  • Based on the Rodrik's four-way partition of institutions; market creating, market regulatory institution, market stabilizaing and market legitimizing institution, we analyze how FDI and interaction between FDI and democracy affect four kinds of institutions. By using fixed effect and system GMM model we estimate the direct and indirect effect of FDI on institutions within a large panel data set of 186 developing and developed countries for the period 1985-2009. We show that FDI inflows do not have a positive and significant impact on most kinds of institutions while interaction between democracy and FDI inflows have a significant and positive effect on market creating, market legitimizing and market stabilizing institution. The implication is FDI inflow does not directly lead to change the quality of institution but can indirectly improve it on the condition that democracy of host country become mature. To our knowledge this is the first article to empirically test the FDI and four-way unbundled institutions linkages.

  • This study analyzed individual-level and country-level factors affecting justification of domestic violence amid emerging social significance of family violence. For individual-level variables, prejudice against women in economic and social roles were used from the World Value Survey data. As for country-level variables, total of 36 countries were analyzed with indices that represents gender equality such as women's employment rate and democracy index. Women's employment rate was gathered from the Labour Market Database of the World Bank and democracy index was from the Economist Intelligence Unit. Results showed that both individual-level, prejudice against women in economic and social roles and country-level variables such as women's employment rate and democracy index had significant effects on justification of domestic violence. This result implies the importance of creating positive social culture which promotes positive attitudes towards perceptions of gender role and gender equality. As well, country-level endeavors to raise gender equality in employment deem important. Based on these findings, policy implications and recommendations for future research were discussed.

  • Günter Behnisch is one of the architects who played a major role as a pioneer of German modern architecture after World War II. After experiencing the era of the oppression of the Nazi right-wing national socialist, he tried to break away from the high-pressure and arrogant architecture to control everything in the building and to create a building that was born in a democratic way of thinking. He thought that architecture showed us the way we treat ourselves and the world, and that architecture formed our world view backwards. In this way, architects can express their way of thinking about their society through their works. Behnisch judged that the educational facility was the most appropriate use for implementing his democratic mindset. He hoped that this would give students the characteristics of democracy through architecture. Schools are a place where small society is experienced, and it is thought to be a medium for him to implement democratic thinking in school architecture. This study analyzed the educational facilities of Behnisch by deriving the analysis elements through the educational space organization reflecting Prakash Nair's educational facilities and educational theory and his architectural philosophy. The various plans, sections and spaces, which are characteristics of the his school facilities analyzed in this study, are expected to be helpful as data for presenting variety to many educational facilities in Korea.

Based on big data analysis, this study aims to present how the "Kim Min-sik Case," which recently brought to the fore a social issue of strengthening laws on child school zones, has realized administrative democracy and contributed to legislation due to the emergence of the online platform called "national petition." Policy changes according to the cycle of issues are divided according to time series classification and what contents are devised in each section through text mining analysis. • This paper looks into several aspects of linguistic behaviors attested in Korean and American English corpora. A special attention is paid to the areas of politeness phenomena, terms of address, power and solidarity, practice of flattery, and closely-related non-linguistic behaviors such as tipping and gift-giving conventions. An analysis of the data reveals that Korean society remains very much superior-oriented, non-egalitarian, non-democratic despite the pride and sense of accomplishment among the populace that the nation has achieved a satisfactory level of democracy. In particular, the following facts in Korean and the Korean society are exposed by an examination of the data: ${\bullet}$ There is a notional gap of positive politeness ${\bullet}$ Superiors enjoy an unfair advantage in the power and solidarity system ${\bullet}$ The terms of address system is set up to make a clear distinction between levels and the terms of address, in turn, dictate norms of expected behavior ${\bullet}$ The notion and practice of flattery heavily favors superiors ${\bullet}$ Non-linguistic acts of gift-giving and tipping are consistent with the examined social interactions As a result, all the benefits, emotional as well as material, are garnered by superiors. These facts may reflect the real Korea that people are used to being comfortable with, a pre-modern, feudalistic society, something akin to its kin in the north. We may proclaim that we aspire to a more democratic society. However, it appears Koreans, deep inside, may have been seeking a powerful dictator all along. These findings help provide a partial but insightful clue to the political puzzle: why Koreans grew uncomfortable with an egalitarian and democratic president and could not save him, but instead replaced him with a succession of a corrupted businessman and the authoritarian daughter of a former dictator. The flight to democracy has stalled in midair, not quite making the grade yet. There is plenty of linguistic evidence in Korean.

  • This paper tries to explore the impact of economic globalization on social capital accumulation. To investigate direct effect, we build a model and derive a proposition which can explain the relative decline in social capital brought about by market expansion. Besides direct effect, we also explore channel effect through democracy, government size, education attainment, and inequality. We estimate direct and channel effect of globalization using cross section of 65 countries data time period 1980-1999 using three-stage least squares(3SLS). Results are in line with predictions and clearly support that globalization significantly and negatively affects social capital accumulation. Channel effect also shows that globalization has a negative effect through aggravating income inequality while it has a positive effect through higher education attainment, higher level of democracy and larger government spending. Such a net negative channel effect reinforces our prediction. As a robustness check we estimate other sets of data and the result strongly supports our theory.

  • In the early 2012, European Union proposed new legal framework, including the right to be forgotten, for the protection of personal data. The new Proposal articulates kind of sweeping new privacy right and there has been debates on its potential threat to free speech in the digital age. While the situation is similar in Korea, I want to introduce the right to be forgotten in the Proposal. Then, I will analyze current legal system in Korea regarding the new privacy right and suggest some guidelines in searching direction for the coming legislation with respect to the right to be forgotten. The right to be forgotten should not have been promulgated without considering fully its effect on the free speech, especially in the society where the voice toward direct democracy or movement toward participation of the citizen, mainly through cyber space or Social Network Services, has risen much higher in Korea. Especially, the new right seems not to cover the control of data subject on a third party where the third party expressing his opinion by posting himself other's personal data on his blog or others.

  • The premise of the intentional model of split-ticket voting is that some voters split their tickets simply because they prefer divided government and believe in constant "checks and balances." This article examines whether this premise stands firm in an emerging democracy like Taiwan. That is, by using survey data in Taiwan, we explore whether one's attitude toward divided or unified government is "real." We hypothesize that a citizen's attitude toward "checks and balances" is subject to change, and conditional on whether her preferred party is in power. Specifically, we speculate that a citizen would tend to hold the balancing perspective or favor divided government, if her preferred party is in opposition. However, if her preferred party becomes the ruling party, she would be more likely to oppose (hold) the balancing (non-balancing) perspective or favor unified government. We then utilize panel survey data embedded in Taiwan's Election and Democratization Studies (TEDS) to verify our hypothesis.
