An object in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is affected by many environmental conditions unlike earth's surface such as, Atomic oxygen (AO), Ultraviolet Radiation (UV), thermal cycling, High Vacuum and Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris (MMOD) impacts. The effect of all these parameters have to be carefully considered when designing a space structure, as it could be very critical for a space mission. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is a high performance thermoplastic polymer that could be a suitable material for space missions because of its excellent resistance to these environmental factors. A thin coating of PBI polymer on the carbon epoxy composite laminate (referred as CFRP) was found to improve the energy absorption capability of the laminate in event of a hypervelocity impact. However, the overall efficiency of the shield also depends on other factors like placement and orientation of the laminates, standoff distances and the number of shielding layers. This paper studies the effectiveness of using a PBI coating on the front bumper in a multi-shock shield design for enhanced hypervelocity impact resistance. A thin PBI coating of 43 micron was observed to improve the shielding efficiency of the CFRP laminate by 22.06% when exposed to LEO environment conditions in a simulation chamber. To study the effectiveness of PBI coating in a hypervelocity impact situation, experiments were conducted on the CFRP and the PBI coated CFRP laminates with projectile velocities between 2.2 to 3.2 km/s. It was observed that the mass loss of the CFRP laminates decreased 7% when coated by a thin layer of PBI. However, the study of mass loss and damage area on a witness plate showed CFRP case to have better shielding efficiency than PBI coated CFRP laminate case. Therefore, it is recommended that PBI coating on the front bumper is not so effective in improving the overall hypervelocity impact resistance of the space structure.
This study investigated the dependence of the various sputtering conditions (Ar pressure: $2{\sim}10\;mTorr$, Power: $50{\sim}150\;W$) and thickness ($50{\sim}1200\;nm$) of Si thin film on the electrochemical properties, microstructural properties and the capacity fading of a Si thin film anode. A Si layer and a Ti buffer layer were deposited on Copper foil by RF-magnetron sputtering. At 10 mTorr, the 50 W sample showed the best capacity of 3323 mAh/g, while the 100 W sample showed the best capacity retention of 91.7%, also at 10 mTorr. The initial capacities and capacity retention in the samples apart from the 50W sample at 10 mTorr were enhanced as the Ar pressure and power increased. This was considered to be related to the change of the microstructure and the surface morphology by various sputtering conditions. In addition, thinner Si film anodes showed better cycling performance. This phenomenon is caused by the structural stress and peeling off of the Si layer by the high volume change of Si during the charge/discharge process.

Lithium cobalt oxide thin film cathode, having thickness of $2.9{\mu}m$ with area of $4cm^2$, was deposited on platinum patterned alumina substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Li/Co molar ratio, which is an important factor for battery performance, was measured as a function of argon working pressure and applied R.F. power. Constant current charge and discharge performances were characterized with high rate discharge and cycling behavior. Using AC impedance analysis, internal resistance of the thin film battery was measured and simulated by proposed equivalent circuit model.

The Fuel Test Loop(FTL) which is capable of an irradiation testing under a similar operating condition to those of PWR(Pressurized Water Reactor) and CANDU(CANadian Deuterium Uranium reactor) nuclear power plants has been developed and installed in HANARO, KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). It consists of In-Pile Section(IPS) and Out-of Pile System(OPS). The IPS, which is located inside the pool is divided into 3-parts; the in-pool pipes, the IVA(IPS Vessel Assembly) and the support structures. The test fuel is loaded inside a double wall, inner pressure vessel and outer pressure vessel, to keep the functionality of the reactor coolant pressure boundary. The IVA is manufactured by local company and the functional test and verification were done through pressure drop, vibration, hydraulic and leakage tests. The brazing technique for the instrument lines has been checked for its functionality and performance. An IVA has been manufactured by local technique and have finally tested under high temperature and high pressure. The IVA and piping did not experience leakage, as we have checked the piping, flanges, assembly parts. We have obtained good data during the three cycle test which includes a pressure test, pressure and temperature cycling, and constant temperature.
As a recycling of Si sludge from Si wafer process, a Si-SiC-CuO-C composite material was synthesized and investigated as an anode material for lithium batteries. The Si sludge consisted of Si, SiC, machine oil, and metallic impurities. The oil and metal impurities was removed by organic washing, magnetic separation, and acid washing. The Si-SiC-CuO-C composite from the recovered Si-SiC mixture was prepared by high-energy mechanical milling. According to the electrochemical tests such as charge-discharge capacity and cycling behavior, it showed the improved cycle performance. The SiC and CuO-related phases were presumed to restrain the volume expansion of the anode and Fe, however, should be removed below 10 ppm prior to synthesis of the composite because it caused the capacity loss of the active material itself.

In this study, the degree of deterioration of concrete was investigated in the laboratory under conditions of carbonation and freeze-thaw cycling, which are the major causes of the deterioration of its performance. In this test, the carbonated concrete was subjected to combined freeze-thaw deterioration tests for up to 300 cycles, and its dynamic elastic modulus and compressive strength were measured. The evaluation of the effect of the water-binder ratio on normal concrete subjected to combined carbonization and freezing-thawing showed that its resistibility against such combined deterioration decreased more rapidly in the concrete with a water-binder ratio of 55 % compared with that having a water-binder ratio of 35 %. In the case where the concrete was blended with a mineral admixture consisting of fly ash and blast furnace slag at the same water-binder ratio, it showed an increase of its resistibility against combined deterioration.
Design and detailing requirements of seismic provisions for Concentrically Braced Frames (CBF) were specified based on the premise that bracing members with large KL/r and low b/t have superior seismic performance. However, relatively few tests have been done to investigate the cyclic behavior of CBF. Therefore, the question lies on whether the compression member of CBF plays as significant a role as what has been typically assumed by design providers. In this paper, existing experimental data were reviewed to quantify the extent of hysteretic energy achieved by bracing members in past compression tests as well as the extent of degradation of the compression force given repeated cycling loading.

PURPOSE. To investigate the fatigue and fracture resistance of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic molar crowns on dental implants and human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Molar crowns (n=48; n=8/group) were fabricated of a lithium-disilicate-strengthened lithium aluminosilicate glass ceramic (N). Surfaces were polished (P) or glazed (G). Crowns were tested on human teeth (T) and implant-abutment analogues (I) simulating a chairside (C, crown bonded to abutment) or labside (L, screw channel) procedure for implant groups. Polished/glazed lithium disilicate (E) crowns (n=16) served as reference. Combined thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TC: $3000{\times}5^{\circ}C/3000{\times}55^{\circ}C$; ML: $1.2{\time}10^6$ cycles, 50 N) with antagonistic human molars (groups T) and steatite spheres (groups I) was performed under a chewing simulator. TCML crowns were then analyzed for failures (optical microscopy, SEM) and fracture force was determined. Data were statistically analyzed (Kolmogorow-Smirnov, one-way-ANOVA, post-hoc Bonferroni, ${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. All crowns survived TCML and showed small traces of wear. In human teeth groups, fracture forces of N crowns varied between $1214{\pm}293N$ (NPT) and $1324{\pm}498N$ (NGT), differing significantly ($P{\leq}.003$) from the polished reference EPT ($2044{\pm}302N$). Fracture forces in implant groups varied between $934{\pm}154N$ (NGI_L) and $1782{\pm}153N$ (NPI_C), providing higher values for the respective chairside crowns. Differences between polishing and glazing were not significant ($P{\geq}.066$) between crowns of identical materials and abutment support. CONCLUSION. Fracture resistance was influenced by the ceramic material, and partly by the tooth or implant situation and the clinical procedure (chairside/labside). Type of surface finish (polishing/glazing) had no significant influence. Clinical survival of the new glass ceramic may be comparable to lithium disilicate.
The durability problem of Prussian blue in non-aqueous $Li_+$-based electrolytes has been due to the degradation of the Prussian blue electrode matrix during the insertion/extraction processes by $Li_+$. In this work, we designed and synthesised the Prussian blue without reducing the electrochromic performance in non-aqueous $Li_+$-based electrolytes. Prussian blue was electrodeposited on a glass which has ITO coating, and the coating solution is a mixture solution of $FeCl_3\;and\;K_3Fe(CN)_6$ with deionized water added HCl, KCl, and LiCl, respectively. The durability of Prussian blue was evaluated by an in-situ transmittance measurement during a continuous and pulse potential cycling test, and measured by electroactive layer thickness due to evaluating the degradation.

We present a new and facile design of a high-performance Li-S cell by integrating a Li2S-impregnated glass fiber separator together with a common sulfur cathode. We find that a considerable amount of Li2S is consumed amidst the first charge, and most of Li2S disappears at the end of the second charge. During the charge process, additional sulfur material is formed and contributes to a significant enhancement of the discharge capacity (~1400 mAh/g), compared with a control cell (~1260 mAh/g) without Li2S. Moreover, the Li2S containing cell exhibits much higher cycling stability (a 31% increase from ~840 to ~1100 mAh/g in the 100th cycle) and rate capability (a 30% increase from ~580 to ~750 mAh/g at 2 C) than the control cell. Our results indicate that adopting Li2S-containing separator is highly effective to improving the electrochemical performances of Li-S cells.
