFC) might be added to it. In this paper, a dimmable single-stage asymmetrical LLC resonant converter is proposed. The proposed converter performs both input-current harmonics reduction and PFC using the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Also, the lower voltage stress across switching devices as well as the zero voltage switching (ZVS) in switching devices is realized by the proposed topology. It can reduce cost and has high efficiency of the driver. In addition, the regulation of the output power by variable switching frequency can vary the brightness of a light. In the proposed converter, one of the attractive advantages doesn’t need any extra control circuits for the dimming function. To verify the performance of the proposed converter, simulation and experimental results from a 300W prototype are provided.
As the electrodes are not needed, the electrodeless lamps using the induction discharge have a long lifetime and are robust against the variable output condition of a ballast. This paper proposed a dimmable resonant inverter for the electrodeless lamps. The proposed resonant inverter formed a half bridge inverter adopted FWM to control the average output power of the inverter and the illumination of a lamp. In this paper, the proposed dimming algorithm was described and the prototype experimental setup for 100W electrodeless lamps was carried out to verify the validity of the proposed dimming method.
