Analysis on the book cover design using Roland Barthes' Semiotics (롤랑바르트의 기호학을 이용한 추상적 책표지 디자인에 관한 분석)

  • By analyzing abstract book cover design, this study aims to examine the applicability of the semiotic methodology of Roland Barthes and to conduct a preference survey of how people would accept it. The selected books for the study are and published in Openbooks publishing company to mark the 30th anniversary of the opening. The research results are as follows. First, it was confirmed that Roland Barthes' semiotic approach is a suitable tool for identifying the symbolic phenomena of visual elements that constitute abstract book cover design. Second, people were well informed of what the abstract form of design conveys, but they showed personal differences in preference, making it difficult to achieve clear results. This study, together with the importance of the internal meaning that appears in the book cover design, gives graphic designers an indication that interaction between the communicator and the acceptor should be sought.

  • This paper presents an attempt to develop a visual programming language-based 3D virtual reality authoring tool intended to compose virtual interior space. The rapid development of digital technology and the wide spread of the Intenet have expanded the different uses of virtual reality in a number of applications ranging from interior design to building maintenance. In particular, the construction of cyber spaces based on existing interior spaces is becoming increasingly important. Current research, however, remains at the level of converting 3D models into virtual reality models, despite practitioners' needs for structural space models. Moreover, commercial tools to build virtual reality space have the disadvantage of targeting people who have professional knowledge of computer programs and computer graphics. Accordingly, the 3D virtual reality authoring tool developed in this research - called the VESL system - enables virtual and structural space to be easily composed using intuitive and interactive visual interfaces, which are based on visual programming techniques. The VESL system also provides an XML based semantic description of interior space, to be used to describe interior space information. We anticipate that the virtual reality spaces composed by this system will be of considerable use in the fields of architecture and interior design. Further research issues identified at the end of the research include developing a converter/filter for transforming Internet virtual reality standard language, or VRML, and evaluating the application of the system for practical use.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design of self-tuning adaptive control system that is robust to the changing dynamic configuration as well as to the load variation factors using digital signal processors for robot manipulators. TMS3200C50 is used in implementing real-time adaptive control algorithms provide advanced performance for robot manipulator. In this paper an adaptive control scheme is proposed in order to design the pole-placement self-tuning controller which can reject the offset due to any load disturbance without a detailed description of robot dynamics. parameters of discrete-time difference model are estimated by the recursive least-square identification algorithm and controller parameters are detemined by the pole-placement method. Performance of self-tuning adaptive controller is illusrated by the simulation and experiment for a SCARA robot.

  • This study is investigates space syntax theory, developed by Bill Hiller, used for physical analysis and visual access of space and role of spatial configuration based on social logic. it mean computer program analyze physical structure of space and represent by mathematical logic. it used for predict space use and Descriptive of spatial configuration. This method and theory is incompletion for design, but it enough useful tool for architecture and urban design and will be improved. And development of a simple computer program - SSA(Sspace Syntax Analysis) for space syntax analysis and study. SSA is based on convex map analysis and using VISIO software for easily using and development.

Design of a real Time Adaptive Controller for Industrial Robot Using Digital Signal Processor (디지털 신호처리기를 사용한 산업용 로봇의 실시간 적응제어기 설계)

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design of adaptive control system using DSPs(TMS320C30) for robotic manipulators to achieve trajectory tracking by the joint angles. Digital signal processors are used in implementing real time adaptive control algorithms to provide an enhanced motion control for robotic manipulators. In the proposed control scheme, adaptation laws are derived from the improved Lyapunov second stability analysis method based on the adaptive model reference control theory. The adaptive controller consists of an adaptive feedforward controller, feedback controller, and PID type time-varying auxillary control elements. The proposed adaptive control scheme is simple in structure, fast in computation, and suitable for implementation of real-time control. Moreover, this scheme does not require an accurate dynamic modeling, nor values of manipulator parameters and payload. Performance of the adaptive controller is illustrated by simulation and experimental results for a SCARA robot.

Polyurethane Foam Template for Simple Design of Digital Island Flap (폴리우레탄 폼 드레싱재료를 이용한 간단한 손가락 섬피판 디자인)

  • Purpose: Various techniques have been attempted for design of the flaps. However, there are some disadvantages. They have thin, pliable, and two dimensional methods. The aim of this study is to report usefulness of polyurethane foam dressing materials for three dimensional design of the digital island flap. Methods: From June of 2007 to september of 2008, 10 patients received digital island flap surgery for soft tissue defect of the finger. After minimal debridement of the wound, size and shape of the defect were measured using polyurethane foam. We used Medifoam-$5^{(R)}$ And then, designed this inset the wound. The flap was designed on the donor site with a arterial pedicle as the central axis according to size and shape. A full thickness skin graft from the groin is applied on the flap donor defect and secured with a tieover bolster dressing. Results: Reviewing sizes of the flaps, the length and width of flaps ranged from 1.5 to 3.3 cm and 1.0 to 2.5 cm. The PACS(Picture Archiving Communication System) program allows identification of the donor depth of finger. The distance for the soft tissue ranged from 4.3 mm to 6.7 mm. Mean depth of donor site was 5.3${\pm}$0.6 mm. Also, the thickness of Medifoam-$5^{(R)}$ ranged nearly 5 mm. On flap insetting, full-thickness skin graft was necessary. We did not experience any problems in the recipient site size either, regardless of the extended flaps. Conclusion: Polyurethane foam has many advantages over the more conventional templates. Refinements in flap design and surgical technique resulted in favorable functional and cosmetic results. Especially, for beginner, Polyurethane foam dressing material is a simple and safe tool and therefore is an excellent choice for design of the island flap.

A Study on Web Accessibility Status of Metropolitan and Provincial Offices of Education from the Universal Design View (유니버설 디자인 관점에서 본 국내 시도 교육청의 웹 접근성 실태에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the enforcement of a law about disability nondiscrimination and rights protection in 2008, the web accessibility has become an obligation. According to a survey targeting public sectors such as central administrative organization, local autonomous entity and etc., the level of compliance with web accessibility appeared to be improved every year. However, such legal mechanism focuses on the improvement of convenience for disabled people only and does not meet the concept of universal design that aims to satisfy every user. Therefore, this study verifies the status of web accessibility on 17 homepages of metropolitan and provincial offices of education. The status survey was carried out with 3 steps: 1) Verification through automated verification tool by National Information Society Agency, 2) Verification through Web Content Accessibility Guidelines(UD-WCAG) that adopts the concept of universal design, 3) Verification by using screen reader. Compared to the verification through automated verification tool, the overall compliance rate verified through UD-WCAG was reported lower.

  • This paper presents a new scheme of neural network controller to improve to improve the robustuous of robot manipulator using digital signal processors. Digital processors, DSPs, are micro-processors that are particularly developed for fast numerical computations involving sums and products of variables. Digital version of most advanced control algorithms can be defined as sums and producrs of measured variables, thus it can be programmed and executed through DSPs. In addition, DSPs are as fist in computation as most 32-bit micro-processors and yet at a fraction of their prices. These features make DSPs a viable computational tool in digital implementation of sophisticated controllers. During past decade it was proposed the well-established theorys for the adaptive control of linear systems, but there exits relativly little gensral theoral for the adaptive control of nonlinear systems. Perforating of the proposed controller is illustrated. This paper describes a new approach to the design of adaptive controller and implementation of real-time control for assembling robotic manipulator using digital signal processor.   • To assess the risk of nuclear power plant operation and to determine the risk impact of digital systems, there is a need to quantitatively assess the reliability of the digital systems in a justifiable manner. The Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA) is a tool which can reveal shortcomings of the NPP design in general and PRA analysts have not had sufficient guiding principles in modelling particular digital components malfunctions. Currently digital I&C systems are mostly analyzed simply and conventionally in PRA, based on failure mode and effects analysis and fault tree modelling. More dynamic approaches are still in the trial stage and can be difficult to apply in full scale PRA-models. As basic events CPU failures, application software failures and common cause failures (CCF) between identical components are modelled.The primary goal is to model dependencies. However, it is not clear which failure modes or system parts CCF:s should be postulated for. A clear distinction can be made between the treatment of protection and control systems. There is a general consensus that protection systems shall be included in PRA, while control systems can be treated in a limited manner. OECD/NEA CSNI Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRisk) has set up a task group, called DIGREL, to develop taxonomy of failure modes of digital components for the purposes of PRA. The taxonomy is aimed to be the basis of future modelling and quantification efforts. It will also help to define a structure for data collection and to review PRA studies.

  • Hanok is a cultural heritage containing our ancestor's life style intact and breathing alive with us until now. As Hanok has been concerned as a echo-friendly architecture, a new methodology for efficient construction without damaging the traditional construction process comes into request. The goal of this research is development of a architectural design tool based on the BIM(Building Information Modeling) for satisfying these demands. It will be usable to support whole process of the traditional building from digital design to production and construction. Firstly, we take a consideration of the traditional architecture reflecting the spirit of the age and suggest efficient design method for architectural components. Each components is pre-fabricated as a template representing similar components. All pre-fabricated components are designed by object-oriented concepts so, many variations for a component can be derived from the pre-fabricated component. Our method is helpful for reducing design errors because that it considers combining rule between connecting components in the template design. Moreover it is plugged in the commercial architectural CAD, so it can supports digital design not only traditional architecture but also fusion style mixed with modern architecture.
