  • In this paper, a two-dimensional transient ground-coupled numerical model for slab-on-grade foundation is developed and integrated into EnergyPlus. A validation analysis is first presented to ensure that for the developed building foundation heat transfer module is properly implemented within EnergyPlus. Then, the predictions from the developed model are compared to those obtained from the simplified building foundation model currently used in EnergyPlus. The results show that the developed foundation heat transfer module accounts better for the effects of the ground thermal mass attributed to the ground than the simplified foundation model currently used in EnergyPlus.

  • A water wall system is one of the most important components of a boiler in a thermal power plant, and it is a nonlinear Multi-Input and Multi-Output (MIMO) system, with 6 inputs and 3 outputs. Three models are developed and comp for the controller design, including a linear model, a multilayer feed-forward neural network (MFNN) model and an Echo State Network (ESN) model. First, the linear model is developed by linearizing a given nonlinear model and is analyzed as a function of the operating point. Second, the MFNN and the ESN are developed by using training data from the nonlinear model. The three models are validated using Matlab with nonlinear input-output data that was not used during training.

  • In Korea, the ITS project has been progressed to improve traffic mobility and safety. Further, it is to relieve traffic jam by supply real time travel information for drivers and to promote traffic convenience and safety. It is important that the traffic information is provided accurately. This study was conducted outlier elimination and missing data adjustment to improve accuracy of raw data. A method for raise reliability of travel time prediction information was presented. We developed Historical Profile model and adjustment formula to reflect quality of interrupted flow. We predicted travel time by developed Historical Profile model and adjustment formula and verified by comparison between developed model and existing model such as Neural Network model and Kalman Filter model. The results of comparative analysis clarified that developed model and Karlman Filter model similarity predicted in general situation but developed model was more accurate than other models in incident situation.

  • A mathematical model was developed to predict the fuel consumption rate consumed by agricultural tractors under arbitrary loaded conditions. The model utilizes the measured data on the fuel consumptions at the full load and at the rated engine speed with partial loads, which can easily be obtained from the official OECD tractor test reports. It was found from the analysis of the measured fuel consumption data that the fuel consumptions at two different speeds does not change with power. The model was developed based on this fact and validated with the measured data of the 159 tractor test reports. The fuel consumptions predicted by the model were compared with those measured under the partially loaded conditions specified in the official OECD tractor test code II. The percent errors of the predicted fuel consumptions were in a range from 0.36 to 2.86% which assured that the developed fuel consumption model can be used practically to predict the fuel consumptions at any speed and power combinations. It was also shown that the developed model predicts the fuel consumption rate better than the Grisso's model.

  • A progressive failure analysis procedure for composite laminates is developed in here and in the companion paper. An anisotropic plastic constitutive model for fiber-reinforced composite material, is developed, which is simple and efficient to be implemented into computer program for a predictive analysis procedure of composites. In current development of the constitutive model, an incremental elastic-plastic constitutive model is adopted to represent progressively the nonlinear material behavior of composite materials until a material failure is predicted. An anisotropic initial yield criterion is established that includes the effects of different yield strengths in each material direction, and between tension and compression. Anisotropic work-hardening model and subsequent yield surface are developed to describe material behavior beyond the initial yield under the general loading condition. The current model is implemented into a computer code, which is Predictive Analysis for Composite Structures (PACS), and is presented in the companion paper. The accuracy and efficiency of the anisotropic plastic constitutive model are verified by solving a number of various fiber-reinforced composite laminates with and without geometric discontinuity. The comparisons of the numerical results to the experimental and other numerical results available in the literature indicate the validity and efficiency of the developed model.

  • This paper develops a technology level quantification (TLQ) model by utilizing a learning curve. Original learning curve shows the relationship between cumulative number of units and the required time for the unit. On the other hand, in our developed model, the technology level, such as speed of production and quality of the produced items, is expressed as a function of not cumulative number of units but time, for increasing generality. Furthermore, for expressing each learning that consists of conceptual learning and operational learning, S-curve is utilized in our developed model. By fitting the S-curve and/or decomposing into some activities, our TQL model can be applied to approximate organizational and complicated process. Some variations in time and levels, parameters of our developed model are shown. By using the parameters, the procedure to identify our developed model is proposed. Also, the influential factors for the parameters of our developed model are discussed with classifying the factors into technoware, infoware, humanware, and orgaware. The expected technology level is utilized for expecting the capacity of production system, and the expected capacity can be utilized in predicting various changes in the organization and deciding managerial decision about TT. A case study in manufacturing industry shows the effectiveness of the developed model.

  • In this study, a distributed rainfall-runoff model is developed using a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm and the real-time runoff updating algorithm. The developed model consists of relatively simple governing equations of hydrologic processes in order to apply developed algorithms and to enhance the efficiency of computational time which is drawback of distributed model application. The variability of topographic characteristics and flow direction according to various spatial resolution were analyzed using DEM(Digital Elevation Model) data. As a preliminary process using fine resolution DEM data, a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm was developed to maintain detail flow information in distributed rainfall-runoff simulation which has strong advantage in computation efficiency and accuracy. Also, a real-time updating algorithm was developed to update current watershed condition. The developed model is able to hold the information of actual behavior of runoff process in low resolution simulation. Therefore it is expected the improvement of forecasting accuracy and computational efficiency.

  • In this research, a reach posture prediction based on a two-segment trunk model was made. Recently, reach posture prediction models have used inverse kinematics to provide a single posture that a person naturally takes, with a single segment trunk model that had some shortcomings. A two-segment trunk model was first developed with two links; pelvis link and lumbar-thoracic link. The former refers to the link from the hip joint to L5/S1 joint while the latter does the link from L5/S1 to the shoulder joint. Second, a reach prediction model was developed using the two-segment trunk model. As a result, more reliable equations for two-segment trunk motion were obtained, and the lean direction which refers to the movement direction of the trunk was not found to have a significant effect on the two-segment trunk motion. The results also showed that the hip joint is more preferred over L5/S1 to serve as a reference point for trunk models and the reach prediction model being developed predicted the real posture accurately.
