  • In the first part of this paper, the influences of some of crack parameters on natural frequencies of a cracked cantilever Functionally Graded Beam (FGB) are studied. A cantilever beam is modeled using Finite Element Method (FEM) and its natural frequencies are obtained for different conditions of cracks. Then effect of variation of depth and location of cracks on natural frequencies of FGB with single and multiple cracks are investigated. In the second part, two Multi-Layer Feed Forward (MLFF) Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are designed for prediction of FGB's Cracks' location and depth. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Back-Error Propagation (BEP) algorithms are applied for training ANNs. The accuracy of two training methods' results are investigated.

  • In this paper, we investigate a real-time environment recognition system based on stereo vision for moving object. This system consists of stereo matching, obstacle detection and distance estimation. In stereo matching part, depth maps can be obtained real road images captured adjustable baseline stereo vision system using belief propagation(BP) algorithm. In detection part, various obstacles are detected using only depth map in case of both v-disparity and column detection method under the real road environment. Finally in estimation part, asymmetric parabola fitting with NCC method improves estimation of obstacle detection. This stereo vision system can be applied to many applications such as unmanned vehicle and robot.

  • The pressure field for the Pekeris model which is consisted of a surface layer of fresh water overlying a thick (essentially semi-infinite) bottom layer of coarse sand is investigated experimentally in a anechoic tank scaled down 1/1,000. The water depth and frequency have been controlled so that the continuous mode integrand has not a resonance close to cut-off, and the experimental results relatively well agree with the theory which is represented as the sum of the discrete modes over a range about 10 times the water depth.

  • The propagation of water waves over irregular bottom bathymetry and around islands involves many process-shoaling, refraction, energy dissipation and diffraction. Numerical model in this study is developed with the mild slope equation to investigate wave transformation in water of varying depth and combined waves and a current. The method used is splitting method and minimax approximation. The numerical method used in this study is Crank-Nicolson scheme in the FDM. This model is applied to Vincent shoal and compared with laboratory experimental data. The results agreed well with laboratory data. Current effect is considered in this study. • This study deals with the case of a fixed floating structure(FFS) at the mouth of a rectangular harbor under the action of waves represented by the linear wave theory. Modified forms of the mild-slope equation is applied to the propagation of regular wave over constant water depth. The model is extended to include bottom friction and boundary absorption. A hybrid element approximation is used for calculation of linear wave oscillation in and near coastal harbor. Modification of the model was necessary for the FFS. For the conditions tested, the results of laboratory experiments by Ippen and Goda(1963), and Lee (1969) are compared with the calculated one from this model. The cases of flat cylinderical structures, both fixed and floating, were taken to be in an intermediate water depth.

  • Harmonic vibration characteristics for the general rotor model having a breathing crack are analyzed. Analyses are performed at the half critical speed ranges. The vibration characteristics are explained by using the additional slope and bending moment at the crack position and the influence coefficient showing the structural dynamic characteristics of the rotor. With the low crack depth the magnitude of the additional slope is kept constant even at the speed range at which the orbit magnitude is very sensitive to the rotational speed change. At this speed range the vibration is affected by the influence coefficient only. As the dynamic bending moment exceeds the static bending moment with the increase of crack depth. the additional slope affects the vibration amplitude of cracked rotor and the crack propagation rate increases.

  • To investigate internal waves (IW) effect on acoustic wave propagation, m analysis is conducted on mode travel time and model simulation. Based on the thermistor string data, it can be shown that the thermocline depth variation may cause travel time difference as much as 4-10 ms between mode 1 and 2 over range 10 km. This travel time difference causes interference among modes and thus fluctuation from range-independent stratified ocean structure. In real situations, however, there exist additionally spatial variation of IW. Model simulation with all modes and simple IW shows clear responses of acoustic signals to IW, amplitude and phase fluctuation.

  • As nation's infrastructure is getting old, nondestructive evaluation of existing structures and construction quality control are getting important. In this thesis, flaw detection techniques of concrete members with asphalt using impact echo test were introduced. This techniques are based on stress wave propagation. In this field impact echo test, As load is gradually increased, frequency is increased. From this change of frequency through impact echo test, we can detect that the crack of bridge ascends and what the depth of crack is.
