Digestive Tolerance and Safety of an Anti-Regurgitation Formula Containing Locust Bean Gum, Prebiotics and Postbiotics: A Real-World Study

  • Purpose: Infant regurgitation is associated with other functional gastrointestinal disorders and signs and symptoms that have a major impact on the quality of life of infants and their families. This study evaluated the safety, tolerance, and real-world effectiveness of an anti-regurgitation formula containing locust bean gum (LBG), prebiotics, and postbiotics to alleviate digestive symptoms beyond regurgitation. Methods: This 3-month study involved infants with regurgitation requiring the prescription of an anti-regurgitation formula according to usual clinical practice. Outcomes included evaluation of the evolution of stool consistency and frequency; occurrence of colic, constipation, and diarrhea; and assessment of regurgitation severity. Infant crying, parental assessment of infant well-being, and parental satisfaction with the stool consistency were also evaluated. Results: In total, 190 infants (average age: 1.9±1.1 months) were included. After three months, stool frequency and consistency remained within the normal physiological range, with 82.7% of infants passing one or two stools per day and 90.4% passing loose or formed stools. There was no significant increase in the number of infants with diarrhea, whereas a decrease was observed in the number of infants with constipation after 1 month (p=0.001) and with colic after both 1 and 3 months (p<0.001). Regurgitation severity and crying decreased and parental satisfaction with stool consistency, formula acceptability, infant well-being, and sleep quality increased. Monitoring of adverse events did not reveal any safety concerns. Conclusion: Formulas containing LBG, prebiotics, and postbiotics were well tolerated and provided an effective strategy for managing infant regurgitation and gastrointestinal discomfort.

국내 액상발효유에서 분리한 유산균의 동정 및 소화관액 내성조사 (Identification and Tolerance-Test to Digestive Fluids of Lactobacilli Isolated from Korean Liquid Yogurts)

  • 국내 액상발효유 7개 회사 제품을 수거하여 미생물학적인 특성을 조사하였다. 7개 회사 제품(A, B, C, D, E, F 및 G)에서 분리한 8종의 유산균(a, b, b', c, d, e, f 및 g)을 동정해 본 결과 A회사 제품의 a균과 E회사 제품의 e균은 L. casei로 B회사 제품의 b균은 L. acidophilus로, B회사 제품의 b'균, C 회사 제품의 c균 및 G회사 제품의 g균은 L. jugurti로, F 회사 제품의 f균은 L. helveticus로, D회사 제품의 d균은 L. bulgaricus로 각각 동정되었다. L. helveticus로 동정된 f균과 L. jugurti로 동정된 c균은 인공위액에 대한 내성은 높았으나 담즙산에 대한 내성은 높지 못했다. L. acidophilus로 동정된 b균과 L. casei로 동정된 a균 및 e균은 인공위액과 담즙산에 대한 내성이 모두 높았고, L. bulgaricus로 동정된 d균과 L. jugurti 동정된 b'균 및 g균은 인공위액과 담즙산에 대한 내성이 모두 낮았다.

코끼리조개의 섭식활동 환경내성에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Feeding Activity and Environmental Tolerance of Geoduck Clam, Panope japonica)

  • 코끼리조개 (Panope japonica)의 인공종묘생산 기술개발을 위한 연구의 일환으로 모패의 생태적인 습성을 구명하기 위하여 1994년 1월부터 12월까지 강원도 양양군 인구연안에 서식하는 코끼리조개를 대상으로 섭식활동 및 환경내성 등을 시험한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 코끼리조개의 소화관 내용물에서 관찰된 먹이생물의 종류는 총 20속 33종으로 식물성 플랑크톤이 87.9%를 차지하였다. 계절별 총 출현종류는 봄에 21종으로 가장 많이 출현하였고, 여름에는 11종으로 가장 적었다. 연중 출현하는 종은 Nitzschia longissima and Rizosolenia alata 의 2종이었다. 소화관 중량은 계절적으로 변화가 뚜렷한 년주기적이었으며, 겨울부터 봄에 걸쳐 증가하였고, 여름에는 가장 낮은 경향을 보였다. 코끼리조개 모패의 환경에 대한 내성시험에서 수온은 5-$20^{\circ}C$범위에서 서식이 적합하였고, 저온에는 강한 편이나 고온에는 약한 편이었다. 염분은 25-35%의 범위에서 서식이 적합하였고, 저염분에는 약한 편이었다. 산소소비량은 수온이 상승할수록 증가하였으며, $15^{\circ}C$에서 8.12 ml/kg/h, $25^{\circ}C$에서 15.83 ml/kg/h 로 수온에 따라 큰 차를 보였다.

Assessment of lactic acid bacteria isolated from the chicken digestive tract for potential use as poultry probiotics

  • Objective: The use of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics in animal feed has received considerable attention in recent decades. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have remarkable functional properties promoting host health and are major microorganisms for probiotic purposes. The aim of this study was to characterize LAB strains of the chicken digestive tract and to determine their functional properties for further use as potential probiotics in poultry. Methods: A total of 2,000 colonies were isolated from the ileum and cecal contents of the chickens based on their phenotypic profiles and followed by a preliminary detection for acid and bile tolerance. The selected 200 LAB isolates with exhibited well-tolerance in acid and bile conditions were then identified by sequencing the 16S rDNA gene, followed by acid and bile tolerance, antimicrobial activity, adhesion to epithelial cells and additional characteristics on the removal of cholesterol. Then, the two probiotic strains (L. ingluviei and L. salivarious) which showed the greatest advantage in vitro testing were selected to assess their efficacy in broiler chickens. Results: It was found that 200 LAB isolates that complied with all measurement criteria belonged to five strains, including L. acidophilus (63 colonies), L. ingluviei (2 colonies), L. reuteri (58 colonies), L. salivarius (72 colonies), and L. saerimneri (5 colonies). We found that the L. ingluviei and L. salivarius can increase the population of LAB and Bifidobacterium spp. while reducing Enterobacteria spp. and Escherichia coli in the cecal content of chickens. Additionally, increased concentrations of valeric acid and short chain fatty acids were also observed. Conclusion: This study indicates that all five Lactobacillus strains isolated from gut contents of chickens are safe and possess probiotic properties, especially L. ingluviei and L. salivarius. Future studies should evaluate the potential for growth improvement in broilers.

Effectiveness and Tolerance of a Locust Bean Gum-Thickened Formula: A Real-Life Study

  • Purpose: Thickened infant formulas reduce regurgitation frequency and volume. Because the digestive tolerance of locust bean gum-containing formulas is controversial, the effectiveness and tolerance of a locust bean gum-thickened formula in infants presenting with regurgitation was evaluated. No other interventions were allowed during the 1 month follow-up period. Methods: We conducted an open, prospective, observational study of a locust bean gum-thickened formula administered to infants presenting with moderate to severe regurgitation according to parents during 1 month. Effectiveness and tolerance were assessed by evaluating gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life indicators. Results: A total of 2,604 infants with an average age of 9.3±4.3 weeks were included in this 1 month trial. Regurgitation frequency and estimated volume decreased significantly (p<0.001) and the episodes were resolved completely in 48% of the infants. A significant decrease in duration of crying and episodes of gas (p<0.001), with improvement in quality of life parameters, was observed. Stool frequency increased and stool consistency softened (p<0.001) to levels within the physiologic range, consistent with the increased fiber load (0.42 g/100 mL). Conclusion: Locust bean gum-thickened formula decreased infant regurgitation, was well tolerated, and improved parental quality of life. Stool composition and frequency of the infants remained within the physiologic range.

육계 맹장 유산균의 성장특성에 관한 연구 (Study on Growth Characteristics of Lactobacillus Isolated from Broiler Cecum)

  • This study was investigated to observe Lactobacillus spp. population of poultry digestive organ, duodenum, ilium, cecum and colon by growing steps and to select of valuable lactobacilli as probiotics. Two strains of male broiler commercial chickens, Hybrid and Ross, were used to evaluate population of Lactobacillus spp. in intestinal tracts. Three strains of Lactobacillus were identified, and bile salts environment. The number of lactovacilli was the lowest in duodenum compared to other intestinal tracts which had similar population. Population of Lactobacillus was maintained constantly regardless growing steps after one week of age. Identification of Lactobacillus from cecum resulted in L.reuteri BC5, L. crispatus BC7, L.reuteri BC9. All strains was depressed in pH 1 and 2, although two strains could survive for one hour at pH 2. And they could survive at pH 4 for 4hours. In bile salts tolerance, L.reuteri BC5, L.crispatus BC7 were maintained for 2 hours, but the growth reduced from 2hours. Growth of L.reuteri BC9 was increased continuously. In conclusion, Lactobacillus of intestinal tracts were established at first week, and maintained constant population. They were influenced on severe acidic condition and bile salts. Cecal Lactobacillus has different growth charcteristics by strains.

Multilayer Coating with Red Ginseng Dietary Fiber Improves Intestinal Adhesion and Proliferation of Probiotics in Human Intestinal Epithelial Models

  • To exert their beneficial effects, it is essential for the commensal bacteria of probiotic supplements to be sufficiently protected as they pass through the low pH environment of the stomach, and effectively colonize the intestinal epithelium downstream. Here, we investigated the effect of a multilayer coating containing red ginseng dietary fiber, on the acid tolerance, and the adhesion and proliferation capacities of three Lactobacillus strains (Limosilactobacillus reuteri KGC1901, Lacticaseibacillus casei KGC1201, Limosilactobacillus fermentum KGC1601) isolated from Panax ginseng, using HT-29 cells, mucin-coated plates, and human pluripotent stem cell-derived intestinal epithelial cells as in vitro models of human gut physiology. We observed that the multilayer-coated strains displayed improved survival rates after passage through gastric juice, as well as high adhesion and proliferation capacities within the various gut epithelial systems tested, compared to their uncoated counterparts. Our findings demonstrated that the multilayer coat effectively protected commensal microbiota and led to improved adhesion and colonization of intestinal epithelial cells, and consequently to higher probiotic efficacy.

A number of synthetic antiepileptic drugs are available in practice, however their effectiveness does not grip true with the entire population suffering from epilepsy. Traditional systems of medicine are popular in developing countries and most of the population relies on traditional medicines for their primary health care need. Medicinal plants to be an important source of traditional medicines. Various plants are used for the treatment of epilepsy in traditional system of medicines and various plants are yet to be scientifically investigated. Phyto-constituents have been the basis of treatment of human diseases including epilepsy. Herbal products are extensively used for the treatment of many diseases worldwide and where allopathic fails or has severe side effects. Psycho neural drugs are also have very serious side effects like physical dependence, tolerance, deterioration of cognitive function and effect on respiratory, digestive and immune system. So the treatments through herbal medicines are widely used across the world due to their wide applicability and therapeutic efficacy with least side effects, which in turn has accelerated the research regarding natural therapy. In this review we have summarized some herbal anti-epileptics.

  • Guava ($Psidium$ $guajava$) contain a great deal of polyphenol compound and work on the treatment of $Diabetes$ $mellitus$ effectively. In this study, the bioactivities of aqueous extract (GLEx) of guava leaf were investigated. Total phenolic contents of GLEx was 266.9 mg tan/g. The effects of GLEx on digestive enzymes, ${\alpha}$-amylase, maltase and sucrase were investigated. $IC_{50}$ values of GLEx against ${\alpha}$-amylase, maltase and sucrase were 0.65 mg/$m{\ell}$, 2.0 mg/$m{\ell}$ and 3.5 mg/$m{\ell}$ respectively. The effect of GLEx on oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed in normal ICR mouse, control (dstilled water) and GLEx (aqueous extract of Guava leaf) were co-administered orally with glucose, showed reducing effect on the blood glucose level. The guava is likely to useful for prevention or improvement of hyperglycemia by lowering the blood glucose level and inhibiting glycoside hydrolase activity.
