The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing hope in female high school students. The participants were 207 female high school students who were selected from 2 schools located at Province J. The data was collected from September, 2 to 24 in 2009, by self report questionnaires. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression, with the SPSS /WIN 13.0 program. Hope in female high school students differed by economic state and school record. Hope in female high school students positively correlated to task difficulty preference, self-regulatory efficacy, self-confidence, teacher support and peer support. Self-regulatory efficacy, peer support and self-confidence accounted for 34.7% of hope in female high school students. This study showed that self-regulatory efficacy, peer support and self-confidence should be considered in developing a practical nursing intervention program to increase hope in female high school students.

Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to identify and compare professional socialization in student nurses and nurses. Method: The participants were 70 student nurses in the first semester of their senior year, 27 new nurses, and 28 experienced nurses. Professional socialization was measured using the instrument developed by Du Toit(1995). Results: There was a significant difference in scores for total professional socialization among the 3 groups (F=3.650, p=.029) and the score for senior students was higher than that of new nurses. Of the 52 items, there were 10 items which had high scores (over 4) including 'Nurses should act in a professional manner'. 3 items which had low scores (under 3) including 'Nurses are innovative'. Nine items including 'Medical profession recognizes nursing as an autonomous profession' showed significant differences among the 3 groups. Conclusion: The findings suggest that socialization in the professional view of the job and professional role is needed in not only schools but also the clinical fields.

The total of 234 subjects returned the questionnaire with 95% of response rates. The subjects of the study constituted of 195 nursing graduates and 39 clinical nurses. Self report questionnaires were used to measure the clinical competence of nursing graduates and clinical nurses. This instrument had four dimensions of competency : client and health need, nursing process, professional role, and nursing interventions. The data were analyzed by utilizing SPSSWIN and the results were as follows. 1) The mean score of the nursing intervention dimension was the most with 3.82 compared to professional role dimension(3.06), nursing process(3.03), client and health need dimension(2.94) in nursing graduates. 2) The mean score of the nursing intervention dimension was the most with 3.04 compared to client and health need dimension(2.82), professional role dimension(2.81), nursing process(2.77) in clinical nurses. And all of these dimensions' scores were lower than the nursing graduates' scores. 3) The mean scores of nursing process (t=3.76, p<.001) and professional role dimensions(t=3.53, p<.001) in nursing graduates were significantly higher than clinical nurses' scores. Our suggestions based on the results of this study is : 1. It is recommended to repeat the same designed study in large sample of clinical nurses for further study.

Purpose: This study was a comparative review of the computerized nursing records and paper-based nursing records to examine effects of a nursing process documentation system focusing on patients who have had stroke. Method: First, the researchers collected all the foci from the computerized records and the paper-based records. They selected ten nursing foci, used frequently in both groups and analyzed the number of foci per patient, appropriateness of foci, the number of nursing activities per nursing focus and whether outcomes were described or not in the nursing record. Results: There was fewer errors in nursing diagnosis selection, and a larger number of activities in the records than trle paper based ones. Also, there was a better description of the nursing outcomes in the computerized records. Conclusion: This study suggests that the computerized nursing records is significantly effective in increasing accuracy of the nursing care plan and quality of the nursing record.

Purpose: This study was to compare the influencing factors of clinical competence between associate and bachelor nursing students completing nursing courses. Method: The subjects were 429 students completing the nursing courses (172 bachelor course students, and 257 associate course students). The study design was cross sectional. Results: Bachelor students showed a significant higher score in clinical competence than associate students. There were significant influencing factors on clinical competence including critical thinking disposition, professional conduct, communication skill, theoretical education satisfaction, and practice education satisfaction. The strongest factor influencing clinical competence was critical thinking disposition. All the factors mentioned above explained 49% of clinical competence in associate courses, and 40.0% in bachelor courses excluding the factor of practice education satisfaction. The level of theoretical and practice education satisfaction of bachelor courses was significantly lower than associate. Conclusion: It is recommended that associate course nursing students should be encouraged in critical thinking disposition, professional conduct, and communication skill. Bachelor course nursing students should be encouraged in practical education including practical environments, instruction methods, and content for improving clinical competence.

Purpose: A cost analysis for nursing services in operative nursing unit, emergency nursing unit, and ambulatory nursing unit was performed using patient classification system by nursing intensity in order to determine an appropriate nursing fee schedule. Method: The data were collected from 4 secondary hospitals and 5 tertiary hospitals from November 14th 2000 to January 15th 2001. The study was conducted through four phases as follows: 1) Nursing hours of each nursing service in special nursing units were measured using three kinds of patient classification systems by nursing intensity. 2) The nursing cost of nursing services in operative nursing unit, emergency nursing unit, and ambulatory nursing units was estimated based on patient classification system by nursing intensity. Results: As a result, nursing hours by nursing intensity of each special nursing unit were measured, and every nursing cost by nursing intensity in operation room and emergency room was estimated, meanwhile, the cost of nursing services in ambulatory care units was estimated only per visit as shown in chapter 4. Conclusion: Future research on nursing cost should be extended to other special nursing units such as various intensive nursing care units, delivery room, and so on. In addition, the patient classification system should be refined for its appropriateness to apply all levels of medical institutions.

Purpose: To develop staffing levels for nursing personnel (registered nurses and nursing assistants) to provide inpatients with integrated nursing care that includes, in addition to professional nursing care, personal care previously provided by patients' families or private caregivers. Methods: A time & motion study was conducted to observe nursing care activities and the time spent by nursing personnel, families, and private caregivers in 10 medical-surgical units. The Korean Patient Classification System-1 (KPCS-1) was used for the nurse manager survey conducted to measure staffing levels and patient needs for nursing care. Results: Current nurse to patient ratios from the time-motion study and the survey study were 1:10 and 1:11, respectively. Time spent in direct patient care by nursing personnel and family/private caregivers was 51 and 130 minutes per day, respectively. Direct nursing care hours correlated with KPCS-1 scores. Nursing personnel to patient ratio required to provide integrated inpatient care ranged from 1:3.9 to 1:6.1 in tertiary hospitals and from 1:4.4 to 1:6.0 in general hospitals. The functional nursing care delivery system had been implemented in 38.5% of the nursing units. Conclusion: Findings indicate that appropriate nurse staffing and efficient nursing care delivery systems are required to provide integrated inpatient nursing care.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that affect nursing students' perception of pediatric safety nursing activities for children during hospitalization. Methods: The study sample included 304 nursing students who had participated in pediatric nursing practice. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.3 program. Results: Regression analysis showed that the model's explanatory power was 37%. Safety policy and procedure, safety priority, disaster experience, and knowing a place of refuge were factors affecting the perception of safety nursing activities for children during hospitalization. Conclusion: Findings show that safety policy and procedures and safety priority are major factors that affect the perception of safety nursing activities and indicate that effective education programs on safety policy and procedure and safety priority are necessary to improve the perception of safety nursing activities.
