  • In Turkey, academic studies on Korea are mostly focused on the Korean war and Korean language and literature. Conversely, in Korea, it seems that academic studies are largely focused on old Turkic history and Turkish language and literature. Unfortunately, on both sides, there is not a satisfiying number of studies on the Turkic diaspora in Korea. However, it is a reality that there was a Turco-Tatar group that lived in Korea at the time of the Japanese occupation between the two world wars. This group became Turkish subjects after World War II and became a bridge between Korea and Turkey. After the Russian revolution, around 1919, some Turco-Tatar groups like the Bashkir and the Misher emigrated to East Asia like the Manchuria region of China and Korea. Beginning from the 1920s, some families moved to Japan, but a group of Turco-Tatar stayed in Korean cities like Seoul (Keijo), Pusan and Daegu. The Turco-Tatar groups of East Asia established schools and mosques in Seoul, Korea; Harbin, Manchuria; Kobe, Nagoya; and Tokyo in Japan. A Moslem printing house (Matbaa-i ${\dot{I}}slamiye$) was also established in Tokyo in the 1930s. Many books, a newspaper and a magazine were published by this printing house. The name of the magazine was Yanga Yapon Muhbiri(New Japanese Courier), and it survived between 1931 and 1938. In this magazine, there were many interesting news and data about Korea and the Turco-Tatars of Korea. In this short article, we will try to bring out the importance of this magazine by giving samples of the articles which were written on the Turco-Tatar diaspora in Korea.

  • Purpose: An underlying factor for the failure of several clinical trials of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) therapies is the lack of an effective method to identify patients who overexpress EGFR protein. The quantitative dot blot method (QDB) was used to measure EGFR protein levels objectively, absolutely, and quantitatively. Its feasibility was evaluated for the prognosis of overall survival (OS) of patients with gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Slices of 2×5 ㎛ from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded gastric cancer specimens were used to extract total tissue lysates for QDB measurement. Absolutely quantitated EGFR protein levels were used for the Kaplan-Meier OS analysis. Results: EGFR protein levels ranged from 0 to 772.6 pmol/g (n=246) for all gastric cancer patients. A poor correlation was observed between quantitated EGFR levels and immunohistochemistry scores with ρ=0.024 and P=0.717 in Spearman's correlation analysis. EGFR was identified as an independent negative prognostic biomarker for gastric cancer patients only through absolute quantitation, with a hazard ratio of 1.92 (95% confidence interval, 1.05-3.53; P=0.034) in multivariate Cox regression OS analysis. A cutoff of 208 pmol/g was proposed to stratify patients with a 3-year survival probability of 44% for patients with EGFR levels above the cutoff versus 68% for those below the cutoff based on Kaplan-Meier OS analysis (log rank test, P=0.002). Conclusions: A QDB-based assay was developed for gastric cancer specimens to measure EGFR protein levels absolutely, quantitatively, and objectively. This assay should facilitate clinical trials aimed at evaluation of anti-EGFR therapies retrospectively and prospectively for gastric cancer.

  • [Purpose] Aerobic exercise training (AT) reverses aging-induced deterioration of arterial stiffness via increased arterial nitric oxide (NO) production. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase, was decreased by AT. However, whether AT-induced changes in ADMA levels are related to changes in nitrite/nitrate (NOx) levels remains unclear. Accordingly, we aimed to clarify whether the relationship between plasma ADMA and NOx levels afected the AT-induced reduction of arterial stifness in middle-aged and older adults. [Methods] Thirty-one healthy middle-aged and older male and female subjects (66.4 ± 1.3 years) were randomly divided into two groups: exercise intervention and sedentary controls. Subjects in the training group completed an 8-week AT (60%-70% peak oxygen uptake [${\dot{V}}O_{2peak}$] for 45 min, 3 days/week). [Results] AT signifcantly increased ${\dot{V}}O_{2peak}$ (P < 0.05) and decreased carotid β-stifness (P < 0.01). Moreover, plasma ADMA levels were significantly decreased while plasma NOx levels and NOx/ADMA ratio were significantly increased by AT (P < 0.01). Additionally, no sex diferences in AT-induced changes of circulating ADMA and NOx levels, NOx/ADMA ratio, and carotid β-stifness were observed. Furthermore, the AT-induced increase in circulating ADMA levels was negatively correlated with an increase in circulating NOx levels (r = -0.414, P < 0.05), and the AT-induced increase in NOx/ADMA ratio was negatively correlated with a decrease in carotid β-stifness (r = -0.514, P < 0.01). [Conclusion] These results suggest that the increase in circulating NOx with reduction of ADMA elicited by AT is associated with a decrease in arterial stiffness regardless of sex in middle-aged and older adults.

  • We have successfully demonstrated metal-ferroel-ectric-insulator-semiconductor (MFIS) devices using Al/LiNbO$_{3}$/SiN/Si structure. The SiN thin films were made into metal -insulator- semiconductor (MIS) devices by thermal evaporation of aluminum source in a dot away on the surface. The interface property of MFIS from 1MHz & quasistatic C-V is good and the memory window width is about 1.5V at 0.2V/s signal voltage sweep rate. The gate leakage current density of MFIS capacitors using a aluminum electrode showed the least value of 1x10$^{-8}$ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ order at the electric field of 300㎸/cm. And the XRD patterns shows the probability of applications of LN for MFIS devices for FeRAMs on amorphous SiN buffer layer.

  • We successfully synthesize water-dispersible CTAB-capped CdSe@ZnS quantum dots with the crystal size of the CdSe quantum dots controlled from green to orange colors. The quenching effect of Fe(DTC)3 is very efficient to turn off the emission light of quantum dots at four molar ratios of the CdSe quantum dots, that is, the effective covering the surface of quantum dots with Fe(DTC)3. However, the reaction with Fe(DTC)3 for more than 24 h is required to completely realize the quenching effect. The highly quenched quantum dots efficiently detect nitric oxide at nano-molar concentration of 110nM of NO with 34% of recovery of emission light intensity. We suggest that Fe(DTC)3-hybridized CdSe@ZnS quantum dots are an excellent fluorescence resonance energy transfer probe for the detection of nitric oxide in biological systems.

  • Most plants of commercial poinsettia cultivars grown from cuttings develop mosaic and chlorotic dot symptoms on leaves. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test showed that they were infected with Poinsettia mosaic virus (PnMV). In a survey of commercially grown poinsettias conducted in Korea, PnMV was detected in ten of ten poinsettia cultivars sampled and in 100% of 178 samples tested. The virus has isometric particles and about 29 nm in diameter. Crystalline virus particles were observed in cytoplasm of cells of diseased plants by transmission electron microscopy. Nucleotide sequence of coat protein gene of PnMV- Kl showed 97.3% homology with that of a German isolate. This is the first report on PnMV in Korea.

  • The detail design of overhead line can be dievided into a pegging plan and MD(Mounting Diagram) process. A program can perform a MD process was already developed and used in Honam High-Speed project. In this study, a pegging plan program which can perform mast distribution automatically is developed. The system is developed based on dot net framework 4.0 and Civil3D 2012 and used spread 4.0 component for grid UI. It can not be directly used a rail horizontal alignment and long-section profile together on drawing. Therefore using Civil3D, mathematical alignment and profile of rail can be accomplished. And this program has an advantage of user friendly operation because of close relationship between the two.

  • Cesium lead halide ($CsPbX_3$) nanocrystals have emerged as a new family of semiconductor nanomaterials that can outperform existing semiconductor nanocrystals owing to their superb optical and charge transport properties. Although these materials are expected to have many superior properties, control of the quantum confinement and isoelectronic magnetic doping, which can greatly enhance their optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, has faced significant challenges. These obstacles have hindered full utilization of the benefits that can be obtained by using $CsPbX_3$ nanocrystals exhibiting strong quantum confinement or coupling between exciton and magnetic dopants, which have been extensively explored in many other semiconductor quantum dots. Here, we review progress made during the past several years in tackling the issues of introducing controllable quantum confinement and doping of $Mn^{2+}$ ions as the prototypical magnetic dopant in colloidal $CsPbX_3$ nanocrystals.

  • A volumetric three-dimensional (3D) display system was presented, which utilizes a rotating two-dimensional (2D) display panel of light emitting diodes (LEDs) to generate more than 10 million volume pixels (voxels) within a cylindrical volume of 165 mm in height and 292 mm in diameter. Due to persistence of vision, momentarily addressed voxel information is perceived and fused into a 3D image. Important cues for depth perception, such as binocular parallax, accommodation, convergence and motion parallax are satisfied automatically and naturally, thus it is suitable for individual or group viewing, without the need for any special visual aids.
