  • In this study a method is proposed for measuring both the refractive index and the shape of a transparent object. The proposed method combines a digital holographic microscope with a liquid. The holograms of a sample immersed in different liquids are recorded and then the three-dimensional phase information of the sample is reconstructed numerically. In particular, we have proposed a theoretical model for determining both the refractive index and shape of a sample, and micro-corner cubes are examined experimentally.

  • Inertial migration phenomena of phytoplankton in pipe flows were investigated using a digital holography technique. As the Reynolds number increases, the microorganisms suspended in a pipe flow are focused at a certain radial position which is called equilibrium position or pinch point. In this study, the effects of the size of microorganism and Reynolds number in the range of 1 < Re < 78 on the inertial migration were investigated and the results are compared with those for solid particles under similar experimental conditions. As a result, the equilibrium position for the elastic microorganisms is not so distinct, compared to the solid particles. This results from deformation of elastic body shape caused by shear-gradient of surrounding flow.

  • In this paper, we propose an auto-focusing algorithm which extracts a depth parameter by analyzing a selected part of a hologram, and we use experimental results to show that the algorithm is practical. First, we record a complex hologram using Optical Scanning Holography. Next we select some part of hologram and extract depth information through Gaussian low pass filtering, synthesizing a real-only hologram, power fringe-adjusted filtering and inverting to a new frequency axis. Finally, we reconstruct the hologram automatically using the extracted depth location.

  • Optical phantoms are essential in optical imaging and measurement instruments for performance evaluation, calibration, and quality control. They enable precise measurement of image resolution, accuracy, sensitivity, and contrast, which are crucial for both research and clinical diagnostics. This paper reviews the recent advancements and challenges in phantoms for optical coherence tomography, photoacoustic imaging, digital holographic microscopy, optical diffraction tomography, and oximetry tools. We explore the fundamental principles of each technology, the key factors in phantom development, and the evaluation criteria. Additionally, we discuss the application of phantoms used for enhancing optical-image quality. This investigation includes the development of realistic biological and clinical tissue-mimicking phantoms, emphasizing their role in improving the accuracy and reliability of optical imaging and measurement instruments in biomedical and clinical research.

  • The semiconductor industry is one of the key industries of Korea, which has continued growing at a steady annual growth rate. Important technology for the semiconductor industry is high integration of devices. This is to increase the memory capacity for unit area, of which key is photolithography. The photolithography refers to a technique for printing the shadow of light lit on the mask surface on to wafer, which is the most important process in a semiconductor manufacturing process. In this study, the width and step-height of wafers patterned through this process were measured to ensure uniformity. The widths and inter-plate heights of the specimens patterned using photolithography were measured using transmissive digital holography. A transmissive digital holographic interferometer was configured, and nine arbitrary points were set on the specimens as measured points. The measurement of each point was compared with the measurements performed using a commercial device called scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Alpha Step. Transmission digital holography requires a short measurement time, which is an advantage compared to other techniques. Furthermore, it uses magnification lenses, allowing the flexibility of changing between high and low magnifications. The test results confirmed that transmissive digital holography is a useful technique for measuring patterns printed using photolithography.

  • The fringe pattern obtained through a DHM (Digital Holographic Microscopy) contains the thickness information of the sample. However, there is a disadvantage that the data capacity is large. Therefore, a compression method that can reduce the data size while minimizing damage to the thickness information of the sample contained in the fringe pattern is required. This paper presents the phase compression method and confirmed through experiments that the phase compression method is more efficient that the fringe pattern compression method used in JPEG Pleno Holography. As a result of evaluation using RMSE, BD-Rate and PSNR the phase compression method showed up to 92.39% improvement in performance than the fringe pattern compression method. In addition, experiment were conducted under various conditions to compare and analyze the compression performance for each condition. In the case of the fringe pattern compression method, it includes not only the phase information for calculating the thickness of the sample but also other information, whereas the phase compression method compresses only the phase information after removing unnecessary information from the fringe pattern. It is judged to have high performance.
