  • Thermal shock stress intensity factor for an edge-cracked plate subjected to thermal shock is obtained from Bueckner's weight function method. It is shown that thermal shock stress intensity factor has maximum values with variation of time and crack length and that there is most dangerous crack length. By comparing thermal shock stress intensity factor with fracture toughness, the fracture time and critical temperature difference due to thermal shock are determined theoretically. Under constant thermal shock temperature difference, and increase of crack length is shown to increase fracture time. The theoretical fracture time is compared with experimental value measured by acoustic emission method with soda lime glass.

  • The objectives of this study are : (1) to measure the level of economic stress perception in Korean farm households. (2) to identify the effects of related variables such as socio-demographic variables and economic stability. The data from 505 farm households' wives was analyzed using statistical methods such as frequency, correlation, oneway ANOVA, lease significant difference test, and stepwise multiple regression. The major findings are as follows : The mean value of economic stress perception on the 505 wives was 33.5 points out of a possible 100. Among 3 subsectors, income stress perception had highest score. Socio- demographic variables such as family size, type of farm household, financial manager, debt, credit . grant assistant, wife's age, and educational level of the wife had a significant difference on the economic stress perception of wives in the ANOVA analysis. So did the objective and subjective evaluation of economic stability. As a result of multiple regression analysis, economic stability, debt presence, and wife age were verified explaining 23% of the variance of economic stress perception. Therefore, it can be said that farm wives had relatively high economic stress perception in the case of low economic stability, getting into debt and low age.

  • The stress distribution in the vicinity of the crack tip in the fracture mechanics is ordenarily indicated by the stress intensity factor. In the analysis of stress intensity factors, there are many theoretical and experimental methods. The stress analysis in photoelastic technique is usually made by using the difference of the principal stress of isochromatic fringe patterns. In this paper, the teflon molding technique is adopted to make a test specimen with a circular arc-crack, and that upgraded the accuracy of experiment. As the result, the experimental values of the stress intensity factors for the circular disk with a straight crack are coincided with the theoretical values. But, there is quite a difference between this expermental results on the finite plate for circular arc-crack and its theoretical values on the infinite one. Therefore, a boundary condition with regard to the loading condition on finite disk must be considered.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of the modernity of mothers and children's misbehavior on parenting stress of mothers. The subjects of this study was 210 mothers who lived in Korea. The results of this study were as follows: First, No significant statistical difference was found on the parental modernity of mothers by children's sex. Second, No significant statistical difference was found on parenting stress of mothers by the level of education of mothers but significant statistical difference was found on parenting stress by the level of parental modernity. Third, the more mothers had the level of education, the more mothers had parental modernity. Fourth, more children had misbehavior, the more mothers had parenting stress, Fifth, the more mothers had the parental modernity, the less mothers had parenting stress. These results suggest that the parenting stress was effected by both parenting modernity and children's misbehavior but also it was much relevant to children's misbehavior than parenting modernity.

  • Intensive farming methods that do not guarantee animal welfare can induce stress in pigs. Stress, in turn, can reduce their disease resistance and influence their hormones and metabolites in such a manner that productivity is negatively affected. This study was conducted to compare the stress related factors and blood characteristics of pigs raised on conventional farms and those raised on animal welfare farms. We measured the levels of cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine, biochemical parameters in blood and glycogen, L-lactate and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in muscle, as physiological markers of indicating the stress in conventional farm pigs (Control, n=10) and animal welfare farm pigs (Welfare, n=10). We found that there was a significant difference in the albumin-globulin ratio (A/G ratio), as well as the albumin (ALB), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels between the two farms. Epinephrine was significantly higher in conventional farm, while level of norepinephrine was higher in animal welfare farm. There was no significant difference in cortisol, which is known as a stress hormone, across the two groups of farms. Muscular glycogen content was significantly high in animal welfare farm pigs. While L-lactate tended to be low in the animal welfare farm pigs, the difference between them and the conventional farm cohorts was not significant. HSP70 showed high levels of expression in conventional farm. Thus, we suggested that blood parameter results showed a stress response in the livers of conventional farm, and that catecholamine hormones, glycogen, L-lactate and HSP70 can be used as physiological factors of assessing animal welfare.

  • This study examines the effects of the discretization schemes on numerical solutions of viscoelastic fluid flows. For this purpose, a temporally evolving mixing layer, a two-dimensional vortex pair interacting with a wall, and a turbulent channel flow are selected as the test cases. We adopt a fourth-order compact scheme (COM4) for polymeric stress derivatives in the momentum equations. For convective derivatives in the constitutive equations, the first-order upwind difference scheme (UD) and artificial diffusion scheme (AD), which are commonly used in the literature, show most stable and smooth solutions even for highly extensional flows. However, the stress fields are smeared too much and the flow fields are quite different from those obtained by higher-order upwind difference schemes for the same flow parameters. Among higher-order upwind difference schemes, a third-order compact upwind difference scheme (CUD3) shows most stable and accurate solutions. Therefore, a combination of CUD3 for the convective derivatives in the constitutive equations and COM4 for the polymeric stress derivatives in the momentum equations is recommended to be used for numerical simulation of highly extensional flows.
