Analysis of Trends in Research on Creativity of Preschool Children (유아 창의성에 관한 연구동향 분석)

  • For the purpose of this analysis of trends in research on creativity of preschool children, 98 volumes with articles on the creativity of preschool children were selected from 6 reliable Korean academic journals. Analysis was for year, content, research methods, research design, and subjects. Results showed that (1) the changes by year were that the number of qualitative researches increased from 4 articles in 1998 to 24 articles in 2006. (2) The greatest amount of research content concerned educational methods for the generation of creativity. (3) Most research methods were empirical studies. (4) The most used measurement scale was the Korean Comprehensive Creativity Test for Young Children (Jeon, 2000). (5) Most data analyses were by t-test.

  • Bridge design is a problem-solving process whose level of design quality strongly depends on how to relate design constraints with feasibile design objectives in conceptual design stage. This paper has focused on how to create bridge shapes using creativity toward better looking bridge appearances in conceptual design stage. The term creativity in this study does not refer to the creation of something from nothing but to the reorganization of existing concepts. Such creativity includes not only enlarging the number of structural forms which is established based on the relationship between form and statics but also combining bridge design with artistic components like an architectural style. Also, this study has investigated the usefulness of graphic statics as a structural analysis tool showing the analysis results visually to generate bridge forms in conceptual design stage. It is expected that the proposed way of generating bridge forms in this study to be used not only for practical purpose but also for educational purpose regarding the aesthetic bridge design serving as a new education paradigm.

The Spatial Characteristics of Playgrounds Supporting Children's Creativity (창의성 증진을 위한 국내놀이터 공간특성 및 개선방안 연구)

  • As the paradigm which emphasizes nurturing creative elites is introduced, more attention has been paid to children playing and their creativity. This change means that the importance of creativity is emphasized in the education of children, and furthermore, playgrounds which focus on creativity and imagination are needed. Therefore, this study examines the spatial characteristics of playgrounds for children and suggested strategies to improve them. There are five spatial characteristics of a creative playground: aesthetics, being eco-friendly, exploration, challenging and variable. Through the five characteristics, playgrounds were analysed based on ten expressive elements and the results are summarized: Creative playgrounds for children should have an attractive design with sculptural elements which stimulate children to be excited through associable shapes and abstract colors. Second, shelter type structures and a flexible flow design are needed so that children can feel free and be encouraged to explore in diverse ways. Third, as playgrounds for children provide spaces for rest in addition to play, organic facilities and eco-friendly materials for the rest space should to be used. Fourth, as childhood is a period when emotional, cognitive and physical development are achieved, organic geographical features and atypical facilities should be provided so that children can acquire extensive skills and join in physical activities. Finally, creative playgrounds for children should have mobile or variable facilities which consider the characteristics of children who want to do diverse activities and play different games. This study analysed playgrounds for children and suggested strategies to improve them. For successful design and use of creative playgrounds, it is suggested that intensive research on them and consultation with experts should be considered.

A Study on Using Method of Analogy for Creativity Enhancement(2) - Experimental Study Focused on the Design Task of Residential Space - (창의성 증진을 위한 유추의 활용방법 (2) - 주거공간 디자인 과제를 중심으로 한 실험연구 -)

  • The objective of this study is to find an educational method that is able to increase creativity using both left and right directed thinking with complementary cooperation. The premise of experimental study is that analogical inference is a great help to produce a creative design, and the design tasks of residential space are given to 20 students, voluntary participants in four experimental tests. The first test is conducted with fundamental conditions such as site or location, users and their design requirements. Other three tests make a clear distinction with three cases using verbal analogy from many keywords, using visual analogy from many images and using verbal visual analogy from keywords and visual images. Consequently, when students use both verbal and visual analogy in solving design tasks their creative ability qualitatively as well as quantitatively is higher than in using only verbal analogy or visual analogy. Further study will be progressed with the design tasks of residential space in order to have an effective verification by comparing students' design results classified into two groups. One is a control group that consists of sophomore students in a college and another is a comparison group that consists of sophomore students in an university.

  • In the present society where aesthetic designs would have product value, designs must be the ones that add flexible sensation as well as the energy of counteraction which escapes from and destroys existing concept. The 'creative expression' to reach such design objectives is one of the most important abilities which designers must possess and is an overall concept in problem solving of designing which participates in formative approach or image development as well as product concepts such as function or performance . In this research, the definition of creativity, environmental change of designing, conditions designers must possess followed by these things and creative design expressions researched in the past, etc are examined and by presenting design method for creative designing concept targeting mobile phones, it will attempt to contribute in the importance of creativity and improve creative value of designers.

  • The purpose of this study was to exanune the effects of learning training program on university students' creativity. In order to accomplish this purpJse of the study effectively, the following research hypotheses were posited: (Hypothesis 1) The treJltment group trained with the learning program will perform better in technic.al class. (Hypothesis 2) The treatment group trained with the learning program will show the higher degree of progress in diagram creativity than the pre-treatment group. The result of the study were summarized as follows: First, regarding the effects of training, there appeared a significant difference between the groups of post-treatment class and pre-treatment class in the use of learning strategies. Second. there appeared a significant difference between the group of post-treatment class and pre-treatment class in diagranl creativity.

The premise of experimental study is that analogical inference is a great help to make a creative design, and design tasks of commercial space, fashion shop and herb cafe are given to 25 students, voluntary participants in experimental tests. Tests make a clear distinction between a case using verbal analogy from many keywords and another case using verbal visual analogy from keywords and visual images. Consequently, when students use both verbal and visual analogy in solving design tasks their creative ability qualitatively as well as quantitatively is higher than in using verbal analogy. However, when students are classified with high and low sketching group verbal visual analogy is effective for students with high sketching ability to enhance both practicality and originality. Even students with low sketching ability can improve originality remarkably by using verbal visual analogy. In experiment there is time limit, a hour, but in actual studio class it is desirable that an educator guides the latter to make up for the weak points in practicality of their design taking time. Further study will be progressed with the design tasks of residential space to compare with the findings of this study.

Study on running practices of introductory design for engineering education (based on an example of Hanbat National University) (공학교육 입문설계의 운영사례 연구 (한밭대학교 중심으로))

  • In this paper, we surveyed from students and professors of Hanbat National University to examine the current state of running the introductory engineering design and to derive the direction of future improvements of the subject. A total of 783 students from nine departments and 12 professors who are in charge of the introductory engineering design participated in the present questionnaire evaluation. Outcome categories of the interest in their major and the learning of design theory appears relatively lower than other learning outcomes of the introductory engineering design course. Accordingly, it is determined that the theoretical aspects of designing should be emphasized in performing a team project. The design process, writing and presentation ability, teamwork theory are dealt in more than 70% of the departments, but engineering ethics, patent, visualization education had not been addressed in a number of departments due to their department characteristics. While a lesson outcome of the creativity resulted in the largest for the students, most of the professor feel difficult in increasing the creativity. It is urgent to develope of teaching methods in order to promote the creativity in the introductory engineering design course.

A Study of Standardization on the Examination for a Diagrammatic Creativity (도형적 창의력 검사지의 표준화에 관한 연구 - 디자인 전공 학생을 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide standardization on the examination that could measure students' diagrammatic creativity at design college. For this purpose, we tested college students, who was selected by educational system, regional, and grade groups to use the examination, and suggested the standardization criterion by analyzing these data. The data analysis procedures of this study consist of three step, the first that was to investigate the goodness of the examination paper, second step was to measure the reliability and the validity for the goodness of questions, the last step was to suggest the standardize scores for standardization on the examination. The results of the goodness and standardization analysis showed three structural factors(fluency, flexibility, originality) of this examination were proper to measure the diagrammatic creativity, and the proposed examination tool seemed to be good enough to apply in practice.
