  • Robust design is an approach to reducing performance variation of quality characteristic values in quality engineering. Taguchi has an idea that mean and variation are handled simultaneously to reduce the expected loss in products and processes. In the Taguchi parameter design, the product-array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined-array approach, was studied. In these studies, only single quality characteristic (or response) was considered. In this paper we propose how to simultaneously optimize for multiple quality characteristics (or multiresponse) using desirability function when we used the combined-array approach to assign control and noise factors.

  • This paper presents a conceptual approach to convert customer requirements expressed in ordinary language into a form of qualitative and quantitative functions for developing new products. This approach attempts to combine the concepts of the value engineering and the Kansei engineering. It emphasizes that customer require- ments should be interpreted and reflected on the design of new product. Specific are discussed for extracting subjective requirements and transforming them into qualitative and quantitative functions for product design. This approach is expected to provide the product designer with a systematic efficient tool for incorporating subjective requirements into a product design.

  • Although dapped-end beams are widely used in bridge and building structures, there are not any specific and reasonable design regulations on dapped-end beams. In this study, the validity of the suggested experimental and empirical design methods, conventional strut-tie model approach, and nonlinear strut-tie model approach is evaluated through the analysis of dapped-end beams tested to failure. The nonlinear strut-tie model approach proved to be the most suitable method for dapper-end beam design.

  • Design codes provide the minimum requirements for the design of code-compliant structures to ensure the safety of the life and property. As for code-exceeding buildings, the requirements for design are not sufficient and the approval of such structures is vague. In mainland China in recent years, a large number of code-exceeding tall buildings, whether their heights exceed the limit for the respective structure type or the extent of irregularity is violated, have been constructed. Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) approach has been highly recommended and become necessary to demonstrate the performance of code-exceeding tall buildings at least equivalent to code intent of safety. This paper proposes the general methodologies of performance-based seismic analysis and design of code-exceeding tall buildings in Mainland China. The PBSD approach proposed here includes selection of performance objectives, determination of design philosophy, establishment of design criteria for structural components and systems consistent with the desirable and transparent performance objectives, and seismic performance analysis and evaluation through extensive numerical analysis or further experimental study if necessary. The seismic analysis and design of 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center Tower is introduced as a typical engineering example where the PBSD approach is followed. The example demonstrates that the PBSD approach is an appropriate way to control efficiently the seismic damage on the structure and ensure the predictable and safe performance.

  • This study is written with a purpose to foresee the changes of way of life in the 21st century trough recognizing an environment based on a correct ecological world-view and to create environmental design of seeing the nature and humans as one organism. This study is focused especially in environmental design and written generally based on urban ecology human ecology cultural ecology and plant ecology with this multi-interdisciplanary approach,. To understand meaning of ecosytem by considering the theory of ecology for ecological approach of the environmental design and to grope for possibility of applying environmental design by considering what to analyze and how to differenciate concept for ecological environmental plan from the mechanical design. Through this study it was realized that the ecological design starts from the recognistion of seeing the humans and nature as a one and form being aware of signficance of all the living things in our surrounding environment.

  • Response-based approach is getting more preferred in determining the design sea-state for offshore structures because traditional environment-based approach is known to yield a much conservative design condition. This paper introduces the inverse first-order second-moment (IFOSM) method as a response-based approach, which is expected to give a more feasible design condition at the cost of reasonable number of motion analyses. The IFOSM method is based on the theory of probability and adopts an optimization scheme to determine the design point. Both the design maximum response and design sea state can be obtained straightforwardly from the optimum. The IFOSM method has been applied to a turret-moored FPSO's design problem and showed its effectiveness in practical use.

  • The object-oriented approach is a difficult method for engineers who are accustomed to other software development methods although it is an excellent software development approach. This paper presents a method for object-orineted modeling re-using DFD(Data Flow Diagram) and SC(Structure Chart) of structured analysis and design approach. This paper suggests an easy method for analysis and design using structured approach for object abstraction, which is one of the most difficult things in object-oriented approach.

  • A new approach to die shape optimal design in extrusion is presented. The approach consists of a FEM analysis model to predict the value of the objective function a design model to relate the die profile with the design variables and a genetic algorithm based optimaization procedure. The approach was described in detail with emphasis on our modified micro genetic algorithm. Comparison with theoretical solutions was made to examine the validity of the predicted optimal die shapes. The approach was then applied to revealing the optimal die shapes with regard to various objective functions including those for which the design sensitivities can not be deter-mined analytically.
