A Study on the Research Trends in Library & Information Science in Korea using Topic Modeling (토픽모델링을 활용한 국내 문헌정보학 연구동향 분석)

  • The goal of the present study is to identify the topic trend in the field of library and information science in Korea. To this end, we collected titles and s of the papers published in four major journals such as Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society, and Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science during 1970 and 2012. After that, we applied the well-received topic modeling technique, Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA), to the collected data sets. The research findings of the study are as follows: 1) Comparison of the extracted topics by LDA with the subject headings of library and information science shows that there are several distinct sub-research domains strongly tied with the field. Those include library and society in the domain of "introduction to library and information science," professionalism, library and information policy in the domain of "library system," library evaluation in the domain of "library management," collection development and management, information service in the domain of "library service," services by library type, user training/information literacy, service evaluation, classification/cataloging/meta-data in the domain of "document organization," bibliometrics/digital libraries/user study/internet/expert system/information retrieval/information system in the domain of "information science," antique documents in the domain of "bibliography," books/publications in the domain of "publication," and archival study. The results indicate that among these sub-domains, information science and library services are two most focused domains. Second, we observe that there is the growing trend in the research topics such as service and evaluation by library type, internet, and meta-data, but the research topics such as book, classification, and cataloging reveal the declining trend. Third, analysis by journal show that in Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, information science related topics appear more frequently than library science related topics whereas library science related topics are more popular in the other three journals studied in this paper.

A Study on the Library Service Use and Needs of Disabled Users in Korea (장애인의 도서관 서비스 이용 및 요구에 관한 연구)

  • There has been significant movements in the provision of equal access to library and information services for persons with disability. This study aimed to analyze the use and needs of library services of disabled people with a survey. The survey data revealed that the majority of disabled persons did not visit library and not experience library sol-vices. The main reason was reported that they had poor information about the library services. Also, they did not satisfy the variety, sufficiency, accessibility, up-to-dateness of the materials in general. And there were difference of favorite programs and needs among different kinds of the disabled. Therefore, active guidance and public relations about library services. improvement of accessibility for the disabled by building digital collection, resource sharing and extension of services by building library cooperation network, and the arrangement of librarians for the disabled and education for them should be back up for improving library services for the disabled.

Investigating Change of Users' Perception of Privacy Pre- and Post-Education on Library User Privacy (도서관이용자프라이버시에 대한 교육전후의 이용자인식변화 분석 연구)

  • Library users must provide their personal information to libraries. This study surveyed these library users' perception of privacy and the effect of the education after providing library user privacy education. As a result, first, it was found that after education, users were more interested in their privacy, rated the problem of library user privacy as more severe, and rated library user data collection as more likely to be considered privacy invasion. Second, we investigated users' perception of how much user service records being collected in libraries violate users' privacy, which showed a great perception change in 25 questions after the education. Third, in the survey about library and librarians' efforts for protecting library user privacy, it was found that all 15 questions were rated as significantly more important after education. Fourth, library users have recognized that is necessary to process and handle the library record and are more sympathetic to the need for this procedure. Fifth, library users felt the possibility of a library record leak was a very serious threat.

A Study of the Cooperation Models Between School Library and Public Library (학교도서관과 공공도서관 협력모델 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cases of cooperation between school libraries and public libraries in order to reinforce their cooperation, and to prepare the base for development of school libraries. Data is collected through five workshops which attended school librarians, public librarians, and the peoples in the several regional offices of education. The results show three models of school and public library cooperation. School library - public library cooperation model is suited for metropolitan area where school library and public library are developed. Public library support model is suited for mid-size cities where school libraries are undeveloped. School library and public library integration model is suited for small towns where both school libraries and public libraries are undeveloped. These models, however, should be revised through testing several libraries and different situations.

The Library Anxiety of Information Users in their 20s in East-Asia (동아시아 청년층 정보이용자의 도서관불안에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzed library awareness and anxiety among people in their 20s living in East Asia. The objective is to develop the international library cooperation agenda for life-long education proliferation. User groups in Korea, China, and Japan were investigated to understand the differences in library awareness based on the situational contexts such as preferred resources, use frequency, educational level, and gender. Results of the data analysis showed the correlation between library anxiety and use patterns such as preferred information sources and frequency of use. Specifically, the user group in China has the highest level of library anxiety with every factor. Also, the Korean user group was measured to have the lowest level of library anxiety in terms of digital information factor. Based on these results, the study presents several recommendations for resolving library anxiety such as embracing new information need with regard to environmental change and suggesting a new space policy for libraries.

  • The purpose of this study was to elicit the priority of the index of the operation evaluation of the school library, and to present measures for improvement of the evaluation index that reflects the project sites. To this end, the school library evaluation index was analyzed by applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) analysis method to teacher librarians who are the representative personnel of the school library. According to the research, the priority of the upper tier evaluation areas was human resources, library services, information resources, library management, facilities and environment, and the priority of the lower tier evaluation items was human resource allocation, human resources expertise, reading education, information literacy education, efforts to activate education, book composition snowflake, the latest book, budget, facility access, book status, appropriateness of facilities and facilities, management plan, proximity accessibility, PR and marketing, school library steering committee, cooperation, use of materials current status. The conclusions drawn from this study could be used as basic data in the application of fieldworked school library assessment indicators.

  • This research seeks to develop preservation metadata and to provide guidelines to apply PREMIS-METS decisions in a METS profile in the National Library of Korea. The process of developing metadata is divided into three steps, that is, analysis of metadata schema in other digital preservation initiatives, analysis of resources and preservation policies, and interviews with librarians in the National Library of Korea. A metadata schema consists of four main entities - object, event, agent, and rights. The study also provides a cataloging example as well as principles using PREMIS-METS for archiving digital resources. The schema has values to manage digital resources effectively and efficiently in the National Library of Korea.

A Study on the Effect of Reading Program for Alienation Children: focused on The Reading with Library Program (소외된 어린이를 위한 독서프로그램 효과 연구 - '도서관과 함께 책읽기 프로그램'을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 'The Reading with Library' program in the national library for Children and Young Adults. For this study, data was collected through surveys with 590 children in 46 institutions that participated in '2009 The Reading with Library'program. The study mainly focused on three factors - Children's Self-Esteem, Sociality, and Reading Ability and Questionnaire surveyed. The study revealed that 42(91.3%) among 46institutions showed improvement in the Children's Self-Esteem, Sociality, and Reading Ability test. As the result, 11 institutions (23.9%) were influenced by the program.

  • Digital library system is an area of multimedia data production system which can differentiate itself from the traditional libraries. While the major role of the traditional libraries is servicing the customers, digital library system is a total system which produces new-formatted knowledge from the existing and new information, and servicing the knowledge to the customers. Thus digital library system must incorporate open and standardized document formats such as SGML, and make the knowledge shareable among the other digital library systems. In order to do show the efficient implementation for the effective digital library system, a technical alternative will be introduced as performing the Digital Library Pilot project.

The study on the cooperation between public and school libraries (공공도서관과 학교도서관의 상호협력에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research was to study the merits and barriers to successful school and public library cooperation in the city of Seoul and to obtain perspective and the basic data used to implement practical cooperative measures. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 22 public libraries in city of Seoul concerning both positive and negative aspect of cooperation between two types of libraries. Based on the survey results, the following conclusions and recommendations are made ; 1) The librarians recognized the necessity of cooperation that promote efficiency of library operation and also contribute toward local community development. 2) The librarians are agreeable to the cooperative service and the institutional cooperation will prevent redundancy of collection development and will make variety of book selection possible. 3) The cooperation will not result in manpower reduction or budget saving. 4) Inconvenience due to distance between two types of library is anticipated. 5) In order to develop the skills and capabilities of the librarians, it is desirable to offer reeducational program and o n.0, pportunities to attend conferences and meetings. 6) The library user orientation program is to be held regularly. 7) It is necessary to make policy statement of library cooperation in order to maintain autonomy of each library. 8) The establishment of branch libraries and moving libraries under the educational district is recommended.
