  • In this paper, the problem of a viewer's head tracking in a desktop-based interactive stereoscopic display system is considered. A fast and low-cost approach to the problem is important for such a computing environment. The system under consideration utilizes a shuttle glass for stereoscopic display. The proposed method makes use of an image taken from a single low-cost video camera. By using a simple feature extraction algorithm, the obtained points corresponding to the image of the user-worn shuttle glass are used to estimate the glass center, its local 'yaw' angle, as measured with respect to the glass center, and its global 'yaw' angle as measured with respect to the camera location. With these estimations, the stereoscopic image synthetic program utilizes those values to interactively adjust the two-view stereoscopic image pair as displayed on a computer screen. The adjustment is carried out such that the so-obtained stereoscopic picture, when viewed from a current user position, provides a close-to-real perspective and depth perception. However, because the algorithm and device used are designed for fast computation, the estimation is typically not precise enough to provide a flicker-free interactive viewing. An error concealment method is thus proposed to alleviate the problem. This concealment method should be sufficient for applications that do not require a high degree of visual realism and interaction.

  • The interaction of contained oil slicks with current was investigated with a two-dimensional experimental setup in the circulating water channel facility. A vertical plate was used to contain the oils against the currents and the evolution of the oil slick, mainly focusing on the water/oil interface, was examined with an aid of a laser sheet. Two different oils - soy bean oil and diesel oil - were studied with varying the current speed (10 cm/sec to 35 cm/sec), the barrier depth (4 cm and 8 cm) and the volume of oil (2 liter to 12 liter). Different types of the interface behavior were observed according to the conditions and their mechanism was discussed based basically on the dimensional analysis. The critical speeds of two types of oil loss mechanism (entrainment failure and drainage failure) were also examined.

  • In this paper, an analytical model to predict the resisting capacity of slender RC columns is introduced. Material and geometric nonlinearities are taken into account, and the layer approach is adopted to simulate the different material properties across the sectional depth. On the basis of the obtained numerical analysis results, an improved design equation as a function of concrete strength, slenderness ratio, steel ratio and eccentricity for slender RC columns, which can be used effectively in the preliminary design stage, is introduced. Finally, P-M interaction diagrams constructed by the introduced equation are compared with the ACI method with the objective of establishing the relative efficiencies of the introduced equation.

  • $SnO_2$ nanowires are used at the nanoscale level for the electrical transduction of the gas interaction with these sensing materials. We report on a study of high sensitivity and fast NOx gas sensor. We focused on improving the response time and refresh time by growth nanowires on the trench structure of Si substrate as air path. To improve refresh time we applied the trench structure with depth of $10\;{\mu}m$ by the inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching(ICP-RIE). The fabricated device was measured at temperature of $200{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. The sensor exhibit ultra-fast and reversible electrical response (t90% ~4 s for response and ~3 s for recovery).

  • We developed a novel depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography (PET) detector using wavelength shifting (WLS) fibers and optimized it. The optimization module was designed by using two scintillators and three WLS fibers and attaching a sensor to the end of the WLS fiber. Optimum combinations were obtained through the light collection efficiency and the light collection ratio between sensors depending on coupling materials and reflectors of scintillators, WLS fibers and sensors. The highest light collection efficiency and the light collection ratio between sensors were obtained in the combination of the epoxy (coupling materials)-diffuse reflector (scintillators)-specular reflector (WLS fibers).

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to verify psychosocial issues faced by psychiatric and community mental health nurse practitioners (PCMHNP) working in community mental health centers, and to identify the adaptation processes used to resolve the issues. Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews between December 2013 and August 2014. Participants were 11 PCMHNP working in community mental health centers. Analysis was done using the grounded theory methodology. The first question was "How did you start working at a community mental health center; what were the difficulties you faced during your employment and how did you resolve them?" Results: The core category was 'regulating within relationships.' The adaptation process was categorized into three sequential stages: 'nesting,' 'hanging around the nest,' and 'settling into the nest.' Various action/interaction strategies were employed in these stages. The adaptation results from using these strategies were 'psychiatric nursing within life' and 'a long way to go.' Conclusion: The results of this study are significant as they aid in understanding the psychosocial adaptation processes of PCMHNP working in community mental health centers, and indicate areas to be addressed in the future in order for PCMHNP to fulfill their professional role in the local community.
