Demilitarization involves the disposal and recovery of obsolete explosives or ammunition. Cyclotol has been used as a military explosive along with RDX and HMX. A limited number of processes exist for safe disposal due to their sensitivity to thermal shock. Rotary kilns are widely used for thermal decomposition in many countries due to cost effectiveness and simplicity compared with supercritical oxidation. Phase change as well as condensed phase reactions(CPRs) and gas phase reactions(GPRs) with rates described by the Arrhenius equation of cyclotol has been considered in this work. Changes in gas fraction, reaction rate and mass of explosives were predicted at 490, 505 and 575 K. A maximum temperature of 2062 K has been predicted within the reactor at an initial temperature of 575 K due to GPRs. From this research, Thermal decomposition in the rotary kiln is plausible for demilitarization.

The expiration date of high energetic materials(HEM), such as HMX, RDX, TNT, is important. If the expiration date is violated, the expected specification of HEM would not be satisfied which may cause a different conclusion in an urgent situation. As a result, this HEM should maintain fresh conditions which cause the accumulation of waste HEM. If HEM is landfilled during demilitarization, the impact on living organizations is serious. Additionally, landfilling HEM has a possibility of explosion. In this research, the process flow diagram of the demilitarization gas treatment process was simulated while satisfying the law of the environment in Korea. After validation of simulation, it was optimized thermodynamically using Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis(HENs). This study is expected to enhance the energy efficiency of the original facility by suggesting developed designs. This research was supported by Agency of Defense Development NE32 Korea. Various types of solid rocket motors which manufactured by each aim have their own shelf life. So they must be done away if not used. And inferior goods during manufacturing must be done away too. In the past, out burning and out detonation is usual but now, environmental pollution should be concerned so that there are related technologies and commercial plants in other countries already from 1970's. Hence in this paper, we will talk about foreign state and domestic development of solid rocket motor demilitarization using wash out.

Ammunition Demilitarization facility (ADF) should be set up the feasible goals and continue to operate, taking into account non-profit characteristics. However, due to the lack of performance measurement methods in ADF, which are essential to national policy at a significant cost each year, the reliability of the evaluation results can be insufficient. In this paper, the Balanced Score Card (BSC) method was applied that could be evaluated to reflect the financial and non-financial features. The relevant literature research and army regulations reflected the results of various interviews of the expert group. The extraction of success performance area in ADF was confirmed using the BSC method and the Decision Variable (DV) candidate was created to use regression for selecting the DV. Additionally, the key performance indicator was presented by verification the feasibility of content by conducting the survey of experts. The implications of this paper are as follows. First, the proposed BSC model was found to be suitable for practical use in ADF reflecting the non-profit characteristics. Second, accurate evaluation of ADF can contribute to long-term development of ADF. Finally, it can be applied to the management process of the other military sector, so it can be expected to play a role in providing basic data and spreading it to other areas.

This paper reports a safe and environmentally-benign demilitarization method for the K305 35mm CS gas grenades launcher set(also known as E-8 launcher). The launcher system was disposed by a two-step process; complete recovery of the explosive cords and the gas grenades from the launcher followed by incineration of the recovered items in the APE-1236 Flashing Furnace. All of the 64 grenades within the 16 tubes of the E-8 launcher were safely recovered and incinerated. In this study, 32 sets of the launcher were used to make a standard operating procedure for the safe demilitarization of the launcher system and the 35mm CS cartridges were all safely destroyed in the experimental burning tests meeting the related environmental regulations.

The present research evaluates the efficiency of mixed resins between anion exchange resin and active carbon. We expected synergic effect from advantages of both adsorbents. Especially, this research focused on the removal of high cencentrated perchlorate ion from demilitarization solution. The total amount of the adsorbed perchlorate ion is increased considerably with mixed resins between mono functional anion exchange resin and granular active carbon from a single adsorbent. Results demonstated that this process not only improve the efficiency of adsorbing perchlorate, but save the time, space and cost for treating perchlotrate waste solution, because of reducing organic contaminant removing process. The interference effects from coexisting anions are not significant and can successfully applied to real demilitarization sample.

Different kinds of solid rocket motors manufactured for various aim have their own shelf life. So they must be done away if not used. In general, ammonium perchlorate(AP) has used in the process of solid rocket motors, which is environmental pollutant. Out-burning and out-detonation were usual in the past, but they polluted the surrounding environment and raised safety issues. As an alternative to resolve these, water-washout process to separate the propellant from rocket motors and an eco-friendly way for recovering AP are studied in this paper.

The thermal decomposition of waste energetic materials such as TNT, RDX and composition B in a commercial rotary kiln has previously been carried out. As part of the demilitarization process, the thermal decomposition of homogeneous double base propellant (DB) used in M8 and consisting predominantly of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine is examined with respect to a number of operating conditions. A single condensed phase reaction with 4 species and 365 gas phase reactions and 59 species are considered. Simulation results show the sensitivity of the thermal decomposition of DB with temperature and velocity. At relatively low velocity with constant inlet hot air temperature, temperature in the rotary kiln was found to be highest, 953 K and 1300 K for cases 3 and 6 respectively. Illustrating that optimum operating temperature can be achieved by controlling the inlet velocity without additional cooling systems.

The purpose of this study is to separate nitrocellulose from 175 mm ammunition propellant by environmentally responsible recovery method. Recovery of nitrocellulose from obsolete ammunition is much more desirable than destruction since it can be reused in the several purpose. In spite of durable demilitarization of obsolete ammunition, the current holding amount of obsolete ammunition is gradually increasing and accumulated. The existing demilitarization methods, such as incineration and priming are strictly restricted for the noise, dust, oscillation and air and soil pollution. This study is focused on the separation of nitrocellulose by environmentally responsible recovery method by the solubility difference of nitrocellulose in nonpolar solvent. The purity of an extracted nitrocellulose was analysed by IR and TLC method and was clarified as very high.
