Laser-assisted machining uses primarily laser power to heat the local area before the material is removed. It not only efficiently reduces the cutting force during the manufacturing process but also improves the machining characteristics and accuracy with regard to difficult-to-machine materials. The prediction of relative deformations between the cutting tool and workpiece is important to improve the accuracy of machined components. This paper presents the deformation errors caused for a cylindrical workpiece by thermal effects in the laser-assisted machine tool using finite element method. The results can be used to increase the cutting accuracy by compensating thermal distortion prior to laser-assisted machining.

This paper describes a fast tool control (FTC)-based diamond turning process for fabricating large-area high-quality micro-lens arrays. The developed FTC unit has a stroke of $48{\mu}m$ and a resonance frequency of 4.9 kHz. Micro-lens arrays were fabricated using a micro-cutting tool with a nose radius of $50{\mu}m$. The FTC unit was integrated with a force sensor so that the initial position of the micro-cutting tool with respect to the workpiece surface could be detected through monitoring the contacting force. The length and depth of the designed parabolic micro-lens profile were $190{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$, respectively. A micro-lens array was fabricated on a cylinder surface over an area of ${\phi}55 mm{\times}40 mm$.
This study aims to examine the effects of the cutting amount at the waistline on the jacket appearance evaluation and movement functionality, and to suggest a proper waistline cutting amount when designing the men's casual jacket for those in their 30's. The researchers prepared 4 kinds of experimental jackets varying the waistline cutting amount: 0.0cm, 0.5cm, 1.0cm, and 1.5cm. The results of the study are as follows: Regarding the front view appearance, the jacket with the 0.5cm cutting amount achieved the highest score (6 out of 9). On the side view and the back view, there was no meaningful difference. However, the jacket with 0.5cm cutting amount achieved the highest score (4 out of 5). On the other hand, on the movement functionality, there was small statistical difference; the 1.5cm experimental jacket received the highest score in the most areas. This is resulted because if the cutting amount was increased, equally with the V-zone area which gives room for movements. This result showed the difference from the previous research of men in their 20’s,where 0.0cm achieved the highest test score for both appearance and movement functionality. Therefore, this study suggests using the 0.5cm and 1.5cm for the waistline cutting amount; for the jacket appearance 0.5cm is the best while the 1.5cm is better for the movement.
The length of study area was about 450m, and it was shown the geological condition of distinguished change of rock by cutting slope. In order to establish a slope stability, we carried out an engineering geological investigations about rock constituent, rock structure and a direction of discontinuous plane. The study area was divided into six section considered by direction of cutting slope, height of slope and geological condition. Analysis of cutting slope stability was carried out with stereo-graphic projection method by DIPS program which was feasible of stability analysis with geometrical correlation for a direction of discontinuous plane and direction of cutting slope. From analysis of cutting slope stability considered by construction, stability and economical efficiency, the slope stability countermeasures such as a high tensile wire net, slope protection method and enhanced retaining wall were established and operated which minimized effect caused by lower end of road on a relaxation of huge rock.

The application of titanium has been gradually rising because the utilizing ranges for low weight and high strength are rapidly increased by the need for improving the fuel economy in production industries such as the aviation and automotive in recent. The purpose in this study is to investigate the appropriate cutting conditions on the life of flat and round end mills by measuring the maximum cutting temperature relative to the machining time, and calculating the wear rates of cutting tool with the spindle speed and feed rate of vertical machining center as a parameter in the titanium roughing cut machining which is widely used in critical parts of aircraft, cars, etc. When the wetted roughing cut machining of titanium with a soluble cutting oil is conducted by the flat and round end mills, the maximum cutting temperatures for a variety of spindle speed and feed rate are measured at ten-minute intervals during 60 minutes by an infrared thermometer, and the wear rates of cutting tool are calculated by the weight ratios based on tool wear before and after the experiment. It is found that the maximum cutting temperature and the wear rates of cutting tool are raised as the cutting amount per tool edge is increased with the rise of feed rate, in this experimental range, and as the frictional area due to the rise of contacting friction numbers between tool and specimen is increased with the rises of cutting time and spindle speed. In addition, the increasing rate of maximum cutting temperature in the flat and round end mills are the highest for the cutting time from 50 to 60 minutes, and the wear rate of cutting tool in the flat end mill is 1.14 to 1.55 times higher than that in the round end mill for all experimental conditions.
This study was carried out to investigate composition and distribution of the soil microarthropods in Pinus rigida plantations following strip-cutting from May 1998 to April 1999. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The individuals of soil microarthropods found during the research periods were 181, 904 and were identified into 21 orders in 7 classes. The classes were Arachnida, Insecta, Malacostra, Pauropoda, Diplopoda, Chilopoda and Symphyla. 2. The population density of the soil microarthropods was 82,962 individuals at the control area, 62,688 individuals at the reserve area and 36,254 individuals at the cutting area. The microarthropods in the control area were 2 times higher than those in the cutting area. 3. Although the major dominant taxa, Acari and Collembola, decreased in densities at the cutting area, the density reduction in Acari was higher than that in Collembola. This resulted in the increase of Collembola in terms of the relative abundance at the cutting area. 4. Among the total soil microarthropods, Arachnida was 59.74%, followed by Insecta of 39.82%. Such two groups comprise 99.56% of soil microarthropods. 5. According to the relative population density, Acari was 99.18% in Arachnida and 59.25% in the total and Collembola 93.99% in Insecta and 37.42% in the total. Therefore, individuals of Acari and Collembola was 96.67% of the total individuals. And the next abundant groups were Hymenoptera (0.95%), Diptera (0.64%) and Pseudoscorpiones (0.39%). 6. The population density of the soil microarthropods fluctuated seasonally, showing the bimodal pattern, being high in fall and spring. The highest density occurred in November and the lowest in July.
To propose a basic material that can improve the crumples in the knee area and can be applied as an element of garment design, the present study examined the elongation rates of the samples by differentiating the number of cutting lines according to the direction of the fabric, and then determined the puckering phenomenon by judging the conditions of the seams based on the looks of seam lines after bi-axil elongation. After the subjective evaluation on the knee areas of both the standard and modified trousers, the following conclusion was drawn : The elongation rates of the samples are: warp (3.98%)cross-legged (-0.2)>squatting down (-0.4); those in the modified trousers feel more comfortable when sitting on a chair (0.2)>cross-legged (0)>squatting down (-0.6). In the cross-legged posture, the modified trousers (0) has higher scores in the subjective evaluation than the standard ones (-0.2). The evaluation on the looks of needleworks in the samples with cutting lines along the direction of the fabric: weft2 (5.0)

The sudden-stop apparatus is made to measure the residual stress of the infinitesimal area at the turning work surface by using the X-ray stress apparatus. This study is trued to make the cutting work the instantaneous stopping state in the normal working state. The behaviour of work material near the tool is estimated. The estimation method is that the distribution of residual stress can be also measured. The object is to clarify and control the mechanism to leave the adequate stress of the finishing surface. It's beginning is due to observe the occurrence state of the residual stress at the cutting work. The result obtained by this study is as follows. The chips are not separated from the work materials at all the cutting experiments of built-up edges or the shearing areas etc. which can be precisely observed by using the sudden-stop apparatus. The strain of movable system which can be seen at the part of working layer means the size of strain. This experiment proves that the working strain should be lessened to make the size of strain control the residual stress happened at the cutting surface.
In laser-assisted machining (LAM), laser beam is used to locally increase the temperature of a workpiece and thus to enhance the machinability. In order to set the temperature of the material removal area of a workpiece at an optimal value, process parameters, such as laser power, feed rate, and rotational velocity, have to be carefully controlled. In this work, the effects of laser power and feed rate on the temperature distribution of a silicon nitride rotating at a constant velocity were experimentally investigated. Using a pyrometer, temperatures at various locations of the silicon nitride were measured both in circumferential and axial directions. The measured temperatures were fitted to a quadratic equation to approximate the temperature at the cutting location. The machining results showed that cutting force and tool wear were decreased when the temperature at the cutting location was increased.
This paper presents the vision-based camber and optimal cutting line detection algorithm for hot-rolling process. It is important to measure the camber of head and tail part of strips because many problems are caused by the camber in the hot-rolling process. The hot-rolling process has time constraints. The camber detection algorithm of head and tail parts requires fast and less complex for satisfying time constraints. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts: measurement of the camber in the head and tail part of strips and decision part of the optimal cutting line of hot-rolled strip. First, we obtain the camber value of the strip from the difference between the real center line and the center line of head, tail part. Second, the head and tail part of strips isn't suitable for strips connections. Therefore, the cutting process is needed in the hot-rolling process. The optimal cutting line is determined by the head and tail images obtained from cameras. The algorithm is applied into the vision system with two area cameras, Matrox image processing board and host PC for verification.
