  • Simple correspondence analysis is a technique for giving a joint display of points representing both the rows and columns of an n$\times$p two-way contigency table. In simple correspondence analysis, the singular value decomposition is the main algebraic tool. But, Choi and Huh(1996) pointed out the singular value decomposition is not robust. Instead, they developed a robust singular value decomposition and provided applications in principal component analysis and biplots. In this article, by using the analogous procedures of Choi and Huh(1996), we derive a robust version of simple correspondence analysis.

  • In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of a domain decomposition method for the two-dimensional telegraph equations. We formulate the theoretical spectral radius of the iteration matrix generated by the domain decomposition method, because the rate of convergence of an iterative algorithm depends on the spectral radius of the iteration matrix. The theoretical spectral radius is confirmed by the experimental one using MATLAB. Speedup and operation ratio of the domain decomposition method are also compared as the two measurements of the efficiency of the method. Numerical results support the high efficiency of the domain decomposition method.

  • In multibody dynamics, differential and algebraic equations which can satisfy both equation of motion and kinematic constraint equation should be solved. To solve these equations, coordinate partitioning method and constraint stabilization method are commonly used. In the coordinate partitioning method, the coordinates are divided into independent and dependent and coordinates. The most typical coordinate partitioning method are LU decomposition, QR decomposition, and SVD (singular value decomposition). The objective of this research is to find an efficient coordinate partitioning method in the dynamic analysis of flexible multibody systems. Comparing two coordinate partitioning methods, i.e. LU and QR decomposition in the flexible multibody systems, a new hybrid coordinate partitioning method is suggested for the flexible multibody analysis.

  • The conceptual design of a rotorcraft system involves many different analysis disciplines. The decomposition of such a system into several subsystems can make analysis and design more efficient in terms of the total computation time. Adaptive parallel decomposition makes the structure of the overall design problem suitable to apply the multidisciplinary design optimization methodologies and it can exploit parallel computing. This study proposes a decomposition method which adaptively determines the number and sequence of analyses in each sub-problem corresponding to the available number of processors in parallel. A rotorcraft design problem is solved and as a result, the adaptive parallel decomposition method shows better performance than other previous methods for the selected design problem.

  • The singular value decomposition is a tool which is used to find a linear structure of reduced dimension and to give interpretation of the lower dimensional structure about multivariate data. In this paper the singular value decomposition is reviewed from both algebraic and geometric point of view and, is illustrated the way which the tool is used in the multivariate techniques finding a simpler geometric structure for the data.

  • We propose a wavelet decomposition feature extraction method for the hand-written character recognition. Comparing the recognition rates of which methods with original image features and with selected features by the wavelet decomposition we study the characteristics of the proposed method. LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis) QDA(Quadratic Discriminant Analysis) RDA(Regularized Discriminant Analysis) and NN(Neural network) are used for the calculation of recognition rates. 6000 hand-written numerals from CENPARMI at Concordia University are used for the experiment. We found that the set of significantly selected wavelet decomposed features generates higher recognition rate than the original image features.

  • Litter decomposition is a key process in energy flow and nutrient cycling in the freshwater littoral zone, and is regulated by physicochemical properties of litters. Using a litterbag method, we compared the decomposition rates of 16 different litter types from 10 plant species of the emergent macrophytes for one year in the littoral zone of the Paltangho Reservoir, Korea. The regression analysis fitted to the various decomposition models showed that mass loss of the litters with time best fitted an asymptotic function. The litters of the emergent macrophytes were composed of two compartments, labile and refractory. The macrophytic litters showed a great variety in decomposition dynamics depending on sources of litters. The labile compartment of the initial litter mass was in a wide range between 18% and 99%, and their decomposition rates varied from 0.0037 to 0.0131 day-1. The decomposition processes of the emergent macrophytes were determined by the relative amounts of the labile and refractory compartments and by the decomposition rate of the habile one in the littoral zone.

  • The ablation effects of Ar-plasma treatment and alkali-decomposition behavior in NaOH solution of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film were investigated. The modifications were evaluated by analysis of atomic force microscopy topographical changes, and by the measurement of decomposition yield in conjunction with heats of formation and electron densities of acyl carbon calculated by Parameterization Method 3 method. It has shown that the alkali-decomposition is hampered by plasma treatment and its decomposition yield is closely related with plasma treatment conditions such as exposure time to plasma. Plasma-treated PET films exhibited lower decomposition yield, compared to that of virgin PET. Increasing plasma exposure time contributes positively to decrease the decomposition yield. It has also shown that the topography of PET surface was affected by the base-promoted hydrolysis as well as Ar-plasma treatments. These behaviors are attributed to the decreased nucleophilicity of acyl carbon damaged by the ablation of Ar-plasma.

  • A directly heated $SO_3$ decomposer for the sulfur-iodine and hybrid-sulfur processes has been introduced and analyzed using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code CFX 11. The use of a directly heated decomposition reactor in conjunction with a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) allows for higher decomposition reactor operating temperatures. However, the high temperatures and strongly corrosive operating conditions associated with $SO_3$ decomposition present challenges for the structural materials of decomposition reactors. In order to resolve these problems, we have designed a directly heated $SO_3$ decomposer using RA330 alloy as a structural material and have performed a CFD analysis of the design based on the finite rate chemistry model. The CFD results show the maximum temperature of the structural material could be maintained sufficiently below 1073 K, which is considered the target temperature for RA 330. The CFD simulations also indicated good performance in terms of $SO_3$ decomposition for the design parameters of the present study.
