Three flavonoids, quercetin, taxifolin, and kaempferol were isolated from the woods of Liriodendron tulipifera. Their structures were determined by spectral analysis. Based on 1, l-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity method, the antioxidative activities of three isolated compounds and their acetates were measured in order to search for natural antioxidants. The IC50 of quercetin (1), taxifolin (2), and kaempferol (3) were 3.6, 3.9, and 4.1 ㎍/㎖, respectively.
Objectives : This Study was performed to assess the antioxidative and neuroprotective effect of Guibi-tang(Guipi-tang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) on PC12 cells. Methods : The antioxidative effect was investigated through the DPPH radical and ABTS cation scavenging methods and total polyphenol amount of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang). The neuroprotective effect of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was assessed using MTT assay in PC12 cells. The scavenging effect of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) on NO and ROS production induced by 6-OHDA in PC12 cells was evaluated, as well as the attenuating effect of Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) on GSH reduction. Results : 1. Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) had concentration-dependent scavenging activities of DPPH radical 2. Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) had concentration-dependent scavenging activities of ABTS cation. 3. Total polyphenol amount of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was calculated 79.10${\pm}$2.20 pg/IO mg and 121.03${\pm}$1.11 pg/IO mg, respectively. 4. Cell viability of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) was increased in a dose dependent manner. Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was increased at low concentrations, but decreased at high concentrations. 5. In Guibi-tang(Guipitang), cell viability of PC12 cell treated with 6-OHDA was decreased by pre-treatment, and increased by post- and co- treatment. Cell viability of Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) showed variable effects by pre-treatment, but increased by post- and co- treatment. 6. NO production rate of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) didn't show a significant effect, but that of Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was decreased in a dose dependent manner. 7. ROS production rate of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) was decreased at some concentrations. In Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang), ROS production rate was decreased at high concentrations. 8. Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) protected the 6-OHDA-induced GSH reduction. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that both Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and GBTGMB have antioxidative and neuroprotective effect, but Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) has more antioxidative and neuroprotective effect than Guibi-tang.
The antioxidative activities and anti-inflammatory effects of rice bran and wheat bran were investigated. To determine the antioxidant activity, total phenolic content. DPPH reaction, ABTS reaction and FRAP assay were tested. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effect, the inhibition of NO production, IL-6 production and TNF-${\alpha}$ production were observed. The total phenolic contents were 46.4 mg/g in the BuOH fraction of rice bran (RBB) and 69.0 mg/g in BuOH fraction of wheat bran (WBB). EtOAc fraction of rice bran (RBE), EtOAc fraction of wheat bran (WBE), RBB and WBB showed high radical scavenging activity at a concentration of 5 mg/ml. Scavenging activity of DPPH radical were 89.04% in RBB and 91.53% in WBE. Scavenging activity of ABTS radical were 88.53% in RBB and 90.39% in WBB. In case of FRAP assay, RBE reduced 0.805 mM/mg of Fe2+ and WBE reduced 1.521 mM/mg of Fe2+. RBB, RBE, WBB and WBE showed concentration dependent inhibition of LPS induced NO production (RBE: 57.38%, WBE: 76.85%), IL-6 production (RBE: 92.08%, WBB: 92.57%), TNF-α production (RBE: 86.33%, WBE: 85.05%) at a concentration of 100 μg/ml of each fraction. These results showed that RBB, RBE, WBB and WBE have strong antioxidative activities and anti-inflammatory effects and show the possibilities of a new natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory medicines.

Annona muricata, generally known as soursop, graviola, or sirsak, is native to the warmest tropical areas of North and South America and is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical parts of the world, including India and Nigeria. This study tested the contents of polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, and minerals, as well as the antioxidative effects of DPPH radical-scavenging activity, Fe/Cu-reducing power, linoleic-acid peroxidation using thiobarbituric-acid (TBA) methods and peroxidation of rat-hepatocyte microsomes, and ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay. These were tested with in-vitro experimental models using water, ethanol, and methanol extracts of the Annona muricata leaf (AMl). Water extracts of AMl showed the highest extraction yield (1.76%). The total polyphenol-compound concentration was the highest in the methanol extract of AMl. However, the flavonoids concentration was the highest in the ethanol extracts of AMl. AMlMl major minerals were Ca, K, and Mg. In DPPH radical-scavenging activity, the contents exhibited a strong scavenging effect on the ethanol and methanol extracts of AMl. Additionally, the Fe/Cu-reducing power was strong in ethanol and methanol extracts of AMl. $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate-induced linoleic-acid peroxidation using TBA methods and auto-oxidation of rat-hepatic microsomes showed strong antioxidative activities in ethanol extracts of AMl. ${\beta}$-Carotene bleaching was also highest in the ethanol extracts of AMl. These results may provide the basic data to understand the chemical characteristics and antioxidative effects of Annona muricata leaf extract for the development of functional foods.
This research aimed to improve the healthy properties of puffer fish broth, which has been utilized in Korean and Japanese food. Various healthy foods such as garlic, onion, mushroom, and cauliflower were added as ingredients to pufffer fish stock, and the antioxidative activity of each stock was measured by assaying the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, reducing power and amount of polyphenol. Shiitake was the most effective in increasing the antioxidative activity of puffer fish stock. The high antioxidative activity of shiitake mushroom seems to be correlated with the amount of polyphenol content in puffer fish broth. The antioxidant activities of puffer fish stock increased proportionally with increasing amount of added shiitake, which in turn was due to the increased amount of total polyphenol in the stock.

Background: Eucommia ulmoides has long been used as an herbal medicine for the treatment of diabetes, hypertension and other diseases in many Asian countries. Methods and Results: This study aimed at evaluating the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of its water (EU-DW, and REU-DW) and ethanol (EU-EtOH, and REU-EtOH) extracts, as well as those of non-roasted E. ulmoides (EU) and roasted EU (REU) cortex. The following were assessed in each extract: total phenolic and flavonoid contents, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and nitrite radical scavenging activities, reducing power, DNA damage prevention activity, and nitric oxide (NO) inhibition activity. Both EU and REU extracts showed high phenolic and flavonoid content, dose-dependent DPPH radical scavenging capacity, high reducing activity, and considerable DNA damage prevention activity. EU extracts showed remarkable ABTS free radicals scavenging capacity. REU extracts showed a higher radical scavenging capacity and played an important role in inhibiting NO production. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that aqueous and ethanol extracts of EU and REU possess antioxidant capacities, and prevent oxidative damage to DNA, probably owing to their phenolic and flavonoid content. Therefore, EU and REU could be candidates antioxidant supplements.
In this study, we investigated the biological activity of antioxidant and antimicrobiological effect of Chondria crassicaulis (CC), which, using methanol, dichlolometane and ethanol, were extracted and fractionated into four different types: hexane(CCMH), methanol (CCMM), butanol (CCMB), and aqueous (CCMA) partition layers. The reducing activity on the 1,I-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and $O^{2-}$ and $O_{2}$$O_{2}$radical scavenging potential, in search for antioxidation effects of CC partition layer, were sequentially screened. Among the four fractions, CCMM had the highest antioxidative activity. The antimicrobial activity was increased in proportion to its concentration by the paper disc method. Among the various solvent layers, the CCMB, CCMH and CCMM showed relatively strong antimicrobial activities in the order.
Phytochemical examination of Barks of Ulmus macrocarpa has led to the isolation and characterization of two fla-vanonol, taxifolin $7-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (1), taxifolin $3'-0-7-{\beta}-glucopyranoside$ (2), two flavanone eriodictyol $7-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (3), nalingenin $7-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (4), three flavan 3-ol, (+)-catechin (5), (-)-epicatechin (6), (+)-catechin 7-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside (7) and one proanthocyanidin, procyanidin B-1 (8). Antioxidative activity of these compounds was determined by measuring the radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals . (+)-Catechin (5) , (-)-epicatechin (6), (+)-catechin $7-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ (7) and procyanidin B-1 (8) showed significant antioxidative activity.
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of Celastrus orbiculatus (CO). CO was extracted with methanol and then further fractionated with n-hexane (COMH), butanol (COMB), methanol (COMM) or aqueous (COMA) to get active fractions. The antioxidative activity of fractions from CO was investigated by measuring the scavenging activities of CO against DPPH radical, peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) and reactive oxygen speicies (ROS). Among the various solvent fractions, the COMB showed a marked scavenging effect against DPPH radical, peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) and reactive oxygen species(ROS). The antimicrobial activity was increased in proportion to its concentration by the paper disk method. Among the various solvent fractions, the COMM and COMB fractions of CO showed strong antimicrobial activities. The results suggest that The CO may be suitable for development as a food preservative and alternative antioxidant.

This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of internal organs of Aplysia kurodai (AK). The internal organs of AK were extracted with methanol (AKM), which was then further fractionated into four subfractions by using solvent partition method, affording hexane (AKMH), methanol (AKMM), butanol (AKMB), and aqueous (AKMA) soluble fractions. The antioxidative activity of fractions from AK was investigated by measuring the scavenging activities of AK against DPPH radical, peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among the various solvent fractions, AKMB showed a marked scavenging effect against DPPH radical, peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antimicrobial activity was increased in proportion to its concentration by the paper disk method. Among the various solvent fractions, AKMM fractions of AK showed the strongest antimicrobial activities. The methanol extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity against all organisms tested, while the hexane extracts showed antimicrobial activity only against Proteus vulgaris. The results suggest that the AK may be suitable for development as a food preservative and alternative antioxidant.
