  • UV-irradiated skin shows acutely erythema, edema, pigmantation (sunbum) and chronically coarse wrinkling, roughness, dryness, laxity (photoaging). Jawoongo(紫雲膏, JW) is clinically useful external application and effective bum, sunburn, wound and symptom of dryness(燥症) in skin disease. In this experiment, we examined if JW could cure the UVB-mediated acute skin damages, inhibit UVB-mediated oxidative stress and inflammation of skin, and block the photoaging. In vivo test, we found that JW could effectively cure the UVB-mediated acute skin damages(erythema, edema, angiogenesis, hyperplasia, infiltration of lymphocytes) and inhibit expression of HSP70, CYP1A1 and p53. We also found that JW could repair destruction of collagen fiber and inhibit activation of MMP-9, and inhibit expression of $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65, iNOS, hyperplasia of keratynocyte. In vitro test, we found that JW could inhibit expression of IKK, iNOS mRNA, and production of NO. These findings shows that JW could cure the UVB-mediated acute skin damages, inhibit UVB-mediated oxidative stress and inflammation of skin, and block photoaging.

  • A decrease in coronary blood flow leads to an imbalance between the supply of oxygen to the myocardium and its demand, and reversible or irreversible damage to the myocardium could occur depending on the severity of the resultant ischemia and the duration of the imbalance. This imbalance results in a cascade of ischemic reactions in the following order: metabolic abnormalities, diastolic dysfunction, systolic dysfunction, and electrocardiogram changes. Variant angina is caused by the closure of the coronary artery due to reversible coronary artery spasm, resulting in myocardial ischemia and subsequent chest pain as a clinical symptom. Variant angina may be observed as ST segment elevation in electrocardiogram measured when present in chest pain. However, 12-lead electrocardiogram performed after the patient's chest pain resolves does not help in the diagnosis. Since the duration of chest pain appears to be <15 minutes, it is important to perform the 12-lead electrocardiogram when clinical symptoms are present. If nitroglycerin is administered without performing 12-lead electrocardiogram by 119 pre-hospital paramedics, the chest pain would be resolved, making it impossible to identify changes in the ST segment. Before administration of nitroglycerin, changes in the ST segment must be recorded by performing 12-lead electrocardiogram.

  • Virginia creeper (or five-leaved ivy; Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is one of the most popular and widely grown climbers worldwide. In September 2021, Virginia creeper leaves with typical rust symptom were found in an arboretum in Korea, with severe damage. Globally, there is no record of a rust disease on Virginia creeper. Using morphological investigation and molecular phylogenetic inferences, the rust agent was identified as Neophysopella vitis, which is a rust pathogen of other Parthenocissus spp. including Boston ivy (P. tricuspidata). Given that the two ivy plants, Virginia creeper and Boston ivy, have common habitats, especially on buildings and walls, throughout Korea, and that N. vitis is a ubiquitous rust species affecting Boston ivy in Korea, it is speculated that the host range of N. vitis may recently have expanded from Boston ivy to Virginia creeper. The present study reports a globally new rust disease on Virginia creeper, which could be a major threat to the ornamental creeper.

  • Damage of tea bagworms, Eumeta minuscula was observed for the first time from grape leaves of grape (varieties: Cambell Early and M.B.A.) from a vinery at Gumho-up, Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk on 31 August, 2012. Activity of insecticides [Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (serotype IIIa, IIIb) WP, chlorantraniliprole 5% GP, methoxyfenozide 21% SC, spinetoram 5% GP, and spinosad 10% GP] was tested on fourth instar larvae of Eumeta minuscula in laboratory. Mortality of 4th instar of Eumeta minuscula was higher when treated with spinosad 10% WG (88.7%) and spinetoram 5% WG (67.7%) sprayed with field recommended concentration using a home sprayer in laboratory. Mortality decreased as the concentration decreased, however leaf damage rate was significantly different between the one-fourth rate and the control. Spinetoram 5% WG and spinosad 10% WG showed 63.7 and 55.7% respectively mortality of fourth instar Eumeta minuscula in field. Though these two insecticides could be used for the control of bagworms on grape, a more effective insecticide needs to be found.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the damage of root rot of hop by heptachlor residues in soil at nine farm fields and pot experiment for two years from 1980 to 1981. 1) Pot experiment results indicated that root rot of hop occurred in farm field were caused by heptachlor phytotoxicity. 2) The damage of root rot of the hop was found by heptachlor residues in soil. Hop root in the low concentration of heptachlor was turned to brown mottle, and then rotted. In high concentration, the hop root was decreased in number, blocked in growth, and resulted to greyish change with death. 3) Hop vine damaged by heptachlor was hardened and broken with ease. 4) Heptachlor epoxide which was inferred to be the main cause of hop root rot gave the damage to hop at 0.009 ppm reisdues in soil. 5) The phytotoxicity of heptachlor was proved to last for 10 years or more in this study.

  • A leafhopper, Zorka sp. was collected from a persimmon (Diospyrosi kaki, cv SangjuDungsi) orchard in Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea on 15 June, 2008. This leafhopper gave a serious damage to persimmon leaves, being a new pest to persimmon. This leafhopper was tentatively identified as Zorka sp., which has not been recorded in the science. White spots of <1mm-circle occurred around the vein of damaged leaves. Most part of leaf was turned to white when heavy infection occurred. The first symptom occurred from 4 days after introduction of Zorka sp. (4 adults/persimmon leaf). We investigated the occurrence of Zorka sp. in the persimmon orchards in Korea from 2008 to 2009. Total 143 orchards from 11 cities in 6 provinces were observed from July to August. The damage caused by Zorka sp. was found in 22 orchards (15.4%) of the investigated. According to locality, 40.7% of orchards were damaged in Yeongdong, Chungcheongbuk-do and 33.3% in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do. However, no damage was observed from the orchards in Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeju-do, south part of Korea. Especially, 9 of 11 orchards in Youngdong were located close to grapevine yards.

  • Methanol is a clear, colorless, volatile, and poisonous liquid that is commonly used as an industrial solvent. Visual impairment is a common symptom of methanol poisoning; however, visual impairment rarely occurs after exposure through inhalation. Therefore, visual loss after methanol intoxication via respiration has rarely been reported. We report a case of visual damage associated with methanol poisoning via respiratory exposure in an industrial setting. In this case in South Korea, a 28-year-old woman who worked at a cell phone factory was admitted to the emergency department with mental changes. She had blurred vision that began two days prior, but she did not come to the hospital until she experienced mental changes. She ranked 9 on the Glasgow Coma Scale and presented with severe metabolic acidosis. So, she was admitted to intensive care, and continuous renal replacement therapy was performed. Finally, she was discharged after recovery of her mental state, but had to undergo rehabilitation for six months. Also, her visual impairment was permanent. Methanol intoxication can occur through inhalation, which is difficult to detect initially. However, treatment of methanol poisoning is time-critical. Therefore, doctors should always keep in mind that methanol intoxication may occur via respiration. If in doubt, treatment should be given as soon as possible.

  • Purpose : Fever, the most common presenting symptom in pediatric clinics, has been believed to be a dangerous symptom by many parents. Proper recognition about fever will relieve unnecessary anxiety of parents and help them understand the course of the disease. Our objectives of this study were to investigate current parental recognition about fever and to compare these results with those described in 1992. Methods : Between May and July 2006, we questioned caregivers who visited the pediatric outpatient clinic in St.Paul hospital. The questionnaire consisted of 19 items asking about recognition, attitude and management of fever. Results : A total of 136 caregivers were interviewed. Compared with 10 years ago, there were no significant improvements in misconception about fever. Many caregivers (61%) had wrong information about a definition and the way to measure body temperature. There were still high concerns about febrile convulsion and brain damage from fever. Caregivers started treatment at the body temperature which actually needed no therapy. Conclusion : Parents were not aware that fever is just one of physiologic responses and has benefits, which led to unnecessary anxiety and treatment. This misconception has not been changed over the years. Pediatrician should inform parents that fever itself is not harmful and only rational reason for use of antipyretics is to relieve a discomfort of a febrile child. An educational interventions offered by pediatricians will be helpful for parents to have right attitude and understandings toward fever.

  • Apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd) is one of the smallest viral pathogens infecting fruits, especially apple, and causes a significant damage to fruit trees. ASSVd usually induced the skin-dapple ring symptoms, but in 'Fuji' varieties, corked spot were occurred on the fruit skin in 2009. This new symptom will be of great helpful to diagnosis ASSVd in sight. ASSVd was surveyed in apple and pear from 2009 to 2010 in Korea, and ASSVd was identified in 20 out of 1,193 trees. The infection rate was 1.7%. To screen the infectivity of ASSVd among apple cultivars, real-time RT-PCR was applied followed by designing of ASSVd specific primers based on highly conserved regions of several ASSVd isolates including Korean isolate. NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (nad 5) gene, which is mRNA of the mitochondrial gene, was used for internal control. In this study, ASSVd infected apples were classified into 12 groups depending on different symptoms and symptom severity (scaring, rusting or malformation). Taken together, this study suggested that real-time PCR analysis was more sensitive to detect the low copy of ASSVd on early viroid infected apple skins than regular RT-PCR method.
