  • A meteorological(met) tower is the first structure installed during the planning stages of offshore wind farm. The purpose of this paper is to design the met tower with tripod bucket type support structure and to install the sensors. The support structure consist of a central steel shaft connected to three cylindrical steel suction buckets which is more cheaper than monopile or jacket type. And the remote wind condition sensors and marine monitoring equipment, including adcp, pressure type tide gauge, wave height sensors, and scour sensors, remote power supply are installed. The manufactured met tower constructed on sea area which is in front of Gasa island. All of functions of met tower showed normal operation conditions and the wind data got by remote data collection system successfully.

  • Researchers up to date have introduced several Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques with varying advantages and drawbacks for each. Satellite positioning systems (GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO) based techniques proved to be promising, especially for high natural period structures. Particularly, the GPS has proved sufficient performance and reasonable accuracy in tracking real time dynamic displacements of flexible structures independent of atmospheric conditions, temperature variations and visibility of the monitored object. Tall structures are particularly sensitive to oscillations produced by different sources of dynamic actions; such as typhoons. Wind forces induce in the structure both longitudinal and perpendicular displacements with respect to the wind direction, resulting in torsional effects, which are usually more complex to be detected. To efficiently track the horizontal rotations of the in-plane sections of such flexible structures, two main issues have to be considered: a suitable sensor topology (i.e., location, installation, and combination of sensors), and the methodology used to process the data recorded by sensors. This paper reports the contributions of the measurements recorded from dual frequency GPS receivers and uni-axial accelerometers in a full-scale experimental campaign. The Canton tower in Guangzhou-China is the case study of this research, which is instrumented with a long-term structural health monitoring system deploying both accelerometers and GPS receivers. The elaboration of combining the obtained rather long records provided by these two types of sensors in detecting the torsional behavior of the tower under ambient vibration condition and during strong wind events is discussed in this paper. Results confirmed the reliability of GPS receivers in obtaining the dynamic characteristics of the system, and its ability to capture the torsional response of the tower when used alone or when they are combined with accelerometers integrated data.

  • Numerical investigations have been conducted on the junction that connect the multi-tubular section and the single shell section in order to evaluate applicability of hybrid sections in wind turbine towers instead of conventional single shell towers. Major characteristics in structural details include extension of multi-tubular member into shell end section, installation of wing stiffeners, and different layout of floor beams. Elastic and nonlinear incremental analyses were conducted to examine stress concentration patterns and ultimate behaviors, respectively. Based on evaluation of structural performance due to vertical and horizontal forces, it has been confirmed that installation of floor beams and wing stiffeners sensitively affect ultimate strength of global wind tower.

  • Automated parking systems, which automatically park and retrieve vehicles, have been steadily replacing conventional parking systems. The spiral parking system is a type of automated parking systems that has cylindrical parking tower. We develop an economic design model of spiral parking system based on a recursive optimization and simulation procedure in which the dynamic nature of the parking system can be integrated into the mathematical programming model. The optimal values of design parameters are found that gives the minimum total cost while complying with the desired performance of the system.

  • This paper is to discover how the photogrammetry method can be utilized for recording modern architectural properties. As a result of conducting photogrammetry aimed at the main building and water supply tower of Goesan Middle School, it was possible to measure actually either complicated patterns or a damaged area on the facade. However, there appeared errors in the actual measurement of the hollow or protruded area on the facade to measure actually or of an object in the cylinder form. First, for the actual measurement of the protruded area, it is possible to complete a facade by measuring actually the protruded area separately after dividing it and complementing it on the facade, Second, concerning an object in the cylinder form, it is possible to complete one facade by matching a facade which is measured actually with a Diaver method among the MSR photogrammetry methods, and three dimensional standard coordinates which are obtained through Totalstation.

  • In this study, evaluation of load capacity and CPT-load capacity parameters were performed using calibration chamber tests for different types of piles including straight-side and tapered piles. Various soil conditions were considered in the investigation, aiming at establishing design procedure for foundation of electronic transmission tower structures. Test results show that no significant difference of total load capacity from straight-side and tapered piles, while individual components of base and shaft load capacities were quite different. Based on the test results, values of CPT-load capacity correlation parameters for different pile types were analyzed for the evaluation of both base and shaft load capacities.

  • The desulfurizers facility is cylindrical shape. To operate properly it needs nozzles cleaned, get rid of lime adhesion and sludge, repair the wear and corrosion of facility regularly. For this purpose, workers shall access the ceiling or vertical wall at high place. Ordinary scaffoldings such as steel pipe scaffolding or system scaffolding have been using so that workers can access them. With these ordinary scaffoldings, openings around cylindrical wall are inevitable which make workers can expose always to the risk of falling. The purpose of this study is to develop customized scaffolding to minimize the openings to prevent workers form falling during maintenance it. It consists of a hexagonal central tower and six trapezoidal outer towers. And the bracing among the towers have connected each other for self-standing and for maintaining the structure of towers. Span decks, the circumference footstools, steps, etc. are laid on each floor. The safety is reviewed by structural analysis and performance test. With this study, openings each floor of this scaffold are removed. The gap between the cylindrical wall and the edge of the work stage is approximately 100 mm. Therefore, we expect that workers can work safely and efficiently.

  • For the rational application of LRFD, which is actively applied in Korea, for the study of the pull-out load and the horizontal load, which are insufficient examples, a circular foundation based on the transmission tower foundation, which is a socially important structure, through field tests in single and mixed layer. Factors that can affect the design were studied by analyzing the resistance of each stratum to pull-out and horizontal loads.

  • In this study, experimental analysis was performed about lateral load capacity and behavior of laterally loaded-bored piles for soil conditions and pile shape, i.e. cylindrical and taper piles. Also, Calibration chamber load tests were performed for cylindrical and taper piles considering the variations of relative densities and restraint stresses. According to the results of chamber tests, it was found that, while both vertical and horizontal stresses affect load-responses and ultimate lateral load capacity of laterally loaded piles, effect of the horizontal stress was larger than that of the vertical stress. Effect of lateral load capacity and behavior was relatively small compared to relative density and stress state of soils surrounding piles, but showed a little difference for soil conditions. From comparison between predicted and measured lateral load capacity, it was observed that predicted results differ significantly from measured results. This is mainly due to the fact that the effect of horizontal stress is not considered in the conventional prediction methods.

  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop of several different porous materials which can be used as inserts inside solar volumetric air receivers were experimentally investigated. Generally, porous materials were inserted into solar volumetric air receivers to increase the thermal performance. In the present work, honeycomb (diameter: 100 mm, thickness: 30 mm), laminated mesh (diameter: 100 mm, thickness: 1 mm) are considered as the inserts for the experiment. The experimental apparatus consists mainly of a cylindrical ceramic duct as a receiver and an electric heater as an energy source. This system is an intake open loop, which used as air of working fluid. The temperatures inside the ceramic tube are measured by thermocouples, which are installed at each layer of the porous materials. The pressure-drop experimental apparatus is fabricated alike the above experimental equipment. An acrylic tube is used like as the ceramic tube, which has the same specifications of the ceramic tube. The pressure drop of porous materials inserted in the acrylic tube is measured between front and rear of those by transmitter. The results show that the laminated mesh surpasses the honeycomb of heat transfer and pressure drop increase as the porous material thickness and Reynolds number.
