  • Effect of nitrogen doping on field emission characteristics of patterned Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) films was studied. The patterned DLC films were fabricated by the method reported previously[1]. Nitrogen doping in DLC film was carried out by introducing $N_2$ gas into the vacuum chamber during deposition. Higher emission current density of $0.3{\sim}0.4$ $mA/cm^2$ was observed for the films with 6 at % N than the undoped films but the emission current density decreased with further increase of N contents. Some changes in CN bonding characteristics with increasing N contents were observed. The CN bonding characteristics which seem to affect the electron emission properties of these films were studied by Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The electrical resistivity and the optical band gap measurements showed consistence with the above analyses.

  • Dimond-like carbon(DLC) films have been deposited by using both rf plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition systems. Effects of deposition conditions, such as dc self-bias, $CH_4$ gas pressure, substrate bias, and $N_2$ partial pressure, on the structural and electrical properties of DLC films are examined. The experimental results obtained have also been discussed by considering a theoretical model for film growth.

  • DLC(diamond-like carbon)박막을 RF PCVD법으로 증착하여 일반적인 증착특성과 마찰.

  • DLC films are deposited by using an FCVA deposition system with a mirror-type magnetic field configuration. Permanent magnets and: magnetic yokes around the cathode have been observed to enhance the mobility of arc spots on the cathode and the stability of arc plasma, Effects of reactor pressures and substrate biases on structural properties of DLC films deposited are investigated. The results show that the highest $sp^{3}/sp^{2}$ fraction is obtained when the films are deposited at a pressure of $3{\times}10^4$ Torr and a bias voltage of - 50 V. The variation of the structural properties due to thermal stress up to 500$^{\circ}C$ is also examined.

  • Si(100) surfaces were topographically modified i.e. the surfaces were patterned at micro-scale using photolithography and DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) fabrication techniques. The patterned shapes included micro-pillars and microchannels. After the fabrication of the patterns, the patterned surfaces were chemically modified by coating a thin DLC film. The surfaces were then evaluated for their friction behavior at micro-scale in comparison with those of bare Si(100) flat, DLC coated Si(100) flat and uncoated patterned surfaces. Experimental results showed that the chemically treated (DLC coated) patterned surfaces exhibited the lowest values of coefficient of friction when compared to the rest of the surfaces. This indicates that a combination of both the topographical and chemical modification is very effective in reducing the friction property. Combined surface treatments such as these could be useful for tribological applications in miniaturized devices such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS).

그리고 EPMA(electron probe micro-analyser) 및 Raman 스펙트럼분석을 통하여 증착층의 구조가 DLC 임을 확인하였다.

  • Pulsed magnetron sputtering of graphite target was employed for deposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. Time-resolved probe measurements of magnetron discharge plasma have been performed. It was shown that the pulsed magnetron discharge plasma density ($∼10^{17}$ $m^{-3}$ ) is close to that of vacuum arc cathode sputtering of graphite. Raman spectroscopy was sed to examine DLC films produced at low ( $U_{sub}$ / < 1 kV) pulsed bias voltages applied to the substrate. It has been shown that maximum content of diamond-like carbon in the coating (50-60%) is achieved at energy per deposited carbon atom of $E_{c}$ =100 eV. In spite of rather high percentage of $sp^3$-bonded carbon atoms and good scratch-resistance, the films showed poor adhesion because of absence of ion mixing between the film and the substrates. Electric breakdowns occurring during the deposition of the insulating DLC film also thought to decrease its adhesion.

  • To reduce the friction losses and the wear amounts in the piston assembly two methods were proposed. One is the modification of surface profile of the skirt part. The surface coating is another method to protect the sliding surfaces. To modify the profile of the skirt surfaces the surfaces were ground to have three different shapes of profiles. Also, several coatings, such as graphite, TiN, and $MoS_2$, and DLC, were used to protect the surfaces of the piston skirts. The specimens of the skirt and the cylinder bores were tested with the reciprocating wear tester. SAE 5W40 engine oil was used in boundary lubrication regime. Among several coatings the graphite and DLC coatings were very effective to reduce the friction forces. Especially, DLC film represented much better tribological performances than the others. The friction coefficient of the graphite coating was the lowest, but the graphite coating was not effective to protect the surfaces.
