  • This paper proposes a utility-based data rate allocation algorithm to provide high-quality mobile video streaming over femtocell networks. We first derive a utility function to calculate the optimal data rates for maximizing the aggregate utilities of all mobile users in the femtocell. The total sum of optimal data rates is limited by the link capacity of the backhaul connections. Furthermore, electromagnetic cross-talk poses a serious problem for the backhaul connections, and its influence passes on to mobile users, as well as causing data rate degradation in the femtocell networks. We also have studied a fixed margin iterative water-filling algorithm to achieve the target data rate of each backhaul connection as a counter-measure to the cross-talk problem. The results of our simulation show that the algorithm is capable of minimizing the transmission power of backhaul connections while guaranteeing a high overall quality of service for all users of the same binder. In particular, it can provide the target data rate required to maximize user satisfaction with the mobile video streaming service over the femtocell networks.

  • IP-based design methodology has been popularly employed for SoC design to reduce design complexity and to cope with time-to-market pressure. Due to the request for high performance of current mobile systems, embedded SoC design needs a multi-processor to manage problems of high complexity and the data processing such as multimedia, DMB and image processing in real time. Interface module for communication between system buses and processors are required, since many IPs employ different protocols. High performance processors require interface module to minimize the latency of data transmission during read-write operation and to enhance the performance of a top level system. This paper proposes an automatic interface generation system based on FSM generated from the common protocol description sequence of a bus and an IP. The proposed interface does not use a buffer which stores data temporally causing the data transmission latency. Experimental results show that the area of the interface circuits generated by the proposed system is reduced by 48.5% on the average, when comparing to buffer-based interface circuits. Data transmission latency is reduced by 59.1% for single data transfer and by 13.3% for burst mode data transfer. By using the proposed system, it becomes possible to generate a high performance interface circuit automatically.

  • This paper describes hardware-based high speed multimedia data reassembly processor for remote multimedia Set-Top-Box(MSTB) of interactive satellite multimedia communication system. The conventional multimedia data reassembly scheme is based on software processing of MSTB. As increasing of transmission rate for multimedia data services, the CPU load of remote MSTB is increased and reassembly performance of MSTB is limited. To provide high speed multimedia data service to end user, we proposed hardware based high speed multimedia data reassembly processor. It is implemented by using an FPGA, a PCI interface chip, and RAMs. And it is integrated in MSTB and tested. It has been confirmed to meet required all functions and processing rate up to 116Mbps.

  • The advantages of service in satellite links are representatively a long distance and large capacity transfer and simultaneous communication. And terrestrial links are of high speed and high quality data transfer Therefore a combined form of characteristics of satellite and terrestrial links is desirable to furnish a good quality service to subscribers. And in satellite links an analysis method and a simulation method of file transfer are conducted to evaluate the efficiency of file transfer. The parameters are used the message length and transmission time, and the number of chain record and transmission time. From the results of evaluation, in satellite links, it is found that when the message length is shorter than 512 bytes, the file transmission time becomes extremely long and when the message length is set at 1024 bytes, the file transmission time abruptly increase from 2048 bytes. Also it is confirmed that when the number of chain record is under 15, the file transmission time becomes extremely long and if the number increase up to 90,the time becomes gradually short and over 90,it becomes constant. Therefore, from the result of file transmission in th case of utilizing satelite links,it is confirmed that the optimum message length in the minmum transmission time is present closely at 1024 bytes. Also it is confirmed that when the satelite transmission sped becoms smaller from 24kbps to2400bps,the optimum message length also becomes smaller from 640 bytes to 256bytes.

  • In sensor networks, many methods have been proposed to process in-network aggregation effectively. Unlike general aggregation queries, skyline query processing compares multi-dimensional data for the result. Therefore, it is very difficult to process the skyline queries in sensor networks. It is important to filter unnecessary data for energy-efficient skyline query processing. Existing approach like MFTAC restricts unnecessary data transitions by deploying filters to whole sensors. However, network lifetime is reduced by energy consumption for many false positive data and filters transmission. In this paper, we propose a bottom up filtering-based skyline query processing algorithm of in-network for reducing energy consumption by filters transmission and a PBFiltering technique for improving performance of filtering. The proposed algorithm creates the skyline filter table (SFT) in the data gathering process which sends from sensor nodes to the base station and filters out unnecessary transmissions using it. The experimental results show that our algorithm reduces false positives and improves the network lifetime over the existing method.

  • A data simulator and reduction package for the Devasthal Optical Telescope Integral Field Spectrograph (DOTIFS) has been developed. Since data reduction for the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) requires complicated procedures due to the complex nature of the integral spectrograph, common reduction procedures are usually not directly applicable for such an instrument. Therefore, the development of an optimized package for the DOTIFS is required. The data simulator observes artificial object and simulates CCD images for the instrument considering various effects; e.g. atmosphere, sky background, transmission, spectrograph optics aberration, and detector noise. The data reduction package has been developed based on the outcomes from the DOTIFS data simulator. The reduction package includes the entire processes for the reduction; pre-processing, flat-fielding, and sky subtraction. It generates 3D data cubes as a final product, which users can use for science directly.

  • Wet clutches in an automatic transmission enable the transmission of the engine power by the frictional torque experienced and noted between disk and plates. Since the clutch frictional torque considerably affects the shift quality of an automatic transmission as well as the durability of the machinery, its friction characteristics must be carefully examined to meet the design requirements. The SAE No. 2 friction test machine is a well-known standard to evaluate mainly the friction characteristics of plate clutches along with the required automatic transmission fluids. This paper reviews the experimental analysis of the wet clutch friction characteristics by using the exclusively developed clutch test machine which is capable of controlling the clutch test procedure, in accordance with the applicable test standard and processing of the experimental data automatically. As the clutch test machine is designed for the accommodation of dual clutches which is applied to the real transmission, it can evaluate not only the clutch friction characteristics, but also an actuation performance of a measured clutch piston. In respect to friction characteristics involving dynamic friction coefficients, the energy absorbed in a clutch disk and the recorded temperatures of clutch plates during braking actions and procedures are also investigated. Additionally, the change of friction coefficients by the use of the repeated clutch application is also observed with the endurance test functions of an accurately calibrated and dedicated clutch test machine.

  • To solve the problem of transmission errors in stereoscopic images, this paper proposes a novel error concealment (EC) method using superpixel segmentation and adaptive disparity selection (SSADS). Our algorithm consists of two steps. The first step is disparity estimation for each pixel in a reference image. In this step, the numbers of superpixel segmentation labels of stereoscopic images are used as a new constraint for disparity matching to reduce the effect of mismatching. The second step is disparity selection for a lost block. In this step, a strategy based on boundary smoothness is proposed to adaptively select the optimal disparity which is used for error concealment. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with other methods, the proposed method has significant advantages in both objective and subjective quality assessment.

  • This paper will describe a powder and processing method that facilitates single press-single sintered densities approaching $7.5g/cm^3$. At this sintered density, mechanical properties of the powder metal (P/M) component are significantly improved over current P/M technologies and begin to approach the performance of wrought steels. High performance gears have the added requirement of rolling contact fatigue durability that is dependent upon localized density and thermal processing. Combining high density processing of engineered P/M materials with selective surface densification enables powder metal components to achieve rolling contact fatigue durability and mechanical property performance that satisfy the performance requirements of many high strength automotive transmission gears. Data will be presented that document P/M part performance in comparison to conventional wrought steel grades.

  • In this paper we have developed a message transfer protocol, CMP, which improves MSP's message processing capability. The proposed method has taken into account document classification to improve the efficiency of message processing. The difference between the conventional MSP and CMP has been addressed. The CMP's performance has been shown by various experiments including number, alphabet, Korean letter, Chinese letter, music sound and compression file transmission. And security capability of both protocols has been compared based on the specification of FIPS 140-2. The CMP's overall performance is shown to be superior to that of MSP on the processing speed in the performance perspective and on the function of cryptographic module interface and cryptographic key management in the security perspective respectively.
