In the present approach, the flame-acoustics interaction is represented by FDF (Flame Describing Function) which is a important source term in the Helmholtz' equation. In this study, the combustion instability is analyzed by the forced mode strategy with the measured FDF. Numerical results indicate that the present approach reasonably well predicts the essential features of the combustion instability characteristics in the lean premixed combustor under the gas-turbine like environment.

Though various techniques have been studied as a way of adjusting parameters of PID controllers, no perfect method of determining parameters is available to date. This paper proposes a new method for enhancing performance of PID controllers by using the characteristics of dual-input describing function (DIDF). In other words, if nonlinear elements with two inputs (DIDF) are connected in series to the plant, the critical point (-1+j0) for Nyquist stability theory can be moved to a position arbitrarily selected on the complex plane by determining necessary coefficients of the DIDF appropriately. This makes the application of the existing conventional PID parameter tuning methods a lot easier, and stability and robustness of the system are improved simultaneously due to the DIDF inserted.

It is clear that when the amplitude of grinding chatter increases enough the contact between grinding wheel and workpiece cannot be sustained and the loss of contact occurs during a period of grinding chatter. In this paper the behavior of nonlinear grinding chatter due to the loss of contact has been studied. A nonlinear grinding chatter loop is developed where the loss of contact is considered as a nonlinear element of asymmetrical gain. The analysis is carried out in the time domain by numerical simulation and also in the complex domain by use of describing function method. The results show that two typical patterns of nonlinear grinding chatter can originate from the nonlinearity. One is an irregular chatter frequency at starting stage decreases to the natural frequency of grinding structure while the chatter amplitude increases and decreases repeatedly. The other is a limit cycle chatter of which the amplitude and frequency converge to constant and remain. This nonlinear behavior of grinding chatter has been well analyzed by the describing function method and confirmed by the numerical simulation.

In this paper, we propose a digital controller design methodology for an LLC resonant converter which has been widely used due to the advantages of low switching loss and high efficiency. We establish a mathematical model of an LLC resonant converter using the extended describing function concept and propose a controller design method based on the Ziegler Nichols control parameter tuning criteria. The voltage controller of an LLC resonant converter is designed based on the derived small signal model and the performance of the controller is verified by MATLAB simulations. The validity and the control performance of the designed voltage controller for the LLC resonant converter is analyzed through some simulations for the case of load variations and circuit modeling errors.
A closed loop system with a linear plant and nonlinearity in the feedback connection is analyzed for its quasi-static orbital stability by a state-space approach. First a periodic orbit is assumed to exist in the loop which is determined by describing function method for the given nonlinearity. This is possible by selecting a proper nonlinearity and a rigorous justification of the describing function method.[1-3, 18, 20]. Then by introducing residual operator, a linear perturbed model can be formulated. Using various transformations like a modified eigenstructure decomposition, periodic-averaging, charge of variables and coordinate transformation, the stability of the periodic orbit, as a solution of harmonic balance, can be shown by investigating a simple scalar function and result of linear algebra. This is ...

Ladder Diagram(LD) is the most extensively used among Programmable Logic Controller(PLC) standard languages for the design of process control system with PLC. But LD has the disadvantages for data processing and maintenance. On the other hand, there is full support for describing sequences so that complete sequential behavior can be easily broken down using a concise graphical language called Sequential Function Chart(SFC). Inspite of those characteristics, SFC is not suitable for describing interlock logic. In this paper, we propose the method for implementing interlock logic by using conventional SFC compiler and verify the effectiveness by applying proposed scheme to the In-Line Spin Coater.Coater.

It is required to predict a limit cycle amplitude controlled by system's nonlinear behavior as well as an eigen-frequency and initial growth rate of instabilities under the linear motions, in order to fully understand combustion instabilities in a lean premixed gas turbine combustor. Special focus of the current work is placed on the limit cycle amplitude prediction using flame describing function(FDF) where the ratio of a heat release fluctuation to a given flow perturbation is expressed as a function of frequency and amplitude. In this study, the CFD modeling work based on RANS is carried out to obtain FDF, which makes that the nonlinear thermo-acoustic model is successfully developed for predicting the limit cycle amplitude of the combustion instability.

Though various techniques have been studied as a way of adjusting parameters of PID controllers, no perfect method of determining parameters is available to date. Especially the deign of PID controller for unstable processes with dead time(UPWDT) is even more difficult due to various reasons. Generally the existing design procedures for UPWDT involve deriving formulas to meet gain and phase margin specifications, or using inner loop to stabilize UPWDT before applying PID controller. In this paper, the dual-input describing function(DIDF) method is proposed, by which the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system can be improved. The method is based on moving the critical point (-1+j0) of Nyquist stability to a new position arbitrarily selected on the complex plane. This can be done by determining appropriate coefficients of the DIDF. As a result, we can easily determine parameters of PID-type controller by using existing conventional tuning methods for stable or unstable systems. Simulation results are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The frequency response characteristics of a condenser were numerically studied for the control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The important parameters, such as the refrigerant flow rate, refrigerant temperature, air velocity, and air temperature at the condenser inlet, were analyzed. Superheated vapor, two phase, and subcooled liquid domain in condenser can be described by using the energy balance equation and the mass balance equation in refrigerant and tube wall, the basic equation for describing the dynamic characteristics of condenser can be derived. The transfer function for describing dynamic response of the condenser to disturbances can be obtained from using linearizations and Laplace transformations of the equation. From this transfer function, analytical investigation which affects the frequency responses of condenser has been made. Block diagrams were made based on the analytic transfer function; dynamic responses were evaluated in Bode diagrams on the frequency response. Through this study, it became possible that the information about the dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser is offered. The results may be used for determining the optimum design parameters in actual components and entire systems. Also, the mathematical models, frequency response may be used to help understanding, evaluate optimum design parameters, design control systems and determine on setting the best controller for the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

The technique of dual-input describing function's synthesis is introduced and the construction of a nonlinear compensator, based on this technique, is proposed. A nonlinear compensator, describing a complex DIDF depending upon amplitude of the second sinusoidal input signal only, is also proposed, where the second sinusoidal input signal is supplied to the nonlinear compensator by external generator. This compensator, connected in a closed loop of the PI speed control of DC motor, can improve the speed response in view instability limit cycle, low speed response and disturbance of the dynamic shift of the Nyquist's critical point -1 + j O. It is verified theoretically that the improvement of speed response of DC motor using the proposed compensator is achieved by means of the dynamic shift of the Nyquist's critical point on the complex plane, and the speed characterstics of DC motor is to be tested through experiment for its performance.
