  • This paper describes a novel design method for compensating field time-constant of micro-synchronous machine so that its terminal flux can show the same characteristics as large-scale synchronous machine's. In addition to it, the suggested design method can determine the field time-constant regulator's parameters considered the nonlinearities of micro-synchronous machine such as saturation and loading effect. This method applied to 5kVA micro-synchronous machine, and the digital time-constant regulator with digital AVR were designed such that the short field time-constant, $T_{do}'=1.12\;sec$, can take on the large-scale synchronous machine time constant, $T_{do}'=1.47\;sec$. After determining the parameters of controllers, the real time digital time-constant regulator and digital AVR algorithm were implemented by using the PC with Penumum processor, and the usefulness of suggested real time digital time-constant regulator was verified by observing its good performance on the excitation of micro-synchronous machine.

  • Cobalt was electrodeposited onto chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene/Si/$SiO_2$ substrates, during different time intervals, using an electrolyte solution containing a low concentration of cobalt sulfate. The intention was to investigate the details of the deposition process (and the dissolution process) and the resulting magnetic properties of the Co deposits on graphene. During and after electrodeposition, in-situ magnetic measurements were performed using an (AGFM). These were followed by ex situ morphological analysis of the samples with ${\Delta}t_{DEP}$ 30 and 100 s by atomic force microscopy in the non-contact mode on pristine CVD graphene/$SiO_2$/Si. We demonstrate that it is possible to electrodeposit Co onto graphene, and that in-situ magnetic measurements can also help in understanding details of the deposition process itself. The results show that the Co deposits are ferromagnetic with decreasing coercivity ($H_C$) and demonstrate increasing magnetization on saturation ($M_{SAT}$) and electric signal proportional to remanence ($M_r$), as a function of the amount of the electrodeposited Co. It was also found that, after the end of the dissolution process, a certain amount of cobalt remains on the graphene in oxide form (this was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), as suggested by the magnetic measurements. This oxide tends to exhibit a limited asymptotic amount when cycling through the deposition/dissolution process for increasing deposition times, possibly indicating that the oxidation process is similar to the graphene surface chemistry.

  • Temporal and spatial distributions of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity were investigated at seven sites in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa with a limited water exchange, from March to October 2005. During the study period, salinity and temperature varied $0.1{\sim}29.9\;psu$ and $4.7{\sim}28.1^{\circ}C$, respectively, depending on seasons and sites sampled. A distinct halocline profile showing the maximum density gradient (difference over $20\;psu\;m^{-1}$ between surface and bottom layers) was observed during the rainy season, due to the decrease of salinity in surface layers by freshwater inflow. This result implies that rainfall event is the important factor forming the halocline. On the other hand, the depth and location of haloeline varied with the amount of seawater through the sluice gates and the operation systems (inflow or outflow). High DO (over 300% saturation) was observed at surface layer above the halocline in April when red tide occurred, whereas low DO (below 20% saturation) was at the bottom layer below the halocline in the rainy season. Turbidity ranged $1.5{\sim}80.3\;NTU$ showing the maximum turbidity at the layers above or upper the halocline. As a result, the distributions of DO and turbidity in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa were largely affected by the variation of salinity. Also, when the halocline was formed, the water quality between upper and lower water layers may be expected completely different. This study suggests that the physicochemical characteristics of water in the brackish regions are closely associated with the causes of eutrophication such as red tide and DO deficit.

  • Atmospheric N deposition has far-reaching impacts on forest ecosystems, including on-site impacts such as soil acidification, fertilization, and nutrient imbalances, and off-site environmental impacts such as nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emission. Although chronic N deposition has been believed to lead to forest N saturation, recent evidence suggests that N retention capacity, particularly in the forest floor, can be surprisingly high even under high N deposition. This review aims to provide an overview of N retention processes in the forest floor and the implications of changing C-N interactions for C sequestration. The fate of available N in forest soils has been explained by the competitive balance between tree roots, soil heterotrophs, and nitrifiers. However, high rates of N retention have been observed in numerous N addition experiments without noticeable increases in tree growth and soil respiration. Alternative hypotheses have been proposed to explain the gap between the input and loss of N in N-enriched, C-limited systems, including abiotic immobilization and mycorrhizal assimilation, both of which do not require additional C sources to incorporate N in soil N pools. Different fates of N in the forest floor have different implications for C sequestration. N-induced tree growth can enhance C accumulation in tree biomass as observed across temperate regions. C loss from forests can amount to or outweigh C gain in N-saturated, declining forests, while another type of 'C-N decoupling' can have positive or neutral effects on soil C sequestration through hampered organic matter decomposition or abiotic N immobilization, respectively.

  • A tongue shows physiological and clinicopathological changes of inner organs. Visual inspection of a tongue is not only convenient but also non-invasive. To develop an automat ic tongue diagnosis system for an objective and standardized diagnosis, the separation of the tongue are a from a facial image and the detection of coatings, spots and cracks are inevitable but difficult since the colors of a tongue, lips, and skin in a mouth as well as those of tongue furs and body are similar. The propose d method includes preprocessing with down-sampling and edge enhancement, over-segmentation, detecting positions with a local minimum over shading from the structure of a tongue, and correcting local minima or detecting edge with color difference. The proposed method produces the region of a segmented tongue, and then decomposes the color components of the region into hue, saturation and brightness, resulting in classifying the regions of tongue furs(coatings) into kinds of coatings and substance and segmenting them. Spots are detected by using local maxima and the variation of saturation, and cracks are searched by using local minima and the directivity of dark areas in brightness. The results illustrate the segmented region with effective information, excluding a non-tongue region and also give us accurate discrimination of coatings and the precise detection of spots and cracks. It can be used to make an objective and standardized diagnosis for an u-Healthcare system as well as a home care system.

  • This study was conducted to explore the tensile strength models in granular soil at the full range of unsaturated state. Direct tension experiments were carried out with a newly developed direct tension technique. The measured experimental data were compared with theoretical models developed by Rumpf and Schubert for monosized ideal particulate solids at the unsaturated state. To do this, the soil-water characteristic curve obtained from a suction-saturation experiment was used to define the unsaturation state and the negative pore water pressure with different water content levels, which are important factors in theoretical tensile strength models. The nonlinear behavior of the tensile strength for unsaturated granular soil at the pendular state is appropriately simulated with Rumpf's model. For the funicular and capillary states, the predicted trend by Schubert's model is properly matched with the experimental data: tensile strength steadily increases and reaches a maximum value and then decreases until it reaches zero. This comparison supports the concept that the tensile strength of unsaturated real granular soil can be approximately simulated with theoretical models.

  • Color is basically composed of hue, saturation and value. Many objects are made up with color. When people see color, they feel different emotion because of different combination of hue, saturation and value of different colors. Thus, people feel different feeling about the taste of food depending on its color. Thus, by analyzing what color makes people feel tasty about food, we can make food to look more delicious. When people take pictures of food, theyusually do not consider this into account. However if we apply this technology into taking pictures of food, we can make the food look more delicious. This technology can be applied when people want to upload pictures of food in blog, homepage and twitter and so on. In this paper, we analyze the feelings of color of people and then choose the best color combination to present food. After that we change the original image into the new one based on the analysis of color. This way, we can reflect each user's preference.

  • A new design of the sliding mode control is proposed for the uncertain linear time-varying second order system. The proposed control drives system states to the target point in the minimum time with specified ranges of parametric uncertainties and disturbances. One of the advantages of the proposed control scheme is that the control inputs do not go beyond saturation limits of the actuators. The other advantage is that the minimum arrival time and the acceleration of the second order actuators system can be estimated with given parametric bounds and can be expressed in the closed from; conversely, the designer can select actuators based on the condition of the minimum arrival time to the target point. The superior performance of the proposed control scheme to other sliding mode controllers is validated by computer simulations.

  • Reference models are used in many control algorithms for improvement of transient response characteristics. They provide desired trajectories that the plant should follow. Most control systems have bounded control inputs to avoid saturation of the plant. If we design reference models that do not account for limits of control inputs, control performance of the system may be deteriorated. In this paper, therefore, the way of determining variable reference models for TDC(time delay control) technique is proposed. The variable reference model is determined based on the information of bounded control inputs and reference inputs. This proposed method is also verified by application to the position control experiment using the BLDC motor.

  • This paper proposes an efficient predictive image-compression technique based on vector quantization of blocks of pels. In the proposed method edge contents of blocks control the selection of predictors and block shapes as well. The maximum number of bits assigned to quantizers has been in creased to 3bits/pel from 1/5bits/pel, the setting employed by forerunners in predictive vector quantization of images. This increase prevents the saturation in SNR observed in their results in high bit rates. The variable block shape is instrumental in eh reconstruction of edges. The adaptive procedure is controlled by means of he standard deviation ofp rediction errors generated by a default predictor; the standard deviation address a decision table which can be set up beforehand. eh proposed method is characterized by overall improvements in image quality over A-VQ-PE and A-DCT VQ, both of which are known for their efficient use of vector quantizers.
