A plethora of transmission control protocol (TCP) congestion control algorithms have been devoted to achieving the ultimate goal of high link utilization and fair bandwidth sharing in high bandwidth-delay product (HBDP) networks. We present a new insight into the TCP congestion control problem; in particular an end-to-end delay-based approach for an HBDP network. Our main focus is to design an end-to-end mechanism that can achieve the goal without the assistance of any network feedback. Without a router's aid in notifying the network load factor of a bottleneck link, we utilize goodput and throughput values in order to estimate the load factor. The obtained load factor affects the congestion window adjustment. The new protocol, which is called TCP-goodput and throughput (GT), adopts the carefully designed inversely-proportional increase multiplicative decrease window control policy. Our protocol is stable and efficient regardless of the link capacity, the number of flows, and the round-trip delay. Simulation results show that TCP-GT achieves high utilization, good fairness, small standing queue size, and no packet loss in an HBDP environment.

In this paper, we propose a synchronization protocol for underwater acoustic networks which aims to minimize the effects of long propagation delay and uncertain delay variations and employs packet train scheme with considering low data rate. The proposed protocol uses an one-way delay measurement method by transmitting consecutive packets and acquires synchronization only considering propagation delay variations by calculating packet arrival time differences. We perform simulations under various network conditions, such as node mobility, time interval for packet transmission, network range, and elapsed time after synchronizing. The simulation results shows the superiority of our protocol, compared with a previously proposed protocol.
We propose a new channel reservation protocol which can reduce message delay by using a counter for detection of d source conflict in a WDM single-hop network with non-equivalent propagation delay. A source convict occurs when a source node has the right to transmit more than or equal to two messages simultaneously, which are transmitted using different wavelengths. In such a case, the source node has to newly obtain the right to transmit the message. In the proposed protocol, by using a source conflict counter a source node can detect a source conflict before a wave-length assignment is performed. Therefore, the source node can start a procedure to newly obtain the right to transmit the message which cannot be transmitted due to a source conflict. We analyse the throughput performance by taking the effect of a source conflict into account, and show that the approximate analysis and the computer simulated results are close. Also, from computer simulated results, we show that our proposed protocol can reduce mean message delay dramatically without degrading throughput performance as the offered load becomes large.

Vehicular-to-anything (V2X) technology is attractive for wireless vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) because it allows for opportunistic choice of a vehicular protocol between vehicular-to-vehicular (V2V) and vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. In particular, achieving seamless connectivity in a VANET with nearby network infrastructure is challenging. In this paper, we propose a density-based opportunistic broadcasting (DOB) protocol, in which opportunistic connectivity is carried out by using the nearby infrastructure and opposite vehicles for solving the problems of disconnection and long end-to-end delay times. The performance evaluation results indicate that the proposed DOB protocol outperforms the considered comparative conventional schemes, i.e., the shortest path protocol and standard mobile WiMAX, in terms of the average end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, handover latency, and number of lost packets.

In this paper, we proposed the new medium access control protocol for the virtual token bus netowrk. The network is applied to inter-processor communication network of large capacity digital switching system and digital mobile system with distributed control architecture. in the virtual token bus netowrk, the existing medium access control protocols hav ea switchove rtime overhead when traffic load is light or asymmetric according ot arbitration address of node that has message to send. The proposed protocol optimized average message delay using cyclic bus access chain to exclude switchover time of node that do not have message to send. Therefore it enhanced bus tuilization and average message delay that degrades the performance of real time communication netowrks. It showed that the proposed protocol is more enhacned than virtual token medium access control protocol and virtual token medium access control protocol iwth reservation through performance analysis.
In this paper, we analyze the mean queuing delay of selective-repeat automatic repeat request (SR-ARQ) protocol with the finite retransmission persistence. The retransmission persistence means the willingness of the protocol to retransmit a lost (or corrupted) packet to ensure reliable packet delivery across a lossy link. According to the retransmission persistence, SR-ARQ protocols have a different performance in terms of both packet delay and link reliability. So far, however, there is no serious study in the effect of the retransmission persistence on the SR-ARQ performance. We present a simple M/G/1 queuing model for the SR-ARQ protocol with the finite retransmission persistence by using the ideal SR-ARQ approximation. The mean queuing delay is obtained from the queuing model and verified its accuracy through the simulation results using the OPNET simulator. Both the analytical predictions and simulation results clearly show the effect of retransmission persistence on the queuing delay of the SR-ARQ protocol in various network conditions: packet loss rate and traffic condition over a wireless link.

In may automated systems such as manufacturing systems and process plants, an industrial network or fieldbus is a very important component for the exchange of various and sometimes crucial information. Some of the information has a tendency to rapidly lose its value as time elapses after its creation. Such information or data is called real-time data that includes sensor values and control commands. In order to deliver these data in time, the fieldbus network should be tailored to have short delay with respect to the individual time limit of various data. Fine-tuning the network for a given traffic requires the knowledge on the relationship between the protocol parameters such as timer values and the performance measure such as network delay. This paper presents a mathematical performance model to calculate communication delays of the Profibus FMS network when the timer value TTR and the traffic characteristics are given. The results of this model is compared to those from experiments to assess the model's validity.

In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient proactive data dissemination protocol with relatively low delay to cope well with highly mobile sink environments in sensor networks. In order for a dissemination tree to continuously pursue a dynamic sink, we exploit two novel algorithms: forward sink advertisement and distributed fast recovery. In our protocol, the tree is shared with the other slave sinks so that we call it Dynamic Shared Tree (DST) protocol. DST can conserve considerable amount of energy despite maintaining robust connection from all sources to sinks, since tree maintenance of DST is accomplished by just distributed local exchanges. In addition, since the DST is a kindof sink-oriented tree, each source on the DST disseminates data with lower delay along the tree and it also facilitates in-network processing. Through simulations, it is shown that the presented DST is considerably energy-efficient, robust protocol with low delay compared to Directed Diffusion, TTDD, and SEAD, in highly mobile sink environment.

We propose an advanced transaction scheduling protocol to improve the concurrency and to guarantee the mobility for the mobile database management systems. Mobility, portability, and wireless link In mobile computing environment can cause certain drawbacks, and thus it is more difficult to solve the concurrency control problems. However, a locking scheme should be used to guarantee the data consistency and to prevent the data conflicts. It is well known that data consistency is guaranteed by standard transaction scheduling schemes like two-phase locking (2PL). It has two of operation, lock and unlock. But 2PL does not give solution for mobile system. Altruistic Locking (AL) and classifying transactions, we adapt, can give solution for the previous problems. AL, as an advanced protocol, has attempted to reduce delay effects associated with lock release moment by the use of donation. In this paper, we extend those approaches and classify the transactions to reduce delay effects of short-lived transaction caused by long-lived transaction. In addition, we show efficient solution for the case of disconnection occurrence. Our protocol, namely, Mobile Altruistic Locking (MAL) is shown to be efficiently used in order to reduce delay effects and to guarantee database consistency in a state of the slippery connection in mobile database systems.

The visible light communication takes advantages of LED and PD for communication and is considered as a next generation wireless communication technology. It can support variety indoor applications. Especially, Visible LAN service has drawn much attention due to high data rate and no interference with existing WPAN system as well as high efficiency in illumination. However, existing MAC protocol occurs a high communication delay due to uplink collision and backoff time. In this paper, to reduce packet delay, we propose an enhanced MAC protocol based on FDD where the time difference between uplink frame and downlink frame transmission is utilized. Through computer simulations, we verified that the proposed MAC protocol outperforms the existing MAC protocol in terms of average packet delay.
