  • Flow exchanges between stream and groundwater are assessed on urban streams in Daegu, Korea. Two rivers and 25 streams with the total length of 240 km run through the study area. The interaction between surface water and groundwater was estimated using Darcy's method. The study was conducted by dividing the basin into 16 smaller watersheds, and for comparison purposes. Groundwater level, surface water level, hydraulic conductivity, thickness of aquifer, and the distance between the well and the nearest stream were used for quantifying the interaction. To investigations the groundwater interaction in the watersheds, the amount of effluent seepage from groundwater to the stream, the amount of influent seepage from the stream to groundwater, and the amount of annual interaction between surface water and groundwater were computed. The total amount of effluent seepage from the groundwater to stream in the basin was approximately $72{\times}10^6m^3/year$. The total amount of influent seepage from the stream to groundwater was approximately $35{\times}10^6m^3/year$. It appeared that the total amount of annual interaction between surface water and groundwater was approximately $108{\times}10^6m^3/year$ and the total groundwater flow balance was approximately $37{\times}10^6m^3/year$. The annual amount of interaction between the surface water and groundwater was the largest in the Goryung Bridge Basin($29{\times}10^6m^3/year$) and the least in the Dalchang Dam Basin($0.2{\times}10^6m^3/year$). The results show that flow exchanges between stream and groundwater are very active and that there are significant difference among the smaller watersheds. Finally, the results indicate that it is necessary to further investigate to more precisely understand the interaction characteristics between surface water and groundwater in urban areas.

  • Hyporheic zone is a region beneath and alongside a stream, river, or lake bed, where there is mixing of shallow groundwater and surfacewater. Hyporheic exchange controls a variety of physical, biogeochemical and thermal processes, and provides unique ecotones in a aquatic ecosystem. Field and experimental observations, and modeling studies indicate that hyporheic exchange is mainly in response to pressure gradients driven by the geomorphological features of stream beds. In the reach scale of a stream, pool-riffle structures dominate the exchange patterns. Flow over a pool-riffle sequence develops recirculation zones and stagnation points, and this flow structures make irregular pressure gradient which is driving force of the hyporheic exchange. In this study, 3 D hydro-dynamic model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the surface water and Darcy's Law and the continuity equation for ground water. The two sets of equations are coupled via the pressure distribution along the interface. Simulation results show that recirculation zones and stagnation points in the pool-riffle structures dominantly control the upwelling and downwelling patterns. With decrease of recirculation zones, length of donwelling zone formed in front of riffles is reduced and position of maximum downwelling point moves downward. The numerical simulation could successfully predict the behavior of hyporheic exchange and contribute the field study, river management and restoration.

  • This study attempts to simulate the structure of a woody leaf netted venation system by using topology optimization techniques. Based on finite element method (FEM) analysis of an incompressible fluid, a topology optimal design is applied to those woody leaf netted venation models. To solve the transverse shear locking problem of a thin plate caused by the Mindlin-Reissner plate model where a leaf netted venation is assumed to be a thin plate, a P1-nonconforming element and selective reduced integration are employed. Topology optimal design is applied to multiple physical domains. Combined with the Darcy-Stokes flow problems and extended to the optimal design of fluid channels, the multiple physical models of the flow system are analyzed and venation patterns of leafs are simulated. The calculated optimal shapes are compared with the natural shapes of woody leaf venation patterns. This interdisciplinary approach may improve our understanding of the leaf venation system.

  • The adsorption characteristics of L-tryptophan of PES-BSA affinity membranes prepared by using electro-spinning were investigated. It was found that the fiber diameters could be controlled by the comparisons of fiber diameters prepared by various spinning conditions through FESEM and Image Analyzer. Darcy's permeability constants, mechanical properties and hydrophobic properties were enhanced since micro-fibers increased by increasing the composition ratio of HFB and BSA. The elution capacity of L-tryptophan in borate-DMSO buffer solution was higher than that in tris-HCl buffer solution, while the elution capacity of A 7906 type BSA was higher than A 8022 type BSA. This is due to the characteristics of BSA type, i. e. higher purity and uniform molecular weight and better pH stability of A 7906 type BSA than those of A 8022 type BSA.

  • 본 연구에서 AFDA(Approximate Full Distribution Approach)를 사용하여 하수관의 불능확률을 정량적으로 산정할 수 있는 신뢰성 모형이 개발되었다.

  • A numerical scheme based on a coordinate transform into stream function-velocity potential is proposed to solve heat and momentum transfer in porous media with phase change. A significant simplification of both computational domain and governing equations can be achieved by the transform. The dispersion term in the flow through porous media, which is important at the phase change interface, can be successfully incorporated into the numerical scheme without introducing any further computational complications.

  • When yields the mean velocity of the closed conduit which is used generally, it is available to use Darcy Weisbach Friction Loss Head equation. But, it is inconvenient very because Friction Loss coefficient f is the function of Reynolds Number and Relative roughness (${\varepsilon}$/d). So, it is demanded more convenient equation to estimate. In order to prove the reliability and an accuracy of Chiu's velocity equation from the research which sees hereupon, proved agreement very well about measured velocity measurement data by using Laser velocimeter which is a non-insertion velocity measuring equipment from the closed conduit (Laser Doppler Velocimeter: LDV) and an insertion velocity measuring equipment and the Pitot tube which is a supersonic flow meter (Transit-Time Flowmeters). By proving theoretical linear-relation between maximum velocity and mean velocity in laboratory flume without increase and decrease of discharge, the equilibrium state of velocity in the closed conduit which reachs to equilibrium state corresponding to entropy parameter M value has a trend maintaining consistently this state. If entropy M value which is representing one section is determinated, mean velocity can be gotten only by measuring the velocity in the point appearing the maximum velocity. So, it has been proved to estimate simply discharge and it indicates that this method can be a theoretical way, which is the most important in the future, when designing, managing and operating the closed conduit.

  • Manifold researches for carbon capture and storage (CCS) have been developed and large scale-carbon capture system can be performed recently. Hence, the technologies for $CO_2$ sequestration or storage become necessary to handle the captured $CO_2$. Among them, enhanced oil recovery using $CO_2$ can be a solution since it guarantees both oil recovery and $CO_2$ sequestration. In this study, the miscible flow of oil and $CO_2$ in porous media is modeled to analyze the effect of enhanced oil recovery and $CO_2$ sequestration. Based on Darcy-Muskat law, the equation is modified to consider miscibility of oil and $CO_2$ and the change of viscosity. Finite volume method is used for numerical modeling. As results, the pressure and oil saturation changes with time can be predicted when oil, water, and $CO_2$ are injected, respectively, and $CO_2$ injection is more efficient than water injection for oil recovery.

  • Here we consider magneto-convection in a mushy layer which is formed during solidification of binary alloys. The mushy layer is treated as an active porous media with variable permeability. The equations governing the layer are conservation of mass, conservation of heat, conservation of solute, magnetic induction equation, momentum equation governed by the Darcy's law and Maxwell's equations for the magnetic field. To study the second order effects on the flow without solving the second order system, we need to obtain the adjoint system for the flow. This motivates the authors we derive the adjoint system analytically for the mushy layer case. Numerical results of the adjoint system are presented for passive and active mushy layers at the onset of the motion using a set of parameters experimentalists use.
