  • ATM network design procedure is different from the current circuit or packet networks design procedure because of the variety of the offered services and the variability of requested bandwidth for each connection of ATM network. A number of optimization models for the link dimensioning of ATM network design have been proposed in the literature. However, most of the literature did not consider the modularity of resources allocated to a transmission path and the non-bifurcation of a VP link over the more than one TP, which are standardized in recent ITU-T Recommendations. In thIs paper, we propose a mathematical model for link dimensioning of ATM networks, based on the network synthesis method and a generalized bin-packing problem. The suggested model satisfies the constraints mentioned in the ITU-T Recommendations. We also propose efficient and practical algorithms for the suggested model. Computational experiment shows that the suggested algorithm gives efficient solutions even for moderate and large-sized networks within reasonable time.

  • This article discusses a capacity planning method in QoS-guaranteed IP networks such as BcN (Broadband convergence Network). Since IP based networks have been developed to transport best-effort data traffic, the introduction of multi-service component in BcN requires fundamental modifications in capacity planning and network dimensioning. In this article, we present the key issues of the capacity planning in multi-service IP networks. To provide a foundation for network dimensioning procedure, we describe a systematic approach for classification and modeling of BcN traffic based on the QoS requirements of BcN services. We propose a capacity planning framework considering data traffic and real-time streaming traffic separately. The multi-service Erlang model, an extension of the conventional Erlang B loss model, is introduced to determine required link capacity for the call based real-time streaming traffic. The application of multi-service Erlang model can provide significant improvement in network planning due to sharing of network bandwidth among the different services.

  • In this work we investigate the power of power law in the VoD service over IP network. Especially, we show that the power of power law is strong in the location of the contents storage for the VoD service and its impact on the link dimensioning. This work first shows the instance of the power law in the popularity of the video contents from the real data for the IPTV service. After that we propose an analytic model that characterizes the behavior of customers in accessing the video servers as well as the power law in the viewing pattern. Finally, we show the impact of the power law by proposing a model for the cost as well as link dimensioning. Via numerical experiment we show the implication of the proposition.

  • This work proposes an analytic framework to estimate the capacity of the link in an M2M gateway that multiplexes a massive number of machine type communication devices. First, we specify the network architecture for M2M communications. Next, we summarize the characteristics of M2M traffic, from which we extract an area about the problem that has to be resolved in the dimensioning of the link capacity. After that we propose a new method to determine the capacity of the link in an M2M gateway. Via numerical experiment reflecting the realistic environment of M2M traffic, we illustrate the validity of the proposed model.

  • In this paper we present a theoretical framework for the network design with delay QoS guarantee to a voice at the packet level. Especially, we propose a method for estimating the bandwidth at the ingress edge routers accommodating the voice connections and data sessions in the next-generation If network. First, we describe network architecture for VoIP (Voice over IP) services in the NGN (Next Generation Network). After that, we propose a procedure for dimensioning the bandwidth at the output port of a router that accommodates voice and data traffic using the non-preemptive queuing system with strict priority service scheme. Via numerical experiments we illustrate the implication of the proposition.

  • Geosynthetics have been studied especially Korean Railway earth works from the outset and have proved successful in both technical and economic terms. Hitherto Geosynthetics have been given consideration chiefly in dimensioning the requisite track subbase thickness, but have not been considered when calculating the thickness of the frost protection layer. this often made it impossible to reduce the thickness of the subbase. The article therefore puts forward a proposal for considering the German Geosynthetics in dimensioning the requisite thickness of the frost protection layer.

  • When various types of traffic streams are offered to a common trunk group, we develop an optimal dimensioning procedure using the alternate routing principle and verify our model by a simulation model. Our method reduces the total network cost by about 10%, compared with the full-mesh system.

  • All-IP network requires change of the existing IP network engineering methods as the convergence service market between communication and broadcasting industries using IP network is growing rapidly. Especially the video services like IPTV require more strict transmission quality and higher bandwidth than the existing data services. So it is difficult to design All-IP network by the over-provisioning method which used to be used for the existing IP network design. It also requires a heavy investment which becomes one of big obstacles to the IPTV service expansion. In order to reduce the investment costs, it is required to design an optimized network by maximizing the utilization of the network resources and at the same time maintaining the customer satisfaction in terms of service quality. In this paper, we first analyze the effects of IPTV traffic on the existing internet. Then we compare two traffic engineering technologies, which are dimensioning without admission control and dimensioning with admission control, on the All-IP network design by simulation. Finally, we suggest cost effectiveness of traffic engineering technologies for designing the All-IP network.

  • The foundations are classified into shallow and deep, which have important differences: in terms of geometry, the behavior of the soil, its structural functionality, and its constructive systems. The shallow foundations may be of various types according to their function; isolated footings, combined footings, strip footings, and slabs foundation. The isolated footings are of the type rectangular, square and circular. The combined footing may be rectangular, trapezoidal or T-shaped in plan. This paper presents a new model for T-shaped combined footings to obtain the most economical contact surface on the soil (optimal dimensioning) to support an axial load and moment in two directions to each column. The new model considers the soil real pressure, i.e., the pressure varies linearly. The classical model uses the technique of test and error, i.e., a dimension is proposed, and subsequently, the equation of the biaxial bending is used to obtain the stresses acting on each vertex of the T-shaped combined footing, which must meet the conditions following: The minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, and maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity that can withstand the soil. To illustrate the validity of the new model, numerical examples are presented to obtain the minimum area of the contact surface on the soil for T-shaped combined footings subjected to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column.

  • This paper presents a new model for the strap combined footings to obtain the most economical contact surface on the soil (optimal dimensioning) to support an axial load and moment in two directions to each column. The new model considers the soil real pressure, i.e., the pressure varies linearly. Research presented in this paper shows that can be applied to the T-shaped combined footings and the rectangular combined footings. The classical model uses the technique of test and error, i.e., a dimension is proposed, and subsequently, the equation of the biaxial bending is used to obtain the stresses acting on each vertex of the strap combined footing, which must meet the conditions following: The minimum stress should be equal or greater than zero, and maximum stress must be equal or less than the allowable capacity that can withstand the soil. Numerical examples are presented to obtain the optimal area of the contact surface on the soil for the strap combined footings subjected to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column. Appendix shows the Tables 4 and 5 for the strap combined footings, the Table 6 for the T-shaped combined footings, and the Table 7 for the rectangular combined footings.
