  • The first part of this thesis discusses the Pearson's Curve Family which gives $\beta$distribution, $\Gamma$-distribution, $X^2$-distribution and t-distribution. The second part of this thesis gives some brief process of calculations for normal distribution density and t-distribution density by the 7-th type Curve of Pearson's Curve Family. Finally, a conclusion arrives that Student(Gosset) could not find out his famous 'Student's t-distribution' without his attending of 'Pearson's Differential Equation' class taught by Pearson himself when he was a senior student. However, if he had got a professorship at the Pearson Statistics Laboratory, the University of London, then he could not have found 'Student's t-distribution' for small sampling technique of modern statistics.

  • This study compares the inverse transform and the composition methods for generating data from the Lindley distribution. The expression for the inverse of the distribution function for the Lindley distribution does not exist in closed form. Hence, authors of many empirical studies on the Lindley distribution used methods for generating Lindley variates other than the inverse transform. We generated data from the Lindley distribution using the inverse transform approach by obtaining the Lindley variates numerically; we also generated data from this distribution using the composition approach. Following the generation of the Lindley variates using these two methods, we compare some statistical properties of the estimates of the Lindley model parameters based on the generated data. We conclude that the two methods produce similar results.

  • In this paper, we derived estimators of reliability P(Y < X) and the distribution of ratio in the bivariate exponential density. We also considered the means and variances of M = max{X,Y} and m = min{X,Y}. We finally presented how E(M), E(m), Var(M) and Var(m) are varied with respect to the ones in the bivariate exponential density.

  • In this paper, we consider estimators and a condence interval for a reliability in two independent right truncated Rayleigh distributions and consider the density of a ratio in two independent right truncated Rayleigh distributions. And we obtain the density of an estimator for a changing point in the density of a ratio in two independent right truncated Rayleigh distributions.

  • A simulation-based approach to estimating the probability of an arbitrary region under a multivariate normal distribution is developed. In specific, the probability is expressed as the ratio of the unrestricted and the restricted multivariate normal density functions, where the restriction is given by the region whose probability is of interest. The density function of the restricted distribution is then estimated by using a sample generated from the Gibbs sampling algorithm.

  • Surface density distributions for globular clusters were obtained from photoelectric surface photometry (using centered aperture photometry). These surface brightness profiles were then compared with the theoretical surface density distribution of King's model. From the comparison of the theoretical and observed surface density distributions, we determine he structural parameters of the clusters (the core radius $r_c$, the tidal cut off $r_t$, and the concentration factor C).

  • In this paper, we introduce the optimal approximation by a Gaussian function for a probability density function. We show that the approximation can be obtained by solving a non-linear system of parameters of Gaussian function. Then, to understand the non-normality of the empirical distributions observed in financial markets, we consider the nearly Gaussian function that consists of an optimally approximated Gaussian function and a small periodically oscillating density function. We show that, depending on the parameters of the oscillation, the nearly Gaussian functions can have fairly thick heavy tails.

  • The abnormal behavior of the argon metastable density during the E-H mode transition in argon ICP discharge was investigated. Lots of investigations including global models expected that during and after the mode transition of ICP discharge, the density of metastable increases with applied rf power (i.e. electron density). However, recent direct measurement of metastable density revealed that the metastable density of argon decreases with the applied power during and after the mode transition. This result may not be explained by the previous global model which is based on the assumption of the Maxwellian electron energy distribution function (EEDF). In this paper, to explain this abnormal behavior with simple manners, a simple global model taking account of the effect of the non-Maxwellian EEDFs incorporating into a set of coupled rate equations is proposed. The result showed that the calculated metastable density taking account of non-Maxwellian EEDF and its evolution during the transition has an abnormal behavior with electron density and is in good agreement with the previous measurement results, indicating the close coupling of electron kinetics and the behavior of metastable density. The proposed simple model is expected to provide qualitative kinetic insight to understand the behavior of the metastable density in various plasma discharges which typically exhibit non-Maxwellian distribution.

  • To facilitate a drilling plan for grouting in fractured rock, an algorithm of practical use associated with a new term “fracture density distribution”or“fracture tomogram”is developed. It is well known that Televiewer data(amplitude and traveltime image) provide detailed information about not only dip and dip direction of each fracture but also its aperture size estimated by an appropriate evaluation algorithm. A selected plane section of medium around a borehole or the cross section between two boreholes is discretized into a two dimensional grid of cells(rectangular elements). As each elongated(straight) fracture passes through the cells, the corresponding aperture size value is successively summed up in each cell, depending on the fracture length segment. In this, the fracture lines can be determined by intersecting of each fracture plane with the selected plane section. If the fracture line does not pass through a particular grid element, the segment length is set to zero. The final value(aperture size value of each cell) derived from all the detected fractures constitutes the fracture density distribution of the selected plane section, Field examples are illustrated, which will prove the benefit of the suggested algorithm for several kinds of grouting works.
