The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acid treatment of fluoride applied dentin surface with various concentrations of phosphoric acid for various periods of time on dentin bonding. Dentin specimens prepared from freshly extracted bovine mandibular anterior teeth were divided into fluoridated and nonfluoridated groups. Specimens of nonfluoridated group were pretreated with 10% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. Those of fluoridated groups were treated with 2% sodium fluoride or 2% stannous fluoride solution for 5 minutes and stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 3 days, followed by phosphoric acid treatment. The concentrations of phosphoric acid were 10%, 32% or 50% and the treatment periods of time were 15, 30 or 60 seconds. All the specimens were bonded with All Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 and Bisfil$^{TM}$ composite resin. After bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, tensile bond strengths of each specimens were measured and the pretreated dentin and the fractured dentin surfaces were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : The tensile bond strengths from the fluoridated groups were significantly lower than those from the nonfluoridated group when the concentrations of phosphoric acid and the treatment periods of time were equal in all the groups (p<0.05). In general, the higher the concentration of phosphoric acid and the longer the treatment period of time for acid etching on the fluoride applied dentin surface, the higher were the bond strength values. Recovery of bond strength of the dentin bonding agent was better in the NaF applied group than in the $SnF_2$ applied one. SEM findings of NaF applied and $SnF_2$ applied dentin surfaces demonstrated reaction product-covered and partially or completely obstructed dentinal tubules. SEM findings of dentin surfaces fluoridated for 5 minutes followed by etching showed wider tubular openings and more clean dentin surfaces when dentin was etched with higher concentration of phosphoric acid for longer period of time. On the SEM observations of the fractured dentin-resin interface, the etched specimens of fluoridated group showed an adhesive failure mode when the concentration of phosphoric acid and the treatment period of time were same as in the nonfluoridated group. As the concentration of phosphoric acid and the treatment period of time increase during acid etching, the cohesive failure area increased. However, excessive acid etching caused adhesive failure.
The purpose of this study was to evlauate the microleakage of 3 dentin bonding agents using different dentin pretreatment method under simulated physilogic pressure in cementing the porcelain laminate veneer. Noncarious 60 human maxillary molars were selected and randomly assigned to 4 groups of 15 each. The group with the margin placed on the enamel was classified as the control and the groups with the margin placed on root surface were subdivided into 3 groups according to the dentin bonding agents used. The group using All Bond 2 was classified as experimental group 1, the group using Scotchbond MP was classified as experimental group 2, and the group using Gluma was classified as experimental group 3. Roots were removed at 3mm below the cementoenamel junction, and reductions of the teeth for the porcelain laminate veneer were done on the mesial 1/2 of the buccal surface of each teeth. The pulp was extirpated and the pulp chamber was cleaned with 37% phosphoric acid for the patency of dentinal tubule. Under simulated physiologic pressure, porcelain laminate veneers were cemented to the teeth using each dentin bonding agent and luting cement. After cementation, all samples were stored at 36t in water for 24 hours and thermocycled for 1500 cycles, then immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin solution and the teeth were sectioned longitudinally by using diamond saw and the extent of microleakage was measured. The following results were obtained, 1. Microleakage was observed in a few samples of control group but all the samples of experimental groups. 2. The control group showed the less extent of microleakage than the experimental groups. In experimental groups the experimental group 1 & the experimental group 2 showed similiar extent of microleakage and the experimental group 3 showed the greater extent of microleakage than other groups. Conclusively, practicing the porcelain laminate veneers in the clinic, although the margin of the porcelain laminate veneer should be placed on enamel, in the case that it is inevitable to place the margin of the porcelain laminate veneer on the root surface, it is recommened to use dentin bonding agents which use no dentin pretreatment or a dentin pretreatment which can leave the smear plugs.

This study compared the dentin shear bond strengths of currently used dentin bonding agents that were irradiated with an LED (Elipar FreeLight, 3M-ESPE) and a halogen light (VIP, BISCO). The optical characteristics of two light curing units were evaluated. Extracted human third molars were prepared to expose the occlusal dentin and the bonding procedures were performed under the irradiation with each light curing unit. The dentin bonding agents used in this study were Scotchbond Multipurpose (3M ESPE), Single Bond (3M ESPE), One-Step (Bisco), Clearfil SE bond (Kuraray), and Adper Prompt (3M ESPE), The shear test was performed by employing the design of a chisel-on-iris supported with a Teflon wall. The fractured dentin surface was observed with SEM to determine the failure mode. The spectral appearance of the LED light curing unit was different from that of the halogen light curing unit in terms of maximum peak and distribution. The LED LCU (maximum peak in 465 nm) shows a narrower spectral distribution than the halogen LCU (maximum peak in 487 nm). With the exception of the Clearfil SE bond (P < 0.05), each 4 dentin bonding agents showed no significant difference between the halogen light-cured group and the LED light-cured group in the mean shear bond strength (P > 0.05). The results can be explained by the strong correlation between the absorption spectrum of camphoroquinone and the narrow emission spectrum of LED.

Dentin bonding system have recently been developed in an effort to simplify and shorten bonding procedure. The intent of this study was to evaluate microleakage of newer generation of dentin bonding system comparing with other generations. Forty extracted human premolar teeth were randomly assigned to four groups for bonding : the 4th generation bonding system (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose). the 5th generation bonding system (Clearfil SE Bond), 6th generation bonding system (AQ bond) and 7th generation bonding $system(i-bond)^{TM}$ Class V cavities were prepared in buccal and lingual surface. The cavities were restored with composite resin (Z100) after the application of dentin bonding systems according to the instructions of the manufacturer Samples were thermocycled and immersed in methylene blue dye(2%). Each sample was sectioned with Isomet and evaluated for microleakage using stereomicroscopy. The mean value of the microleakage in 7th generation bonding system was greater than those of 4, 5, 6th generation dentin bonding system. Statistically, the mean values of microleakage between 4th and 7th generation bonding system were significantly different from each other (p<0.05).
Statement of problem : Limited research on flowable resin has been undertaken on its application directly on dentin associated with the adhesive systems. Purpose : This study was to evaluate the shear bond strengh and fracture aspect of flowable resin on human dentin with various types of dentin bonding adhesives with thermo cycling effect. Materials and methods: Filtek-Flow(3M ESPE, USA) was used as flowable resin and Eighty human molars were randomly divided into 4 groups : three dentin bonding adhesives (Scotchbond-Multipurpose : 3-step contentional system, One-Step : One-bottle system. Prompt L-Pop : All-in-one, self-etching primer) and 32% etching treatment without bonding adhesive as a control group. For evaluating their durability of bonding, each group was subdivided : storaging in the water at 37$^{\circ}C$(24 hours) and thermocycling (0$^{\circ}C$-55$^{\circ}C$, 30 seconds intervals, 1000 cycle). Shear bond strength tests were performed and resin-dentin interface and fracture mode were observed. Results were analysed by one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple range test. Results and Conclusion : 1. At 0 cycle, the mean shear bond strength of One-Step exhibited the highest value of all groups(p<0.05), and there were no significant differences between Prompt L-Pop and Scotchbond-Multipurpose, Scotchbond-Multipurpose and control(p>0.05). After 1000 thermocycling, One-Step exhibited higher value than other groups(p<0.05), and there were no significant differences among other groups (p>0.05). 2. The shear bond strength of each group was significantly decreased after thermocycling except Scotchbond-Multipurpose (p>0.05). 3. The most common failure mode was adhesive type and mixed type, next in order.

It is well known that glass-ionomer cement and compomer can release fluoride which can inhibit the progression of dental caries. The purposes of this study were to evaluate whether the fluoride from fluoride-containing filling materials can penetrate the dentin bonding adhesive and the dentin bonding adhesive can increase the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer. The amount of fluoride release from resin-modified glass ionomer and compomer was measured during 28 days of period and statistically analyzed by t-test. The bond strength of each material with/without dentin bonding adhesive was measured and also statistically analyzed by t-test. The distribution of fluoride from each material into the tooth was explored by electron probe microanalysis system(EPMA). The experimental teeth used were second primary molars about to exfoliate. The amount of fluoride release from each material was diminished by dentin bonding adhesive during 28 days(p<0.05) and the bond strength was not increased by dentin adhesive in resin-modified glass ionomer. The bond strength of group VI was not detectable. The distribution of fluoride from each material into teeth was according to dentino-enamel junction and dispersed into pulp from pulpal floor. The widest distribution was shown in resin-modified glass ionomer cement filled without the application of dentin bonding adhesive.
Statement of problem. Adhesives in dentistry playa major role in the success of restorative treatments. In the treatment of all ceramic restoration it is needed to find the adequate bond strength between enamel and dentin. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear bond strength of resin cement bonded to extracted human uncut enamel, cut enamel, and dentin in vitro. Material and methods. Ten freshly extracted anterior teeth without any previous restorative treatments were chosen. The extracted teeth were embedded in PMMA cold acrylic in the shape of a cylinder, 25 mm in diameter by 25 mm in height. The bonding system used was as follow: Uni-Etch (32% phosphoric acid), One-Step adhesive, Duolink resin cement. The specimens were acid etched and rinsed with water. Two layers of One-Step adhesive were coated with a disposable brush on the uncut enamel. VIP curing light at $500mV/cm^2$ was used to cure the adhesive. For cut enamel shear bond test, the specimen used for uncut enamel was further reduced approximately $0.3{\sim}0.5mm$ using a laminate preparation diamond bur (0.3 mm in depth). The specimens were subsequently treated with 320-grit SiC paper followed by 600-grit SiC paper and cleaned with distilled water. The bonding procedure on the cut enamel was same as uncut enamel bonding procedure. For dentin bonding test, the specimen used for cut enamel was further reduced approximately $0.5mm{\sim}1.0mm$ using a laminate preparation diamond bur (0.5 mm in depth of diamond cutting). The amount of reduction was evaluated with the silicone mold. The specimens were subsequently treated with 320-grit SiC paper followed by 600-grit silicon carbon paper and cleaned in distilled water. The bonding procedure on the dentin was same as uncut enamel bonding procedure. All samples were mounted and secured on the Ultradent shear bond test sample holder, and Ultradent restricted shear bond testing device was used with Universal Instron machine until fracture. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was performed comparing the result at P<0.05. Multiple comparison (Tukey) was used to compare each groups. Result. The result showed that the mean value in shear bond strength of resin cement bonded to uncut enamel, cut enamel and dentin were 27.04 Mpa, 30.25 Mpa and 26.39 Mpa with respect. Conclusion. Within the limitation of this study, the mean value of the shear bond strength of cut enamel was higher than those of uncut enamel or dentin. However there existed no statistical differences between three different human dentition substrates due to increased adhesive characteristics.
The research of the dentin bonding system was mainly on the chemistry and bonding strength. And in vitro assessement of biocompatibility of dentin bonding system was not completely developed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of several dentin primers. Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (3M Dental Products. USA). Gluma (BayerDental. Germany). All-Bond (Bisco. USA). ProBond (CaulkDensply, USA) and VeridonFil (Dongyang Nylon. Korea) were included. Cytotoxicity was tested using MTT cell viability test. 0.5 ul. 1 ul. 2 ul and 10 ul of each primer were added to the 96 well plate of incubated L929 cell lines. After 30-minute. 1. 4. 24 and 72-hour exposures. absorbance of L929 cells was observed with ELISA reader. All data were analyzed using t-test. All primers showed cytotoxicity on L929 cells under every conditions used in this study. Absorbance of L929 cells was decreased by time. Scotch bond group exhibited the lowest absorbance value in all exposure time and value.
Purpose: The effects of desensitizing agent are often for a short duration. One of the reasons is believed to be wear of desensitizing agent by tooth brushing. To reduce the wear and make the duration longer, dental bonding resin was applied and the changes of dentin permeability after toothbrushing were measured. Materials and methods: Extracted teeth free from caries were chosen. Coronal dentin discs with thickness of 1 mm were prepared. Using the split chamber device developed by Pashely, hydraulic conductance and scanning electron microscope images (SEM) were compared and contrasted before and immediately after the application of desensitizing agent and bonding resin and then after equivalent tooth brushing of 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks. Four commercially available desensitizing agents were used in this study; they were All-Bond 2, Seal & Protect, Gluma, and MS Coat. And Dentin/Enamel Bonding resin (Bisco Inc.) was used. The results of this study are as follows. Results: On all specimens, the hydraulic conductance decreased after the application of tooth desensitizing agent and bonding resin. Compared with the specimens treated only with desensitizer, the specimens treated with All-Bond 2, Gluma, MS Coat and plus D/E bonding resin had a little increase in hydraulic conductance after 1, 2 and 6-week tooth brushing. In case of Seal & Protect, the specimens showed the same result only after 6-week tooth brushing. On examination of SEM, the dentinal tubule diameter had decreased after treatment of desensitizing agents and bonding resin. And the specimens treated with All-Bond2, Seal&Protect, Gluma, MS Coat and plus D/E bonding resin had an significant decrease in diameter of dentinal tubule after 6-week tooth brushing. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it is effective to use bonding resin after application of desensitizer in reducing the wear by tooth brushing and making the duration longer. In this study, just 6-week tooth brushing was performed, and it is not enough to regard it as a long-term data. So further study is needed and more perfect method for treating dentin hypersensitivity should be developed.
