  • The most stable adsorption structures and energies of four tautomers of 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (keto-1, enol-1, keto-2, and enol-2) on Ge(100) surfaces were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The enol-1, keto-2, and enol-2 tautomers, but not the keto-1 tautomer, were found to exhibit stable adsorption structures on the Ge(100)-$2{\times}1$ surface. Of these three adsorption structures, that of enol-2 is the most stable.

  • The effect of copper oxide on migration and interaction of protons in barium zirconate was investigated using density functional theory. One copper atom was substituted for a zirconium atom site, and a proton was added to a $3{\times}3{\times}3$ barium zirconate superstructure. An energy barrier of 0.89 eV for proton migration was the highest among several energy barriers. To investigate the interaction between multiple protons and a copper atom, two protons were added to the superstructure. Various proton positions were determined by the interaction between the two protons and the copper atom.

  • We utilize first-principles calculations within density-functional theory to investigate the possibility of strain engineering in the tuning of the band structure of two-dimensional $MoS_2$. We find that the band structure of $MoS_2$ monolayers transits from direct to indirect when mechanical strain is applied. In addition, we discuss the change in the band gap energy and the critical stains for the direct-to-indirect transition under various strains such as uniaxial, biaxial, and pure shear. Biaxial strain causes a larger change, and the pure shear stain causes a small change in the electronic band structure of the $MoS_2$ monolayer. We observe that the change in the interaction between molecular orbitals due to the mechanical strain alters the band gap type and energy.

  • We have studied the bonding structures of five membered aromatic ring heterocyclic molecules, such as furan, thiophene, and selenophene, adsorbed on the Si(100) surface at room temperature with density functional theory. Additionally, we have investigated the evolution upon annealing of thiophene and selenophene molecules on the Si(100) surface by the core-level photoemission spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). The core-level-spectra measured at different temperatures are consistently interpreted in terms of various adsorption structures suggested by theoretical calculations. In this study, we found the most suitable structures by theoretical and experimental results considering room temperature and mild thermal annealing.

  • The most stable adsorption structures and energies of four tautomerized forms (keto-1, enol-1, keto-2, and enol-2) of 3-methyl 5-pyrazolone (MP) adsorbed on Ge(100) surfaces have been investigated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation method. Among its four tautomerized forms, we confirmed three tautomerized forms except keto-1 form show the stable adsorption structures when they adsorbed on the Ge(100)-$2{\times}1$ surface as we calculate the respective stable adsorption structures, activation barrier, transition state energy, and reaction pathways. Moreover, among three possible adsorption structures, we acquired that enol-2 form has most stable adsorption structure with O-H dissociated N-H dissociation bonding structure.

  • The bonding configuration and adsorption stability of alanine and leucine adsorbed on Ge(100)-2${\times}$1 surface were investigated and compared using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The bonding configuration, stability, and adsorption energies were evaluated for two different coverage levels. In both cases, the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core-level spectra at a low coverage (0.30 ML) indicated that the carboxyl and amine groups participated in bonding with the Ge(100) surface in an "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure". At high coverage levels (0.60 ML), both this structure and an "O-H dissociation bonded structure" were present. As a result, we found that alanine adsorbs more easily (lower adsorption energy) than leucine on Ge(100) surfaces due to less steric hindrance of side chain.

  • The reaction of dilithio-o-carborane with dipenyl disulfide produces a phenyl thiolated o-carborane and it has been confirmed that there is conformational similarity between the structure of the compound elucidated by X-ray crystallography and that calculated by ab initio and density functional theory.

  • Adsorption of alkali metals (Li, Na, and K) on the surface of magnesium oxide nanotubes (MgONTs) with different diameters was investigated using density functional theory. According to the obtained results, the most stable adsorption site was found to be atop the oxygen atom of the tube surface with adsorption energies in the range of -0.25 to -0.74 eV. HOMO-LUMO gap ($E_g$) of the tubes dramatically decreases upon the adsorption of the alkali metals, resulting in enhancement of their electrical conductivity enhancement. The order of $E_g$ decrement caused by the metal adsorption is as follows: K > Na > Li. The results suggest that the MgONTs were transformed from semi-insulator to semiconductor upon the alkali metal adsorption. Increasing the tube diameter, the HOMO/LUMO gap of the pristine tube is enhanced and adsorption energies of the alkali metals are decreased.

  • We have studied the structures and stabilities of Au6 to explore the origin of the large discrepancy between relative energies obtained from the density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio correlated levels of theory. The MP2 methods significantly overestimate the stability of the non-planar isomer when the double-$\zeta$ polarization quality of basis sets, such as LANL2DZ+1f and CEP31G+1f, are used. However, we show that such preference for the non-planar structure at the MP2 level mainly originates from the large basis set superposition error.

  • The effect of additives in an electrolyte solution on the conversion efficiency of a dye sensitized solar cell was investigated. A density functional theory (DFT) method was used to examine the physical and chemical properties of nitrogen-containing additives adsorbed on a $TiO_2$ surface. Our results show that additives which cause lower partial charges, higher Fermi level shifts, and greater adsorption energies tend to improve the performance of DSSCs. Steric effects that prevent energy losses due to electron recombination were also found to have a positive effect on the conversion efficiency. In this work, 3-amino-5-methylthio-1H-1,2,4-triazole (AMT) has been suggested as a better additive than the most popular additive, TBP, and verified with experiments.
