  • Background: Human papilloma virus infection is associated with genesis and malignant potential of cervical cancer. E6 and E7 oncogens are known to bind to p53 and retinoblastoma gene products, abrogating their functions as tumor suppressors, leading to an abnormal cell cycle machinery. Roles of the p53 homolog p63 have also been postulated, E6 expression leading to TAp63b degradation allowing anchorage independent growth. Molecular studies correlated with clinicopathological factors are important to determine prognosis and treatment strategies, but results have been controversial and need to be clarified. Aim: To investigate expression of p53 and p63 in cervical squamous cell carcinomas in correlation with age, FIGO staging, morphology, and cancer cell proliferation. Materials and Methods: Expression of p53 and p63 immunohistochemical staining in a total of 56 paraffin-embedded tissues of cervical squamous cell carcinomas from Dr. Sardjito General Hospital Indonesia, was evaluated for correlation with clinicopathological parameters. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the percentage of p53 and p63 expression with patient age, FIGO staging and morphology and to compare mean p53 and p63 expression. The Spearman correlation test was applied to correlate p53 and p63 expression with that of Ki-67. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There were significant associations between p53 expression with age (p=0.019) and FIGO staging (p=0.026), but not with with morphology or Ki-67 expression. There were no links between p63 expression and age, morphology, FIGO staging or Ki-67. Conclusions: This study indicated that p53 has a prognostic value in cervical squamous cell carcinomas given the relation with FIGO staging.

  • Cleanout of the F Reactor Fuel Storage Basin (FSB) is an element of the FSB decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) and is required to complete interim safe storage (ISS) of the F Reactor. Following reactor shutdown and in preparation for a deactivation layaway action in 1970, the water level in the FReactor FSB was reduced to approximately 0.6 m (2 ft) over t]to floor. Basin components and other miscellaneous items were left or placed in the FSB. The item placement was performed with a sense of finality, and no attempt was made to place the items in an orderly manner. The F Reactor FSB was then filled to grade level with 6(20of local surface material (essentially a fine sand). The reactor FSB backfill cleanout has the potential of having to remove spent nuclear fuel (SNF) that may have been left unintentionally. Based on previous cleanout of six water-filled FSBs with similar designs (i.e., the B, C, D, and DR FSBs in the 1980's), it was estimated that up to five SNF elements could be discovered in the F FSB (I). In reality about 17 full SNF elements were found in the excavation. This paper covers the technical and programmatic challenges of performing this decommissioning effort with some of the controls used for SNF management. The paper also will highlight how many various technologies were married into a complete package to address the issue at hand and show how no one tools could complete the job, but combined, good progress is being made.

  • We have synthesized the soluble polymide based side chain system with covalently attached NLO chromophore Disperse Red 1. The developed polymer is optically transparent in the range of optical communication wave-lengths. Its glass transition temperature$(T_g)$ and thermal decomposition temperature$(T_d)$ are $225^{\circ}C, 310^{\circ}C$ respectively. The poled film with the poling field of $100 V/\mu\textrm{m}$ shows that the dielectric constant is 3.37 at the 10-kHz frequency, the refractive indices of TM and TE modes are both 1.631 at $\lambda = 1300 nm$, and the Electro-optic coefficients are 4.6~9.2 pm/V at $\lambda = 1300 nm$. There are no decays of the EO coefficient in the poled polymer at $180^{\circ}C$ in one hour, and $90^{\circ}C$ in 500 hours.

  • Since 1997, Dr. Shin-ya Nishimura has been developing an actual town planning project named the "Gangi Project". Students, inhabitants and local professionals walk around Omotemachi, examine the characteristics of the environment and the inhabitants' way of life, discuss plans and designs for traditional wooden arcades called locally "gangi". Students and inhabitants build the gangi together every year. The purpose of this study is to clarify how an experimental project aiming to preserve a living environment obtains sustainability as an actual town planning exercise. The research hypothesizes that sustainable town planning should include strategies for financial autonomy, active participation of inhabitants, supports from local professionals, an acceptance of changing environments, and responsible construction. The project has been carried out as a part of actual town planning, and continues to create a daily living environment based on the recent economical and industrial situation of the town. By focusing on the influences of the project on the town and inhabitants, the study has revealed the possibility of an actual town planning with small budget, and importance of a collaborative relationship with various participants in order to foster a sense of responsibility regarding the construction. The project also highlights the implication that sustainable town planning creates not only a participatory system but also a collaborative one in which participants take responsibility for the issues involved in the construction process.

  • Background: Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) is considered a subtype of adenocarcinoma of the lung. Recently BAC has been variously termed adenocarcinoma in situ, minimally invasive adenocarcinoma, lepidic predominant invasive adenocarcinoma, and invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma. The aim of the study was to analyze and detect prognostic factors of patients with BAC over a 7-year period. Materials and Methods: This retrospective single-center study included 44 patients with BAC. The impact on survival of fifteen variables (gender, age, smoking status, cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, fever, chest pain, sputum, metastasis number, Karnofsky performance status, pT, pN, TNM stage, cytotoxic chemoterapy) were assessed. Results: Median age was 55 years (38-83). Most patients were male (63.6%) and stage IV (59.1%). Twenty-one patients (47.7%) received cytotoxic chemotherapy (platinum-based regimens) for metastatic disease. Objective response rate was 33.3% (4 partial, 3 complete responses). Stable disease was observed in nine in patients (42.8%). Disease progression was noted in 5 (23.8%). The median OS for all patients was 12 months (95%CI, 2.08-22.9 months). Independent predictors for overall survival were: Karnofsky performance status (HR:3.30, p 0.009), pN (HR:3.81, p 0.018), TNM stage (HR:6.49, p 0.012) and hemoptysis (HR:2.31, p 0.046). Conclusions: Karnofsky performance status, pN, TNM stage and hemoptysis appear to have significant impact on predicting patient survival in cases of BAC.
