  • This study has attempted to investigate how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort according to daylight responsive LED(Light Emitting Diode) dimming systems in the office with venetian blind. Two studies was conducted. First study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on angle control method of the venetian blind while the workplane illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. Second study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on the amount of daylight penetrated into the building while the illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. The results of this study could be proposed as basic data in the control of the venetian blind and LED lighting in consideration of their perception on changes of brightness and visual comfort.

  • In these days, most of the office buildings are being required to save energy for maintenance. lighting system constitutes 20% to 30% of the total annual electrical energy consumption in office buildings. As an energy saving strategy for lighting system, dimming control system based on illuminance sensors came into use. But the system is accompanied with many illuminance sensors to control lighting and needs a lot of initial investment. In this study, the prediction equation for indoor daylighting illuminance distribution is proposed through the review for conventional research results and field measurements. The proposed equation was verified by the comparison between predicted results and field measurement results. The developed prediction equation for daylighting can be used to control the indoor illuminance level with the limited sensor when dimming control system is operated.

  • The daylight responsive dimming system, which uses daylight and automatically controls the light output of electric lighting according to the amount of 3.vailable daylight, is an energy saving system Successful performance relies on how photosensor signal can precisely represent workplace illuminance. However, it is not accurately identified due to the dynamic nature of the sun and the sky changed with respect to different seasons or time. The purpose of this research is to identify the correlation between workplace illuminance and photosensor signals, and propose an optimal location and spatial characteristics of the photosensor through experiments, which minimizes the above impacts and improve system performance.

  • This paper presents field measurements on daylighting and electric lighting with dimming controlled systems for a small office in Seoul, Korea. And the main purpose of this study is to provide the evaluation data of lighting energy performance when a dimming system is installed. For the performance evaluation, the mock-up room(3.6x7.2x2.6[m]) was used for the actual test. The results of this study were as follows; 1) The correlation between daylight illuminance at a workplane(Ed) and the photosensor signal(Sd) was an important factor affecting the performance of daylight responsive dimming system, 2) The mock-up office space gained a sufficient workplace illuminance of 579[lux] with the dimming control system 3) About 53[%J of monthly lighting energy could be saved using the dimming control system.

  • Smart windows are capable of varying their visible light transmittance (VLT) in response to changing environmental conditions. The VLT variability of architectural windows is highly valuable because it enables indoor lighting and energy environments to align with external changes. However, challenges such as high installation costs and assurance of glass visibility have prompted the exploration of alternative solutions, including models incorporating partially applied smart windows., Prior research focused on useful daylight illuminance (UDI) analysis for south-facing office buildings, pointing out suitable areas for smart-window implementation to enhance lighting control. In this study, we broadened this scope by determining optimal smart-window application zones under changing building orientation. Furthermore, we studied the correlation between building orientation and smart-window deployment areas.

  • According to the recent report, the lighting energy consumption of commercial buildings reaches to $30%\sim40%$ of the total energy consumption. It is more than that of cooling & heating energy consumption and it is the major target of energy-saving policy. It is obvious that they are interested in natural lighting device such as Light-shelf for the purpose of raising the lighting energy-saving efficiency. In most of highly developed countries, a thorough study on Light-shelf makes it possible to propose a practical plan while at home there leaves much to be desired to study a guiding principle of optimum plan in spite of its efficiency based on experiments using scale4 model and analysis of simulation. Aiming at making an optimum plan of Light-shelf suitable for the domestic situation, this study is worked by experiments using light-shelf and analysis of variables using illumination program. The experiments is to analyse the efficiency of Light-shelf on condition of the sky and the analysis is to make the simulation using illumination program. This study is composed of 1) the analysis of light with some variables such as presence of light-shelf and degree of angle using 1/2 scaled model 2) making the simulation using Lightscape, illumination program, In brief, concerning presence of light-shelf, it causes little difference in its efficiency in the overcast sky, whereas it decreases an illuminance of window side and provides inner side with the light, which decreases the ratio of the maximum to the minimum inner illuminance and makes the inner of illuminance to range evenly in the clear sky. On degree of angle, as the daylight increases in proportion of degree of angle, the ratio of the maximum to the minimum inner illuminance decreases, which makes it possible to increase the proportion of inner daylight.

  • Studies on daylighting of buildings have been continuously increased due to the recent escalating oil price and low-carbon strategies in developed countries. Daylighting of buildings not only saves electric energy, but provide the occupants with a comfort visual environment. Atrium spaces are adopted by many modern buildings to improve daylight performance of deep interior spaces. Among the various types of atria, the four-sided type atrium is frequently adopted by library buildings, governmental buildings and office buildings. This study aims to suggest daylighting design data for adjacent occupied spaces by conducting dynamic simulations using Daysim program. Daylight Factor(DF), Daylight Autonomy(DA) and Useful Daylight Illuminance(UDI) levels for 12 measurement points in adjacent occupied spaces were calculated for square-shape four-sided atria with different SAR(Section Aspect Ratio) and different canopy transmittance.

  • Daylighting provides the opportunity for both energy savings and improved visual comfort. An accurate estimation of the amount of daylight entering a building is the key step for daylight designing. This research aims to assess comparative daylighting performance of four different configurations of fenestration in case of unilateral windows and their variation under clear and overcast sky conditions. The selected window openings in this study were single punched, double punched, multiple punched and clerestory, and the area was same for each type of window. The experiment was designed for an office space using 1/10 scale model. Daylighting performance was evaluated by measuring the illuminance on work-plane height using Agilent data logger and photometric sensor Li-Cor. Thecomputer program ECOTECT was also used to simulate the pattern of interior illuminance distribution. Clerestory window showed the best performance in term of both illuminance level and distribution in the experiment. Multiple punched window provided more uniform illuminance distribution than single punched window. Lowest daylighting performance in the experiment was shown by double punched window.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the daylight performance at Changdeokgung Nakseonjae that is the representative and most well preserved Korean royal palace. As a result of measuring illuminance and luminance, direct sunlight is cut off by the eaves and reflective light from the court yard comes in the inside of the floor. As the layer of window is increased, daylight is decreased and the illuminance distribution is more stable because of decreasing of illuminance changes. Also, the lower part luminance is higher than upper part of window surface because direct sunlight is cut off by the eaves. This study would be used as preliminary data for applying characteristics of lighting environment of Korean royal palace to modem architecture.

  • Recently, a drain of energy resources is issued seriously. The daylight responsive dimming systems can reduce electric energy uses. But, we cannot predict amounts of energy-saving and accuracy of system performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is a development of software for the system performance of daylight responsive dimming systems. The principle of this software based on luminous flux transfer method and finite elements method. The control algorithm of this software and daylight responsive dimming systems use the same algorithm. In addition the advantages of this software are use to same algorithm of daylight responsive dimming systems, electric power-luminous flux data and rates of frequency of sky conditions. Therefore, this software can predict more correct calculation about illuminance and amounts of energy-saving of daylight responsive dimming systems.
