  • A torsional guided wave mode was applied to detect a crack in a pipe. An array of electromagnetic acoustic transduce. (EMAT that can generate and receive torsional guided ultrasound with the frequency of 200kHz was designed and fabricated for testing a pipe of 2.5 inch diameter Artificial notches with various depths were fabricated in a bent feeder pipe mock-up and the detectability was examined from the distance of 2m of the specimen. The axial notches with the depth of 5% of wall thickness were successfully detected by a torsional mode (T(0,1)) generated by the EMAT However, it was found that the depth of defects was not related to the signal amplitude.

  • Ultrasonic testing is a kind of nondestructive test to detect a crack or discontinuity in materials or on material surfaces by sending ultrasound to it. This conventional ultrasonic technique has some limitations in reliably detecting crack or accurately assessing materials in the case of complex-shaped power plant components such as a turbine blade root. An alternative method for such a difficult inspection is highly needed. In this study, application of a phased array ultrasonic testing (UT) system to a turbine blade, one of the critical power plant components, has been considered, and the particular incident angle has been determined so that the greatest track detectability and the most accurate crack length evaluation nay be achieved. The response of ultrasonic phased array was also analyzed to establish a special method to determine the track )ength without moving the transducer. The result showed that the developed method for crack length assessment is a more accurate and effective method, compared with the conventional method.

  • The lock-in thermography was employed to evaluate the integrity of railway bogies. Prior to the actual application on railway bogies, in order to assess the detectability of known flaws, the calibration reference panel was prepared with various dimensions of artificial flaws. The panel was composed of structural steel, which was the same material with actual bogies. Through lock-in thermography evaluation, the optimal frequency of heat source was determined for the best flaw detection. Based on the defects information, the actual defect assessments on railway bogie were conducted with different types of railway bogies, which were used for the current operation. In summary, the defect assessment results with thermography method showed a good agreement as compared with the conventional inspection techniques. Moreover, it was found that the novel infrared thermography technique could be an effective way for the inspection and the detection of surface defects on bogies since the infrared thermography method provided rapid and non-contact mode for the investigation of railway bogies.

  • Originating from the Oort cloud, some comets disappear to impact against the Sun or to split up by strong gravitational force. Then they don't go back to the Oort cloud. They are called sungrazing comets. The comets are detected by sublimation of ices and ejection of gas and dust through solar heat close to the Sun. There exists the charge transfer from heavy ions in the solar wind to neutral atoms in the cometary atmosphere by interaction with the solar wind. Cometary atoms would be excited to high electronic levels and their do-excitation would result in X-ray emission, or it would be scattering of solar X-ray emission by very small cometary grains. We calculated the X-ray emission applying the model suggested by Mendis & Flammer (1984) and Cravens (1997). In our estimation, the sungrazing comet whose nucleus size is about 1 km in radius might be detectable within a distance of 3 solar radius from the sun on soft X-ray solar camera.

  • The width of a submarine's turbulent wake, using Shear-free and Ship wake theory, is proportional to $x^n,\;({\frac{1}{5}}{\leq}n<{\frac{1}{2}})$ If we assume submarine's length, width, velocity are 65m, 6.5m, 6kts respectively, and the minimum diffusion of turbulent wake ; ${\infty}\;x^{1/5}$, the width of wake behind the submarine is about 20m at 1.2km, 30m at 15km when there is no breaking waves on the sea surface. However, in the case of breaking waves, it is very limited to identify submarine's wake on the sea surface because wind generated turbulent wake has higher turbulent kinetic energy than that of submarine's wake. As a result, there is a high possibility to detect submarine's wake on the sea surface in the shallow water such as the Yellow-Sea using a proper detection method such as SAR. This means that in anti-submarine operations, non-acoustic sea surface serveillance applied turbulent wake will be very effective way to detect a submarine in near future. To do this we have to develop exact theory of submarine's turbulent wake above all.

  • Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a major indicator for monitoring climate change and detecting vegetation coverage. In order to retrieve NDVI, it is preprocessed using cloud masking and atmospheric correction. However, the preprocessed NDVI still has abnormally low values known as noise which appears in the long-term time series due to rainfall, snow and incomplete cloud masking. An existing method of using polynomial regression has some problems such as overestimation and noise detectability. Thereby, this study suggests a simple method using amoving average approach for correcting NDVI noises using SPOT/VEGETATION S10 Product. The results of the moving average method were compared with those of the polynomial regression. The results showed that the moving average method is better than the former approach in correcting NDVI noise.

  • A knock detection circuit that is based on the signal of an accelerometer installed on the engine block of a spark ignition automotive engine has a band-pass filter with a certain frequency as a parameter to be calibrated. A new statistical method for the determination of the frequency which is the most suitable for the knock detection in real-time applications is proposed. The method uses both the cylinder pressure and block vibration signals and is divided into two steps. In both steps, a new recursive trigonometric interpolation method that calculates the frequency contents of the signals is applied. The new trigonometric interpolation method developed in this paper improves the performance of the Discrete Fourier Transformation, allowing a flexible choice of the size of the moving window. In the first step, the frequency contents of the cylinder pressure signal are calculated. The knock is detected in the cylinder of the engine cycle for which at least one value of the maximal amplitudes calculated via the trigonometric interpolation method exceeds a threshold value indicating a considerable amount of oscillations in the pressure signal; this cycle is selected as a knocking cycle. In the second step, the frequency analysis is performed on the block vibration signal for the cycles selected in the previous step. The knock detectability, which is an individual cylinder attribute at a certain frequency, is verified via a statistical hypothesis test for testing the equality of two mean values, i.e. mean values of the amplitudes for knocking and non-knocking cycles. Signal-to-noise ratio is associated in this paper with the value of t-statistic. The frequency with the largest signal-to-noise ratio (the value of t-statistic) is chosen for implementation in the engine knock detection circuit.

  • In this paper, we propose the low sldelobe digital doppler filter bank design algorithm which is practically applicable to coherent radar equipment in complex air-defense system. Using the proposed algorithm, we can obtain a digital doppler filter bank of lower peak sidelobe level and higher clutter suppression capability. In this method, it is possible to achieve higher target-detectability without loss of Target SNR. The proposed algorithms are verified by simulations and experiments.

  • Benomyl(Methyl-1-(Butyl Carbamoyl)-Benzimidazole-2-yl-Carbamate) is widely used as pre- and post-harvest pesticide. It converts into MBC(Carbendarzime:Benzimidazole-2-yl-carbamate) and butyl-isocyanate in mild condition. In this study, three analytical methods for MBC were compared in view of detectability, correctness, and sensitivity. The first and second are HPLC analytical method employing the UV detection of MBC. Our new third method was modification of PFBB(pentafluoro-benzylbromide) derivatization method with GC-ECD & MSD. The average recoveries and detection limit of MBC in the newly modified method are 95% and $0.001{\mu}g/g$ in whole bean and bean sprouts respectively. This new method prevent pesticide analysis from misdetecting in bean and bean sprouts.

  • This study reviewed camouflage techniques to reduce the visual detect-ability of aircraft. Visual camouflage can be defined as the process of making objects less visible. Aircraft visual camouflage delays detection of the aircraft position, speed, and flight direction. Multi-tone and counter-shaded schemes are generally adopted as camouflage patterns for close-air-support aircraft and air-superiority aircraft, respectively. Another study showed that the monotone scheme is also efficient when the hue and brightness of the camouflage color are controlled correctly. Active camouflage techniques for aircraft have been studied to increase the camouflage effectiveness. In particular, counter-illumination techniques using electroluminescence devices can minimize the difference in brightness between the aircraft and sky background. Active camouflage techniques are expected to enhance the survivability of low-altitude UAVs, which are vulnerable to visual detection.
