  • Because of high torque and easiness of speed control, Direct Current(DC) motors have been used for a long time. But, its applications are limited in circumstance and performance, since they contained brush and commutator. The commutation characteristic gives effect to life and performance of the DC motor. Naturally, the commutation characteristic analysis is strongly required. In this paper, With the result of finite element analysis, The inductance is calculated each rotor position and applied to the voltage equations coupled with commutation equation. Also, contact resistances of brush/commutator assembly are considered using contact area and brush width converted with commutator segments. The time derivative term in the differential equation is solved in time difference method. This algorithm was applied to 2-pole shunt DC motor. We considered commutation characteristic by changing contact resistance between brush and commutator segment.

  • The numerical analysis of the negative pressure porous gas bearings is presented. The pressure distribution is calculated using the finite difference method. The Reynolds equation and Darcy's equation are solved simultaneously. The air bearing stiffness and damping are evaluated using the perturbation method. Rectangular uniform grid is employed to model the bearing. The vacuum preloading is considered. The pressure in the vacuum pocket is assumed to be a constant negative pressure. The total load, stiffness, damping and flow rate are calculated fur several geometrical configurations and several values of negative pressure. It is found that too large vacuum pocket can result in negative total force.

  • In this paper, we propose a second-order prediction/correction (SPC) domain decomposition method for solving one dimensional linear hyperbolic partial differential equation $u_{tt}+a(x,t)u_t+b(x,t)u=c(x,t)u_{xx}+{\int}(x,t)$. The method can be applied to variable coefficients problems and singular problems. Unconditional stability and error analysis of the method have been carried out. Numerical results support stability and efficiency of the method.

  • This paper presents a scalable coding method for depth images by considering the quality of synthesized images in virtual views. First, we design a new edge detection algorithm that is based on calculating the depth difference between two neighboring pixels within the depth map. By choosing different thresholds, this algorithm generates a scalable bit stream that puts larger depth differences in front, followed by smaller depth differences. A scalable scheme is also designed for coding depth pixels through a layered sampling structure. At the receiver side, the full-resolution depth image is reconstructed from the received bits by solving a partial-differential-equation (PDE). Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the rate-distortion performance of synthesized images at virtual views and achieves better visual quality.

  • We present a imaging method of seismic sources by time reversal propagation of seismic waves. Time-reversal wave propagation is actively used in medical imaging, non destructive testing and waveform tomography. Time-reversal wave propagation is based on the time-reversal invariance and the spatial reciprocity of the wave equation. A signal is recorded by an array of receivers, time-reversed and then back-propagated into the medium. The time-reversed signal propagates back into the same medium and the energy refocuses back at the source location. The increasing power of computers and numerical methods makes it possible to simulate more accurately the propagation of seismic waves in heterogenous media. In this work, a staggered-grid finite-difference solution of the elastic wave equation is employed for the wave propagation simulation. With numerical experiments, we show that the time-reversal imaging will enable us to explore the spatio-temporal history of complex earthquake.

  • An analytic nodal expansion method has been derived for the multigroup neutron diffusion equation in 2-D cylindrical(R-Z) coordinate. In this method we used the second order Legendre polynomials for source, and transverse leakage, and then the diffusion eqaution was solved analytically. This formalism has been applied to 2-D LWR model. $textsc{k}$$_{eff}$, power distribution, and computing time have been compared with those of ADEP code(finite difference method). The benchmark showed that the analytic nodal expansion method in R-Z coordinate has good accuracy and quite faster than the finite difference method. This is another merit of using R-Z coordinate in that the transverse integration over surfaces is better than the linear integration over length. This makes the discontinuity factor useless.s.

  • In order to predict the behavior of column confined with spirals, the accurate estimation of confining stress by spiral is very important, Thus a number of models have been proposed for calculating the confining stress by spiral. However, in these equations, it was not considered the effects of the difference of mechanical characteristics related to the application of high strength concrete and spiral in structures. In this study, a model equation for calculation of the confining stress by spiral was proposed based on the test results investigated here. The proposed equation included the effects of concrete strength, spacing and yield strength of spirals

  • This paper provides equation for computing the AOQ of an unreliable random FMS. The FMS is described using open central server model with network GI/G/S Queues. And the equation for AOQ is simplified due to computational complexities. Numerical example is used to show the effect of AOQ according to inspection location, reliability of equipment in an FMS, and the effect of difference of routing probability is compared after finding the AOQL of each machine center.

  • In this paper, design sensivity of plate natural frequency is computed for thickness design variables. Once the variational equation is derived from Lagrange quation using the virtual displacement, governing energy bilinear form is obtained and sensivity equation is formulated through the first variation. Natural frequency is obtained using the commercial FEM code and the accuracy of sensivity is verified by finite difference. The accuracy of natural frequency and sensivity improves for the fine mesh model.
