  • In this paper, a zinc electrowinning cell is fully optimized to achieve a uniform current distribution at electrode surfaces. To effectively deal with an electromagnetically coupled problem with multi-dimensional design variables, a sampling-based sensitivity approach is combined with a highly tuned multiphysics simulation model. The model involves the interrelation between electrochemical reactions and electromagnetic phenomena so as to predict accurate current distributions in the electrowinning cell. In the sampling-based sensitivity approach, Kriging-based surrogate models are generated in a local window, and accordingly their sensitivity values are extracted. Such unique design strategy facilitates optimizing very complicated multiphysics and multi-dimensional design problems. Finally, ten design variables deciding the electrolytic cell structure are optimized, and then the uniformity of current distribution in the optimized cell is examined through the comparison with existing cell designs.

  • The paper presents results of parametric studies, and an overall approach for the design of a modular bridge system which incorporates a steel-reinforcement free concrete slab cast on top of carbon FRP stiffened deck panels which act as both structural formwork and flexural reinforcement, spanning between hollow box type FRP girders. Results of the parametric studies are highlighted to elucidate important relationships between critical configurational parameters and empirical equations based on numerical studies are presented. Results are discussed at the level of the individual deck and girder components, and as a slab-on-girder bridge system. An overall design methodology for the components and bridge system including critical performance checks is also presented.

  • In this paper, we present an algorithmic technique for determining a feedback compensator which will stabilize the interval dynamic system, specifically, the robust regulator design for interval plants. The approach taken here is to allow the system parameters to live within prescribed intervals then design a dynamic feedback compensator which guarantees closed-loop system stable. The main contribution of this paper is the idea of introducing a "simplified Kharitonov's result" for low order polynomials to search for suitable compensator parameters in the compensator parameter space to make the uncertain syste robust. We also design the robust regulator which will D-stabilize (have the closed-loop poles in the left sector only) the dynamic interval system while having good performance. The nuerical examples are given to show the substantially improved robustness which results from our approach. approach.

  • This study investigates the direct displacement based design (DDBD) approach for different types of reinforced concrete structural systems including single moment-resisting, dual wall-frame and dual steel-braced systems. In this methodology, the displacement profile is calculated and the equivalent single degree of freedom system is then modeled considering the damping characteristics of each member. Having calculated the effective period and secant stiffness of the structure, the base shear is obtained, based on which the design process can be carried out. For each system three frames are designed using DDBD approach. The frames are then analyzed using nonlinear time-history analysis with 7 earthquake accelerograms and the damage index is investigated through lateral drift profile of the models. Results of the analyses and comparison of the nonlinear time-history analysis results indicate efficiency of the DDBD approach for different reinforced concrete structural systems.

  • In this paper we present a new method to control system design using a sliding mode. The objective of this research is to develop the algorithm for the sliding mode control which is able to remove the chattering phenomena and to reduce the reaching phase. To accomplish this approach we introduce switching dynamics instead of switching logics to obtain the sliding mode. Consequently, we can obtain the new design approach which is much simpler than the VSS theory. And there do not exist chattering phenomena in this method because the obtained control input are continuous. Simultaneously we can reduce the reaching phase by a suitable choice of design factor. Numerical examples are discussed as illustration.

  • This study is to suggest a probabilistic design determining configurations of slider air bearings with the dimensional manufacturing tolerances of the ABS. The probabilistic design problem is formulated to minimize the variation in flying height from a target value while satisfying the desired probabilities keeping the pitch and roll angles within suitable range. The proposed approach first solves the deterministic optimization problem. Then, beginning with this solution, the RBDO is continued with the probabilistic constraints affected by the random variables with a fixed standard deviation in normal distribution. The RBDO results are directly compared with the values of the initial design and the results of the deterministic optimization, respectively. The reliability analyses are performed by the descriptive sampling (DS) to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach. It is demonstrated that the proposed RBDO approach can efficiently obtain an optimum solution satisfying all the desired probabilistic constraints.

  • This research presents a multi-objective optimal design employing topological approach to maximize magnetic energy while minimizing structural deformation which is caused by magnetic reluctance force and magnetostriction. A design sensitivity formula is derived by employing the adjoint variable method (AVM) to avoid numerous sensitivity evaluations for a coupled magneto-mechanical analysis. The sensitivity analysis is verified using the finite difference method (FDM) in a C-shape actuator. A linear actuator used in a home appliance is examined for optimal design and demonstrates the strength of the proposed topology optimization approach.

  • We consider a minimax approach to make a design robust to many types or uncertainty arising in reality when dealing with non-normal linear models. We try to build a design to protect against the worst case, i.e. to improve the "efficiency" of the worst situation that can happen. In this paper, we especially deal with the generalized linear model. It is a known fact that the generalized linear model is a universal approach, an extension of the normal linear regression model to cover other distributions. Therefore, the optimal design for the generalized linear model has very similar properties as the normal linear model except that it has some special characteristics. Uncertainties regarding the unknown parameters, link function, and the model structure are discussed. We show that the suggested approach is proven to be highly efficient and useful in practice. In the meantime, a computer algorithm is discussed and a conclusion follows.
