Scale-invariant feature is an effective method for retrieving and classifying images. In this study, we analyze a scale-invariant planar curve features for developing 2D shapes. Scale-space filtering is used to determine contour structures on different scales. However, it is difficult to track significant points on different scales. In mathematics, curvature is considered to be fundamental feature of a planar curve. However, the curvature of a digitized planar curve depends on a scale. Therefore, automatic scale detection for curvature analysis is required for practical use. We propose a technique for achieving automatic scale detection based on difference of curvature. Once the curvature values are normalized with regard to the scale, we can calculate difference in the curvature values for different scales. Further, an appropriate scale and its position are detected simultaneously, thereby avoiding tracking problem. Appropriate scales and their positions can be detected with high accuracy. An advantage of the proposed method is that the detected significant points do not need to be located in the same contour. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experimental results.
Concrete slab cracks monitoring of modern high-speed railway is important for safety and reliability of train operation, to prevent catastrophic failure, and to reduce maintenance costs. This paper proposes a curvature filtering improved crack detection method in concrete slabs of high-speed railway via graph-based anomalies calculation. Firstly, large curvature information contained in the images is extracted for the crack identification based on an improved curvature filtering method. Secondly, a graph-based model is developed for the image sub-blocks anomalies calculation where the baseline of the sub-blocks is acquired by crack-free samples. Once the anomaly is large than the acquired baseline, the sub-block is considered as crack-contained block. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method performs better than convolutional neural network method even under different curvature structures and illumination conditions. This work therefore provides a useful tool for concrete slabs crack detection and is broadly applicable to variety of infrastructure systems.
Cracks in plate-like structures are some of the main reasons for destruction of the entire structure. In this study, a novel two-stage methodology is proposed for damage detection of flexural plates using an optimized artificial neural network. In the first stage, location of damages in plates is investigated using curvature-moment and curvature-moment derivative concepts. After detecting the damaged areas, the equations for damage severity detection are solved via Bat Algorithm (BA). In the second stage, in order to efficiently reduce the computational cost of model updating during the optimization process of damage severity detection, multiple damage location assurance criterion index based on the frequency change vector of structures are evaluated using properly trained cascade feed-forward neural network (CFNN) as a surrogate model. In order to achieve the most generalized neural network as a surrogate model, its structure is optimized using binary version of BA. To validate this proposed solution method, two examples are presented. The results indicate that after determining the damage location based on curvature-moment derivative concept, the proposed solution method for damage severity detection leads to significant reduction of computational time compared with direct finite element method. Furthermore, integrating BA with the efficient approximation mechanism of finite element model, maintains the acceptable accuracy of damage severity detection.
This article describes 3 dimensional (3D) face recognition system using histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) based on face curvature. The surface curvatures in the face contain the most important personal feature information. In this paper, 3D face images are recognized by the face components: cheek, eyes, mouth, and nose. For the proposed approach, the first step uses the face curvatures which present the facial features for 3D face images, after normalization using the singular value decomposition (SVD). Fisherface method is then applied to each component curvature face. The reason for adapting the Fisherface method maintains the surface attribute for the face curvature, even though it can generate reduced image dimension. And histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) descriptor is one of the state-of-art methods which have been shown to significantly outperform the existing feature set for several objects detection and recognition. In the last step, the linear discriminant analysis is explained for each component. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach leads to higher detection accuracy rate than other methods.

This paper describes an automated detection algorithm of ST-T episodes using global curvature which can connect the isoelectric level in ECG and can eliminate not only the slope of ST segment, but also difference of the baseline and global curve. This above method of baseline correction is very faster than the classical baseline correction methods. The optimal values of parameters for baseline correction were found as the value having the highest detection rate of ST episode. The features as input of backpropagation Neural Network were extracted from the whole ST segment. The European ST-T database was used as training and test data. Finally, ST elevation, ST depression and normal ST were classified. The average ST episode sensitivity and predictivity were 85.42%, 80.29%, respectively. This result shows the high speed and reliability in ST episode detection. In conclusion, the proposed method showed the possibility in various applications for the Holter system.

Electrocardiogram(ECG) signal is one of the unique bio-signals of individuals and is used for personal authentication. The existing studies on personal authentication method using ECG signals show a high detection rate for a small group of candidates, but a low detection rate and increased execution time for a large group of candidates. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical algorithm that extracts fiducial points based on curvature of ECG signals as feature values for grouping candidates and identifies candidates using waveform-based comparisons. As a result of experiments on 74 ECG signal records of QT-DB provided by Physionet, the detection rate was about 97% at 3-heartbeat input and about 99% at 5-heartbeat input. The average execution time was 22.4 milliseconds. In conclusion, the proposed method improves the detection rate by the hierarchical personal authentication process, and also shows reduced amount of computation which is plausible in real-time personal authentication usage in the future.

In this paper we propose a new algorithm for detecting and counting flowers in a complex background based on digital images. The algorithm mainly includes the following parts: edge contour extraction of flowers, edge contour determination of overlapped flowers and flower counting. We use a contour detection technique in Computer Vision (CV) to extract the edge contours of flowers and propose an improved algorithm with a concave point detection technique to find accurate segmentation for overlapped flowers. In this process, we first use the polygon approximation to smooth edge contours and then adopt the second-order central moments to fit ellipse contours to determine whether edge contours overlap. To obtain accurate segmentation points, we calculate the curvature of each pixel point on the edge contours with an improved Curvature Scale Space (CSS) corner detector. Finally, we successively give three adaptive judgment criteria to detect and count flowers accurately and automatically. Both experimental results and the proposed evaluation indicators reveal that the proposed algorithm is more efficient for flower counting.
This paper presents driving path estimation algorithm for adaptive cruise control system and advanced emergency braking system using multi-sensor fusion. Through data collection, yaw rate filtering based road curvature and vision sensor road curvature characteristics are analyzed. Yaw rate filtering based road curvature and vision sensor road curvature are fused into the one curvature by weighting factor which are considering characteristics of each curvature data. The proposed driving path estimation algorithm has been investigated via simulation performed on a vehicle package Carsim and Matlab/Simulink. It has been shown via simulation that the proposed driving path estimation algorithm improves primary target detection rate.

In this paper, lane and curvature detection algorithm based on the curve template matching method is proposed. To eliminate the perspective effect of the original image, the input image is transformed to a top view image. From this top view image, its edge image is created. To increase the accuracy of detection, a novel edge detection method, which shows a strength in lane detection, is proposed. In the first step, straight lanes are detected from the edge image, and then the Curve Template Matching(CTM) method is applied to detect the curved lanes and to find their curvatures. Since the proposed CTM method uses only the simple equations, such as line and circle equations, to detect the curved lane, the algorithm is simple. Moreover, we used the detected lane information in the previous frames to detect the current frame's lanes, the detection results become more reliable. The proposed algorithm has been tested in various road conditions (highway, urban street, night time highway, etc.). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can process about 70 frames per second with the successful lane detection rate over 95% and curvature detection rate about 90%.
Recent research has been devoted and focused on detecting pedestrian and vehicle in intelligent vehicles except for the vulnerable road user(VRUS). In this paper suggest a new projection method which has robustness for rotation invariant and reducing dimensionality for each cell from original image to detect two-wheeler. We applied new weighting values which are calculated by maximum curvature containing very important object shape features and uniform local binary pattern to remove the noise. This paper considered the Adaboost algorithm to make a strong classification from weak classification. Experiment results show that the new approach gives higher detection accuracy than of the conventional method.
