  • In this work, a nickel metal (Ni) electroplating on the activated carbon fiber (Ni/ACFs) surfaces was carried out to remove the toxic hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. The surface properties of the treated ACFs were determined by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K, SEM, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by a gas-detecting tube technique. As a result, the nickel metal contents on the ACF surfaces were increased with increasing the plating time. And, it was found that the specific surface area or the micropore volume of the ACFs studied was slightly decreased as increasing the plating time. Whereas, it was revealed that the HCl removal efficiency containing nickel metal showed higher efficiency values than that of untreated ACFs. These results indicated that the presence of nickel metal on the ACF surfaces played an important role in improving the HCl removal over the Ni/ACFs, due to the catalytic reactions between nickel and chlorine.

  • This paper introduced a novel multi-gas sensor detector with simple signal processing algorithm. This device was evaluated by investigating the characteristics of combustible materials using fire-generated smell and smoke. Plural sensors including TGS821, TGS2442, and TGS260X were equipped to detect carbon monoxide, hydrogen gas, and gaseous air contaminants which exist in cigarette smoke, respectively. Signal processing algorithm based on the difference of response times in fire-generated gases was implemented with early and accurately fire detection from multiple gas sensing signals. All fire experiments were performed in a virtual fire chamber. The cigarette, cotton fiber, hair, polyester fiber, nylon fiber, paper, and bread were used as a combustible material. This analyzing software and sensor controlling algorithm were embedded into 8-bit micro-controller. Also the detected multiple gas sensor signals were simultaneously transferred to the personnel computer. The results showed that the air pollution detecting sensor could be used as an efficient sensor for a fire detector which showed high sensitivity in volatile organic compounds. The proposed detecting algorithm may give more information to us compared to the conventional method for determining a threshold value. A fire detecting device with a multi-sensor is likely to be a practical and commercial technology, which can be used for domestic and office environment as well as has a comparatively low cost and high efficiency compared to the conventional device.

  • Wire ropes have been widely used in industrial applications, wherever heavy weight should be carried safely or mechanical energy should be transmitted fast. Especially, wire rope failures in operating elevator may lead to extensive property damage and serious injury to nearby personnel. Hence, it is very important to inspect wire rope periodically. Failure defection of wire rope requires fundamental knowledge of wire rope construction, rope behavior, properties of fault, sensing and signal processing method. In this research, the development of a new fault detecting system incorporating Hall-effect sensors to detect flaws such as abrasion, broken wire, corrosion and deformation for aged wire ropes in elevator, is described. For using a detector as a portable instrument, several performances for implementing sensing part with Hall-effect sensor, analog signal processing unit and programs are described. Experiments and field testing results for the implemented detecting system are also given. As a result, it is verified that the detecting system has good efficiency for inspecting faults of aged wire ropes in service.

  • A random effects model of a one-way layout contingency table is developed using a Dirichlet-multinomial distribution. A test statistic, say $T_k$, is suggested for detecting Dirichlet-multinomial departure from a multinomial distribution. It is shown that the $T_k$ test is asymptotically superior to the classical chi-square test based on the asymptotic relative efficiency. This superiority is further evidenced by a Monte Carlo simulation.

  • To represent shape characteristics of digital closed curve, many algorithms, mainly based on local properties, have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for detecting local curvature maxima which reflects context, i.e., structural or surrounding regional characteristics. The algorithm does not require the value of k as an input parameter which is the major problem in k-curvature method in digital curve, but calculates it at each point depening on the context. The algorithm has been applied to two dimensional image boundaries. The efficiency of the algorithm is addressed by comparing the result of existing contest dependent algorithm.

  • Building Energy commissioning is a process in which verifying and making the document during entire lifetime including planning, design, construction, test run of equipment, and maintenance to minimize the operational problems of building energy efficiency. The general commissioning is replacing the equipment or reconstructing the skin to achieve the performance for the design. This process is expensive and has the disadvantage of taking a long payback period by one operation. In this paper, we studied the monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) to increase the energy efficiency of buildings through analyzing energy use data. MBCx is modeling a building energy, comparing the real energy use with it, detecting the cause of falling the efficiency, and running the optimal operation regularly.

  • This paper describes algorithms for enhancing the reliability of measurements to verify the performance of energy efficiency programs with an simple method. Fundamentally, measurements contain erroneous data because of the various causes. and so proper procedures or schemes are prepared before the performance is evaluated. In this paper, we propose an approach for detecting and correcting an adulterate data, such as missing and bad data. Erroneous data are detected or corrected by pre-described measuring conditions, ensemble average, and standard deviation of measurements at measuring time. The proposed algorithms are tested by field test measurements. From case studies we drew the promising results.

  • To improve the luminance and efficiency of AC PDP, the effects of a square pulse applied to the address electrode during a sustain-period is investigated. Through this experiment, we confirmed the improvement of luminance and efficiency. We performed the temporal behavior measurement for the light emitted from AC PDP at floating state of the address electrode and at various auxiliary voltages (including ground state) applied to the address electrode using the scanned point detecting system. In the case of using an auxiliary voltage pulse, emission starts at the inner edges of the anode and cathode simultaneously. Also, we obtained the larger two discharge volumes compared with the normal sustain discharge where address electrode is floated.

  • The atmospheric pressure plasma treatments ($Ar/O_2$ and $Ar/N_2$) of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were carried out to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on carbon surfaces in order to enhance the hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) adsorption. Surface properties of the ACFs were determined by XPS and SEM. $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms were investigated by BET and D-R (Dubinin-Radushkevich) plot methods. The HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by HCl detecting tubes (range:1~40 or 40~1000 ppm). As experimental results, it was found that all plasma-treated ACFs showed the decrease in the pore volume, but the HCl removal efficiency showed higher level than that of the untreated ACFs. This result indicated that the plasma treatments led to the conformation of hydrophilic functional groups on the carbon surfaces, resulting in the increase of the interaction between the ACFs and HCl gas.

  • A 1.9-GHz linear CMOS power amplifier is presented. An adaptive bias circuit (ABC) that utilizes an AC ground to detect the power level of the input signal is proposed to enhance the linearity and efficiency of the power amplifier. The ABC utilizes the second harmonic component as the input to mitigate the distortion of the fundamental signal. The input power level of the ABC was detected at the AC ground located at the VDD node of the power amplifier. The output of the ABC was fed into the inputs of the power stage. The input signal distortion was mitigated by detecting the input power level at the AC ground. The power amplifier was designed using a 180 nm RFCMOS process to evaluate the feasibility of the application of the proposed ABC in the power amplifier. The measured output power and power-added efficiency were improved by 1.7 dB and 2.9%, respectively.
