Diesel power plant(DPP) with the medium speed diesel engine is operated under the very severe condition in aspect of load and operating time as compared with the marine diesel generator set. So, minimized vibration level have to be insured for the more stable operation of engine and generator. The vibration of generator set mainly comes from the resonance between the rigid modes by resilient mount or distortion modes by structural stiffness and the excitation forces of engine. Then, avoidance of resonance with structural modification is generally well known. In this paper, the first order vibration in non-resonance range and local vibration modes were investigated by impact test, response/ODS(operational deflection shape) measurement and 3D finite element analysis for the additional reduction of vibration. The proposed countermeasures were actually applied and their final effects were verified through the in-situ measurement.
The development of excitation control system (ECS) for emergency diesel generator in nuclear power plant is the replacement project of existing control system to resolve the maintenance problems caused by aging and obsolescence, The excitation control system is classified as a safety-related system. To guarantee the performance of developing excitation control system is equal to or higher than that of other systems, establishing the quality assurance scheme, doing software verification and validation activities, and planning equipment qualification. In this paper, we'd like to introduce the equipment qualification of excitation control system.

In this paper, enhanced stand-alone operation and development of Matlab/Simulink model of emergency diesel based hybrid energy system is presented. Simulations based on the remote community or islands were performed for PV-diesel-battery hybrid system. Modeling of PV-diesel-battery integrated system is done to perform under the solar radiation and load conditions on Matlab/Simulink platform. The models of diesel generator unit, battery energy storage system, PV and frequency-power control are developed and simulation studies have been carried out under various conditions using Matlab/Simulink and SimPowerSystem. It is demonstrated that the proposed system can provide reliable and good quality power to the customers in diesel synchronous generator-based hybrid energy systems.

Introducing renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic arrays, in microgrids that supply remote regions with electricity represents a significant leap in electricity generation. Combining photovoltaic panels and diesel engines is one of the most common ways to supply electricity to rural communities. Such hybrid systems can reduce the cost of electricity generation in these remote power systems because they use free energy to balance the power generated by diesel engines. However, the combination of renewable energy sources and diesel engines tends to complicate the sizing and control of the entire system due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. This study sought to investigate this issue in depth. It proposes a robust hybrid controller that can be used to facilitate optimum power sharing between a PV power source and diesel generators based on the dynamics of the available PV energy at any given time. The study also describes a hybrid PV-diesel power plant's essential functional parts that produce electricity for a microgrid using a renewable energy source. Power control needs to be adjusted to reduce the cost of power generation.

Structural vibrations of adjacent buildings, manufacturing factories and engines on the stationary diesel power plant were increased by the variation of phase angle between two engines sometimes. In this paper, top bracings and synchrophaser have been introduced in order to reduce these vibrations. As a result, all of structural vibrations were greatly improved by the phase adjustment of 6th order X-mode vibration with these.
This paper represents an analysis of the economic impact of firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures in diesel engine power plants. The objects of analysis is a power plant with electricity generation capacity (300 kW). Using performance data of original diesel engines, the fuel consumption characteristics of the duel fuel engines were simulated. Then, economic assessment was carried out using the performance data and the net present value method. A special focus was given to the evaluation of fuel cost saving when firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures instead of the pure diesel firing case. Analyses were performed by assuming fuel price changes in the market as well as by using current prices. The analysis results showed that co-firing of natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil would provide considerable fuel cost saving, leading to meaningful economic benefits.

An Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) is one of the safety related equipments of a Nuclear Power Plant. The seismic capacity of an EDG in nuclear power plants influences the seismic safety of the plants significantly. A recent study showed that the increase of the seismic capacity of the EDG could reduce the core damage frequency (CDF) remarkably. It is known that the major failure mode of the EDG is a concrete coning failure due to a pulling out of the anchor bolts. The use of base isolators instead of anchor bolts can increase the seismic capacity of the EDG without any major problems. This study introduces a seismic risk analysis method and presents sample results about the seismically isolated and conventional EDG system.
The nuclear power plants in South Korea have been designed in accordance with the U.S. Regulatory Guide 1.60 (R.G 1.60) design spectrum of which the peak frequency range is 2-10 Hz. The characteristics of the earthquakes at the Korea nuclear power plant sites were observed to be closer to that of Central and Eastern United States (CEUS) than the R.G 1.60, which is a lower amplification in a low frequency range, and a higher amplification in a high frequency range. The possibility of failure for sensitive power plant components in the high frequency range has been considered and evaluated. In this study, in order to improve the reliability of nuclear plant and administrative control procedures, seismic tests of an emergency diesel generator (EDG) were conducted using a shaking table under both high and low frequency ranges. From the tests, oil/lubricant leaks from the bolt connections, the fuel filter and the fuel inlet were observed. Therefore, the check list of nuclear plant components after an earthquake should include bolt connections of EDG as well as anchor bolts.
The purpose of this paper is to provide technical background, techniques and actual diesel engine signature analysis evaluation result. Engine signature analysis(ESA) is a process for monitoring the material condition of diesel engine using external sensors, eliminating the need to periodically disassemble the engine. ESA is also used to balanced the engine. Engine balancing is the process of tuning the engine so that all cylinders carry equal load. ESA is a useful tool to non-intrusively determine the operability and performance and assessment of the material condition of internal component of a diesel engine.
This study evaluates the performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system for the vibration and seismic isolation of an Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) by measuring its operational vibration and seismic responses. The vibration performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by the vibration measurements for an identical EDG set with different base systems - one with an anchor bolt system and the other with a coil spring-viscous damper system. The seismic performance of the coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by seismic tests with a scaled model of a base-isolated EDG on a shaking table. The effects of EDG base isolation on the fragility curve and core damage frequency in a nuclear power plant were also investigated through a case study.
