  • Test situations are relatively specific and are experienced by everyone. The major purposes of this overview are to review the current concepts and theories of test anxiety and based on this review to suggest future directions in test anxiety theory and research. Test anxiety can be explained in terms of drive-oriented approach. trait-state anxiety theory, cognitive theory, cognitive and emotional approach, and psychodynamic theory. Usually, high test-anxious students keep the following characteristics : 1) The test situation is seen as difficult, challenging and threatening. 2) The individual sees himself as ineffective, and inadequate in handling the task at hand. 3) The individual focuses on undesirable consequences of personal inadequacy. 4) Self-deprecatory preoccupations are strong and interfere or compete with task-relevant cognitive activity. 5) The individual expects and anticipates failure and loss of regard by others. Future directions in test anxiety research should be focused to elucidate the nature and construct of test anxiety and the etiological factors of test anxiety by conducting research on the relationship between parental or social attitude and test anxiety. The effects of test anxiety on memory, attention, and cue utilization should be performed to elucidate the relationship between test anxiety and performance.

  • Historically, the use of algorithms has been emphasized in the mathematics curriculum at the elementary school mathematics. The current reform movement in our country are seemed to emphasize the importance of algorithms in favor of problem-solving approaches, the conceptualization of mathematical processes and applications of mathematics in real world situations. Recently, children may come to school with a fairly well-developed attitude about mathematics and mathematical ideas. That is, they do not come to school and to learning mathematics with a clean slate. Because they have already formed some partial mathematical concepts in a wide variety of contexts. Many kindergarten children have attended pre-school programs where they played with blocks, made patterns, and started adding and subtracting. It seems that there are psychological change attitudes of the children in upper grades toward learning mathematics. In our elementary school mathematics, almost every student are still math anxious or have developed math anxiety because of paper-pencil test. In these views, this paper is devoted to introduce and apply to second grade students in ND-elementary school in Taegu City the new method for learning addition and subtraction so called ‘Mrs Weill's Hill’, which is believed as a suitable method for children with mathematical teaming disabilities and Math anxiety.

  • This study was carried out to introduce current status and development strategy for an environmental restoration of stream side in Japan, and to consider a methodology which could be effectively applied for the environmental restoration of stream side in Korea. The strategy prospects of environmental restoration in Japan were summarized as follows : 1. When we establish the long term erosion control planning, we should make detail planning after considering of a certain block of watershed units. Because most of the disaster is caused by soil movement which was occurred by water contents. 2. Nowadays, the general torrent erosion control planning system in Japan focused on reducing the sediment such as by placement of erosion control facility and by restoration of afforestation, after calculation of several factors including expected amount of sediment, and the different amount of planned sediment and allowable sediment. 3. In the past, the goal of forest conservation and erosion control planing was to fix the amount of soil movement by construction of permanent facilities. While, the goal of forest conservation and erosion control planning in the future needs to change the techniques to a small and middle scale's soil movement which could prevent soil movement from large scale of soil disasters, but allow soil movement effectively. Also, it is considered to change erosion control dams from non passing type to passing type. 4. Restoration of stream-side ecology, erosion control for the conservation of ecology should be planned and conducted cautiously based on concepts of ecology conservation and development of environmentally sound techniques.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how an undergraduate family diversity course supported students to enhance undergraduate students' understanding of diversity issues and cultural competence that are necessary to work with diverse families and children as future family science professionals. We collected qualitative research data from 108 students who were enrolled in five sections of an undergraduate-level diversity course, Working with Diverse Families and Children , using nine open-ended questions. In the current study, we specifically focused on four questions in relevant to what undergraduate students learned and what they desired to learn more about diversity issues in families grounded in Hollinger's developmental model of ethical reflection. Using inductive and deductive iterative processes and triangulation, we conducted thematic analysis. Overall, our findings showed that undergraduate students understood the core concepts of diversity and cultural competence. However, they understood these issues at different stages of Hollinger's model of ethical reflection after taking the course. Most undergraduate students accomplished their cognitive and empathetic understanding of diversity and were primarily in Stages 1 and 2. We suggest interactive and reflective teaching strategies that may be effective for undergraduate students to challenge their own biases, practice ethical decision, and prepare for social actions as family science professionals.

  • Research over the years has progressively shown substantial broadening of the tumor necrosis factor alpha-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-mediated signaling landscape. Increasingly it is being realized that pancreatic cancer is a multifaceted and genomically complex disease. Suppression of tumor suppressors, overexpression of oncogenes, epigenetic silencing, and loss of apoptosis are some of the extensively studied underlying mechanisms. Rapidly accumulating in vitro and in vivo evidence has started to shed light on the resistance mechanisms in pancreatic cancer cells. More interestingly a recent research has opened new horizons of miRNA regulation by DR5 in pancreatic cancer cells. It has been shown that DR5 interacts with the core microprocessor components Drosha and DGCR8, thus impairing processing of primary let-7. Xenografting DR5 silenced pancreatic cancer cells in SCID-mice indicated that there was notable suppression of tumor growth. There is a paradigm shift in our current understanding of TRAIL mediated signaling in pancreatic cancer cells that is now adding new layers of concepts into the existing scientific evidence. In this review we have attempted to provide an overview of recent advances in TRAIL mediated signaling in pancreatic cancer as evidenced by findings of in vitro and in vivo analyses. Furthermore, we discuss nanotechnological advances with emphasis on PEG-TRAIL and four-arm PEG cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels to improve availability of TRAIL at target sites.
