Methods: The data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and field records with five nurses from November 2009 to February 2011. The data were analyzed using narrative inquiry methodology. Results: Three fundamental themes were derived from data analysis as following: 'faithfulness to care for comfort,' 'helping for peaceful farewells between the patient and the family,' 'reflecting one's lives with a collision of feeling toward the death.' Conclusion: The results indicate that nurses take a role of an advocate in caring for DNR patients and being concerned about their families' conflict and anguish. In addition, this study indicates the importance of education on living will, advanced directives and preparation for the death tailored to the public including healthcare professionals.

Methods: This program was developed based on Network-Based Instructional System Design (NBISD) model, using the following 5 processes: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The program was operated for 10 weeks from March 17 to May 25, 2008. Results: There were 4 menu bars, introduction, related data, lecture room, and communication on the main page. In the operation of this program, HTML, ASP, JAVA Script, Namo web editor, Edit Plus, Front Page and multimedia technology were applied. The program content consisted of understanding elderly people, physical health, activity & exercise, nutrition, medication use, psychological health, intellectual health, understanding death, welfare system and leisure activity. Conclusion: This program could be a useful means to provide senescence preparation information to middle-aged adults. Also, it is expected to offer individualized learning opportunities to many learners in various settings. Nurses should further develop and facilitate various learning strategies including web-based programs for elder care.

  • Acute toxicity of a combined preparation of the standardized extracts Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI and Salvia miltiorrhiza BUNGE in a ratio of 3:1 was examined in male and female ICR mice. Mice were treated with the test substance intragastrically at a dose of 0 mg/kg, 5 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg or 2,000 mg/kg and observed for two weeks. No death or abnormal clinical sign was shown during the observation period. Also there were no difference in net body weight gain, organ weight, and gross pathological findings at the terminal sacrifice. The results suggested that acute oral toxicity of a combined preparation of the standardized extracts is very low at the conditions employed in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is a difference in the awareness of death based on happiness (since attitude or way of life differs among the general public, depending on the perception of death), and to investigate whether there is a difference in the interest in hospices between a group with a high happiness index and a group with a low happiness index. A survey was conducted on 200 men and women aged over 20 who participated in a walking event held in a metropolitan city on April 22, 2017. The survey consisted of eight demographic items: gender, age, education, occupation, marital status, family cohabitation, religion, and health status. It included 29 questions regarding happiness and nine questions regarding the perception of death. For the statistical tests, a chi-square test, an independent sample t-test, correlation analysis, and canonical correlation analysis were performed on the items of the survey based on a happiness index. The results of the study showed that, for a suitable place for death, medical institutions was the highest score (46.3%) for the group with a low happiness index, and own house was highest (59.4%) for the group with a high happiness index. This was a significant difference. It is thought that management systems should be supplemented by professional manpower, educating people so as to increase the utilization rates of home-based hospice as a way for patients to die in a comfortable and familiar place because, for Korea, death is much more common in hospitals. It is also necessary to increase the awareness of death and to make effective use of hospices through individual and various other approaches, considering the demographics of the subjects.

  • We should step forward from the cremation-centered funeral and consider the well-ending of the diseased from a welfare perspective. Therefore, it is necessary to re-highlight our funeral culture from a welfare perspective and to explore developmental policies in association with the well-ending of the deceased. This study aims to examine the changing history of funeral culture, to identify problems arising in the funeral culture of the Seoul Metropolitan City, and finally present policy and practice implications for funeral culture. We conducted the survey on awareness of funeral culture with recruiting 500 citizens in Seoul City. Well-ending culture is the process which secures human dignity until the last moment of the death and improves the quality of death culture. Systematic approach to well-ending culture will gain the objectives of qualitative improvement of the death. Therefore, the funeral culture paradigm should be shifted for the settlement of funeral culture applicable to aging society. Education for well-ending preparation will give a meaning of life for both the persons waiting for the death as well as the family members. We also should establish funeral facilities as culture welfare facilities where all the generations share.

Senior education programs provided by 33 Senior Welfare Centers and 41 public libraries in Seoul were compared in terms of, 6 subjects such as health, literacy/education, information education, death preparation education, hobbies and employment/volunteer. The Senior Welfare Center provided much more senior programs, whereas the public libraries appeared that the number of institutions participating in senior services was very few, and the program provision for elderly population appeared to be extremely insufficient. A specific course schedule of the program of 'making of a happiness map' of death preparation education, which is one theme among them, was developed.

  • Disease is the major problem in ginseng cultivation from seed stratification, soil preparation prior to planting, right through to drying of the roots. There are many soil-borne disease pathogen in rhizosphere soil environment, furthermore occurrence of diseases by a diverse group of fungi and related organisms are closely related to various soil condition. Observable symptoms for soil-borne diseases include wilting, leaf death and leaf fall, death of branches and limbs and in severe cases death of the whole plant. The fungus Cylindrocarpon destructans is the cause of root rot characterized by a decay of the true root system in many ginseng production areas in Korea. Some pathogens are generally confined to the juvenile roots whilst others are capable of attacking older parts of the root system. However, the relation between the soil environmental characteristics and ginseng root rot by soil-borne disease pathogen is not clearly identified in ginseng field. In this paper, we reviewed soil-borne plant pathogen causing root rot disease of ginseng with respect to soil environment.
