  • Arduino is an open-source prototyping platform. It has been used in diverse areas including media-art, simulation and interaction devices. The Arduino application does not provide an effective form of software design specification, since it is basically developed in C Programming language. In this paper, we propose a design method for the Arduino applications using the extension mechanism of the UML(Unified Modeling Language). The proposed method is enable to specify the main function of Arduino applications like digital I/O and analog I/O in UML notations.

  • Hydraulic manipulators have been widely used in many different fields due to their high force/torque to inertia ratio. The increased speed of hydraulic manipulators requires solutions to problems ranging from mechanical design to the need to determine a robot model suitable for model-based control. As a solution, this paper presents the integration of SolidWorks with Simscape for designing and controlling hydraulic manipulators. The integration provides a platform for the rapid control prototyping of a hydraulic robot without the need to build actual prototypes. The mechanical drawings of a manipulator are first created using Solidworks and are then imported into Simscape, where the manipulator is represented by connected block diagrams based on the principle of physical modeling. Simulation examples for a 3D manipulator made by KNR SYSTEM INC are verified to show the effectiveness of the presented platform.

  • Time to market and cost-efficient production are some of the challenge that manufacturing industries face. Modern methods of engineering can't help such organizations attain competitive advantage. To help these situations, MEMPHIS (Middleware for Exchanging Machinery and Product Data in Highly Immersive Systems) was introduced as an approach that enables VE (Virtual Engineering) and links engineering applications with VR (Virtual Reality) solutions. Thus an environment is provided to implement virtual design reviews and enable the application of virtual prototyping methods. However MEMPHIS could just handle Product data for virtual design review and simulation. In this paper, we newly define and develop the extended MEMPHIS that enables virtual manufacturing with Process, Resource and Plant data as well as Product data.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for face recognition to use in wearable/mobile products. The design flow starts from the system specification to implementation process on silicon. The entire process is carried out using a FPGA-based prototyping platform environment for design and verification of the target SoC. To ensure that the implemented face recognition SoC satisfies the required performances metrics, time analysis and recognition tests were performed. The motivation behind the work is a single chip implementation of face recognition system for target applications.

  • It become increasingly important to design user interface to carry low complexity. The cognitive limitations of users severely restrict utility of highly intelligent but complex modern systems. Since humans are known to use schemas to reduce cognitive complexity, imposing good consistency to an interface design that may help that user form useful schemas will provide powerful control over the complexity. This present a research effort to develop a quantitative method for evaluating interface complexity that the user would experience planning his or her course of action. Taking into account the user's potential schemas, a quantitative measure based on information theory was develped to assess the navigational complexity. This approach does not rely on the subjective judgment of the researcher as most schemes dealing with user schemas do. The proposed method may benefit the rapid prototyping approach to design a better user interface by allowing handy assessment of the design.

  • Triangular mesh models are widely used in reverse engineering, computer graphics, rapid prototyping and NC(numerical controller) tool-path generation. Triangular mesh models are generated from point clouds, surface models and solid models. A halfedge-based triangular mesh data structure is proposed and the development considerations are presented. In the presented data structure, halfedge is the key data structure. Halfedge stores its triangle index and the order in the triangle. Triangles do not store the halfedge lists explicitly. Halfedge is referred by value and defined when it is required. Proposed data structure supports four design requirements: efficient rendering, compact memory, supporting efficient algorithms and easy programming.

  • This paper deals with a 'Designeer' education program that has a specific objective of educating design to undergraduate students in mechanical engineering with the aim of enhancing their ability of collaboration with designers when they are going to work in the field after graduation. The entire curriculum of the Designeer education program is introduced first, the end of which two-semester Capstone Design Courses for senior students is offered to let them practice all the knowledge and skills in a project-based learning environment. Learning specific matters such as sketching & visual thinking, prototyping and user experience design is one thing and practicing those knowledge and skills into a Capstone Design project is another. At this point, design thinking process needs to be in place to give students a foresight of one-year journey and to ensure that they will produce a desirable, feasible and viable product at the end of the year when they define the right problem at the beginning. Their frustrations and discoveries while applying design thinking throughout the year is explained by taking an example of a Robot Vacuum Cleaner design project. Finally, we provide real examples of effective methods to practice divergent and convergent phases.

  • This research investigates how digital design agencies and client companies incorporate design thinking-a human-centered approach to solving difficult problems-into their website development processes. Based on a literature review on the design-thinking-driven web development process, multiple case studies of award-winning website projects were performed by in-depth interviews with key practitioners. Through analyses of these cases, their user-centered approaches for website innovation were identified according to the following four phases: web planning (discovery and defining phases) and web design and development (development and delivery phases). Moreover, distinct approaches of design thinking practices were identified according to two website types: a brand promotion website with a killer brand storytelling approach; and a service channel website with a strategic UI/UX-driven approach. Next, the key success drivers of these website projects were suggested in light of the typical themes of design thinking (i.e., human centeredness, research based, context awareness, and collaboration). Some practical limitations were also found in adopting the design-thinking-driven web development process, such as limited research methods and tools, and insufficient prototyping and experimentation. Along with these limitations, it was also discovered that current digital design agencies still face the following challenges in adopting the design-thinking-driven web development process: building a long-term, playful partnership with clients; leveraging decision-makers' design thinking awareness; and coping with limited resources (design thinking practitioners, budgets, and schedules).
