  • A new computer simulation method for film growth, the kinetic Monte Carlo simulation in combination with the results obtained from molecular dynamics simulation for the transient process induced by deposited atoms, was developed. The behavior of energetic atom in Au/Au(100) thin film deposition was investigated by the method. The atomistic mechanism of energetic atom deposition that led to the smoothness enhancement and the relationship between the role of transient process and film growth mechanism were discussed. We found that energetic atoms cannot affect the film growth mode in layer-by-layer at high temperature. However, at temperature of film growth in 3-dimensional mode and in quasi-two-dimensional mode, energetic atoms can enhance the smoothness of film surface. The enhancement of smoothness is caused by the transient mobility of energetic atoms and the suppression for the formation of 3-dimensional islands.

  • To increase the performance of the light diffusion films, we controlled the three dimensional microstructure of the organic fillers(beads). The refractive index, the size distribution and the three dimensional distribution of beads play an important role to determine the performance of light diffusion films for the backlight unit of TFT-LCD.

  • Two dimensional phase transition and three dimensional propagation of layer structures of liquid crystal film are investigated by using surface second harmonic generation method. We have found a distinctive first order phase transition between a monolayer phase and a stable 3-layer phase of 8CB liquid crystal film.

  • We investigated the formation of 2-dimension hologram grating by means of selective etching characteristic and photo-expansion effect according to photo irradiation on amorphous As-Ge-Se-S thin film. By method of phase holography, we made the 2-dimensional hologram grating by each (S:P) and ($+45^{\circ}:-45^{\circ}$) polarized beam with DPSS laser(532nm) and He-Ne laser(632nm). A recording property was observed at each polarized beam through 2-dimensional hologram surface relief grating. Chalcogenide thin film was etched selectively by NaOH solution after the formation of 1-dimensional diffraction grating. And then etched sample was rotated 90 degree to fabricate 2 dimensional hologram grating. We found that it was observed the formation of 2-dimensional hologram grating by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy).

  • Effects of thermal contact resistance between heater and susceptor, susceptor and graphite board in a MOCVD reactor on temperature distribution and film growth rate were analyzed. One-dimensional thermal resistance model considering thermal contact resistance and heat transfer area was made up at first to find the temperature drop at the surface of graphite board. This one-dimensional model predicted the temperature drop of 18K at the board surface. Temperature distribution of a reactor wall from the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analysis including the gap at the wafer position showed the temperature drop of 20K. Film growth rates of InP and GaAs were predicted using computational fluid dynamics technique with chemical reaction model. Temperature distribution from the three-dimensional heat transfer calculation was used as a thermal boundary condition to the film growth rate simulations. Temperature drop due to the thermal contact resistance affected to the GaAs film growth a little but not to the InP film growth.

  • Effect of solution film processing conditions on the dimensional stability of TAC film which is used as protection film of liquid crystal display (LCD) has been studied under hot and humid environmental condition (65 $^{\circ}C$, 90%). In addition, the mechanical and optical property changes due to the dimensional instability were also investigated. It was found that the fast solvent evaporation due to the increasing of methylene chloride content in solvent mixtures and decreasing dope concentration caused the lowering of dimensional stability under hot and humid condition. This dimensional stability change also affected the mechanical and optical properties of TAC films as well.

  • The film thickness and shape of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is measured by optical interferometer, which is the most precise method for EHL film measurement. However, the interpretation of the image pattern from optical viscometer is not simple for two-dimensional shape. A newly developed method of image processing makes it possible to evaluate the film thickness and shape in every point of contact region with two dimensional aspects. In this study, we captured the film shape of EHL film by the monochromatic incident light and analyzed the film thickness with the image processing method, which uses phase shift method. From the values of intensity in fringes, the qualitative feature of film thickness in the contact area are obtained by using Zernike polynomial

  • A speaker is a system which produces sound through electromechanical operations. It transforms electronic signals into audible sound signals. Almost all speakers are three dimensional. These days, many mobile electronic devices such as mobile electronic devices have become smaller and thinner. A problem with this miniaturization, however, is that the volume of speakers has also decreased. In contrast to conventional three dimensional speakers, we have invented a new type of two dimensional flexible speaker by utilizing the reverse piezoelectric effect.

  • Oil-film flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements using a five-hole probe have been conducted to investigate three-dimensional flow characteristics and total pressure losses of a row of film-cooling jets injected in spanwise direction. For several span-to-diameter ratios, experiments are performed in the case of three velocity ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5. The flow measurements show that downstream flow due to the injection is characterized by a single streamwise vortex instead of a pair of counter-rotating vortices, which appear in the case of streamwise injection, and the vortex strength strongly depends on the velocity ratio. Regardless of the velocity*y ratio, presence of the spanwise film-cooling jets always produces total pressure loss, which is pronounced when the velocity ratio is large. It has also been found that the production of the total pressure loss is closely related to the secondary vortical flow. In addition, effects of the span-to-diameter ratio on the flow and total pressure loss are discussed in detail.

  • Eight types of thin composite panels were manufactured by press-lam and mat-forming process applied to optimum manufacturing condition, studied in former first research by author (1995). They were tested and compared with control boards on dimensional stability, internal bond strength, tensile strength, Screw withdrawal strength, and bending properties. These thin composite panels manufactured by mat-forming process were generally superior to those by press-lam in dimensional stability and mechanical properties. In the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of thin composite panels manufactured by mat-forming process, the thin composite panels (A and E type) composed of particle or sawdust core and veneer face with polyethylene film, were as good as those of common plywood (control board). Internal bond strength showed highest value in the thin composite panel(D type) which composed of particle core and polypropylene screen face with polyethylene film. The thin composite panels(G and H type) composed of sawdust or particle core and polypropylene screen face with polyethylene film by press-lam and mat-forming process, showed most highest value in dimensional stability and water absorption.
