This study was carried out to determine the proper pin-heading induction time(spawn running time) when different incubation temperature were applied to Pleurotus ostreatus(Chunchu 2ho, Suhan 1ho, Heukpyung). Incubation period was 17 days at 23 and 21 days at 17 for Chunchu 2ho, 17 days at 23 and 26 for Heukpyung, and 22~23 days at 17~23 for Suhan 1ho. Incubation period for Suhan 1ho was not significantly affected by incubation temperature. The time required for initial pin-heading was 4~5 days at 17, 20, 23 and 26 for Chunchu 2ho as well as Heukpyung, and was 3 days at 17, 20, 23 and 5~6 days at 26 for Suhan 1ho. As the incubation period became longer, the available fruit-bodies at Chunchu 2ho were made more but they were short. The yield of Chunchu 2ho and Heukpyung increased when incubated for 22~27 days at 20~23 and that of Suhan 1ho also increased when incubated for 22~23 days at 17~23.

We examined for differences in the growth and fertility of microscopic stages between Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida in crossed temperature×irradiance (12, 17, 22℃×20, 60 μmol photons m–2s–1) and daylength×irradiance (8, 12, 16, 24 h×20, 60 μmol photons m–2s–1) experimental designs. After 13 days in culture, maximum gametophyte growths of the two species were obtained under the following combinations of factors: 17℃×60 μmol photons m–2s–1 and 24 h daylength×60 μmol photons m–2s–1. C. costata gametophytes produced sporophytes about 6 days earlier than those of U. pinnatifida. Sporophyte densities were highest in the 12 h daylength×60 μmol photons m–2s–1 combination after 20 days in C. costata (9.7 plants mm–2) and 26 days in U. pinnatifida (9.1 plants mm–2). However, optimal growth conditions for the microscopic sporophytes differed between species: 17℃×60 μmol photons m–2 s–1 for C. costata, 12℃×60 μmol photons m–2 s–1 for U. pinnatifida. Thus, C. costata gametophytes grew faster and produced sporophytes earlier than those of U. pinnatifida, even though the haploid gametophytes of the two species responded similarly to environmental conditions. Optimal growth temperatures for the microscopic sporophytes also differed between species.
Copper ($CuSO_4$) has been widely used to control algae and pathogens in fish culture ponds. However, its toxic effects on fish depend not only on its concentration in water but also on water quality. The susceptibility of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli to copper was evaluated at three water-temperatures (WT; 18, 23 and $28^{\circ}C$) for 4 days. After the exposure of two copper concentrations (100 and $200{\mu}g/L$), a hematological effect was exerted on rockfish, by causing changes in red blood cell count and hematocrit value at $28^{\circ}C$. Total protein levels of the fish showed a tendency of co-increase with glucose depend on the WT, after copper exposure. However, the plasma calcium and magnesium levels were significantly increased at $200{\mu}g/L$ copper, regardless of the WT. Enzymes activities including ALT and LDH in serum were also significantly increased depend upon the copper treatment only. This indicates that inorganic components and enzymes activities were sensitive indexes to stress by toxicant such as copper. The cortisol levels were significantly elevated by both WT rising and copper treatment in serum of rock fish. In conclusion, these changes can be seen as an initial response to temperature stress and as a sustaining response to copper exposure. The present findings suggest that a simultaneous stress by temperature change and copper exposure could accelerate an alteration of hematological and plasma biological parameters in the rockfish.

The objective of the present study was carried out to clarify the effects of deep sea water on the growth and maturation of $Porphyra$ (Rhodophyta, Bangiales). Foliose thalli for indoor culture were collected from Yeongok ($P.$$okamurae$) in Gangwon Prefecture, Tongyeong ($P.$$suborbiculata$ f. $latifolia$) and Namhae ($P.$$yezoensis$ f. $narawaensis$) in Gyongnam Prefecture respectively. Monospores were cultured at five temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$) with a photon irradiance of $80{\mu}m^{-2}s^{-1}$ under photoperiods of 14L:10D and 10L:14D in surface, deep and mixed seawater in respectively. The fast growth of foliose thalli were observed in $P.$$suborbiculata$ f. $latifolia$ cultured at deep seawater under $15^{\circ}C$ and 10L:14D. In three species, the optimum growth occurred at 10 and $15^{\circ}C$ under deep and mixed seawater and short day-length. In general, monospores from the cultured thalli were liberated within three weeks after incubation under $10-25^{\circ}C$ and both photoperiods. From the result of this study, deep seawater is considered that the natural species of the genus $Porphyra$ can be useful for the development as the new cultivars.
The growth characteristics of Commercially Developed Nitrifying Bacteria (CDNB) were studied in laboratoryscale. CDNB, a pure, artificially isolated bacterium, was cultivated to produce Cultivated Nitrifying Bacterium Group (CNBG). The average ammonia removal rate of CDNB was 0.0234g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr. CNBG was produced in the batch reactor and Specific Nitrification Rate (SNR) was determined at 0.0107g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr. The SNR of CNBG was lower than the SNR of CDNB because the diverse and multi-cultured microbial growth took place during cultivation. The effect of the temperatures and the mixing ratios of sewage and culture solution on the SNR of CNBG was studied. The SNR of CNBG, 0.0107g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr at $27^{\circ}C$, decreased to 0.0048g $NH_4^+-N/g$ MLSS/hr at $15^{\circ}C$, and temperature coefficient (${\Theta}$) was calculated to be 1.07. With the varied sewage mixing ratios, the SNR of CNBG remained unchanged. Activated sludge reactors maintaining an MLSS of 2,000mg/L at HRT of 4 h were operated under conditions in which dosage of Concentrated CNBG Solution (CCNBGS, 10,000mg MLSS/L) and application method of CNBG were varied. The reactor with 20mL of CCNBGS took shorter time to oxidize $NH_4^+-N$ reaching 1mg/L than the reactor with 5mL of CCNBGS showing that higher dosages were associated with greater mass removal of $NH_4^+-N$. However, the total removal was not great. In terms of different methods of CNBG application, reactor seeded with 20mL of CCNBGS took 3days to reach 1mg/L of effluent ammonia concentration while reactor dosed with 20% (v/v) CNBG implanted media took 2days. Both the control reactor and the reactor dosed with 20% (v/v) media only did not reach 1mg $NH_4^+-N/L$ after operating 18days. The reactor with CNBG implanted media had the highest $NH_4^+-N$ removal rate because of maintaining high concentration of Nitrifying Oxidizing Bacteria (NOM), and is regarded as an appropriate method for the activated sludge process.
Fed on commercial flounder diet at 20, 23 and $26^{\circ}C$ in semiclosed culture system for 32 weeks, the juvenile red drum (1.2 g) showed linear increase in daily feeding rate (DFR), growth (g/fish) and specific growth rate (SGR) with increasing temperature. In the second experimental series, the young red drum (214 g), cultured at densities of 2.16, 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ in flow-through tanks at water temperatures from 12.3 to $27.2^{\circ}C$ for 25 weeks, grew faster at the stocking density of 2.16 kg/$m^3$ than at the densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ the difference in growth observed at the stocking densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ was not significant. The DFR and SGR were also significantly higher for the density group of 2.16 kg/$m^3$. Briefly, growth of the red drum increased with increasing tested range of temperature and was also faster with decreasing stocking density. However, the total growth (g/tank) increased with increasing stocking density.

The effects of food, temperature, salinity, and rearing density on the survival and growth of the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus, were studied. With regard to food, the larval survival rate to zoea IV was the highest (53.9%) in the mixed feed group (rotifers+ Artemia), followed, in order, by the rotifer, commercial feed, and Artemia groups. The growth of young crabs reared on different diets was the highest in group VI. The survival rate to zoea II at 20 to $30^{\circ}C$ ranged between 77.2% and 83.1%, and was the highest for crab I (17.3%) at $25^{\circ}C$. When young crabs were cultured individually at four different temperatures (20, 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$), the growth did not differ significantly at 25 to $30^{\circ}C$, but was higher than at $20^{\circ}C$. The survival rate of larvae to crab I was 12.7 and 11.4% at 25 and 28 psu, respectively, while all of the larvae died at 15 psu. For young crabs, there was no significant difference in growth and survival from 20 to 30 psu. The survival rate decreased with increasing rearing density from zoea I to crab I. Each molting cycle took 1 month from crab I to VIII. Subsequently, the interval increased with growth. The mean body weight of crab XV after 24 months was $428.05{\pm}57.63\;g$.
Since the growth and quality of oak mushrooms are sensitively affected by environmental conditions, an adequate environmental control is very essential to improve the yield and quality under protected cultivation. In this study, the diameter, thickness, length and hardness of cap and stipe, the dry weight, fresh weight and moisture content of the mushrooms were analyzed under the environmental conditions such as night air temperatures (control, $5{\~}11^{\circ}C$ and $12{\~}18^{\circ}C$), relative humidities in the daytime (control, humidifying for 6 h and 12 h), and wind velocities (control, fan-operation for 6 h and 12 h). At a lower night temperature, the quality of the mushrooms was improved, and considered to be optimum at $3{\~}8^{\circ}C$ in terms of fresh weight and quality. At $70{\~}80{\%}$ of relative humidity in the daytime, the fresh weight was increased, but the quality decreased. Considering the quality, the relative humidity in the daytime is adequate at around $50{\%}$. At 6 h of maintaining the wind velocity at $1{\~}2\;my{\cdot}s^{-1}$, the growth and quality were better, but the lightness became higher at 12 h although the fresh weight was reduced by evaporation. It is concluded that even though both of the yield and quality are not easily improved at a same time, optimum approaches should be required by using the relationship among environmental factors and the growth and quality.
The properties of polygalacturonase by Ganoderma lucidum in liquid culture were investigated. The enzyme was composed of an endo- and an exo-polygalacturonase. The endo- and exo-polygalacturonase were purified approximately 56 and 9.2-fold, respectively, through ammonium sulfate fractionation, gel filtration on Biogel P-100, anion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, gel chromatography on Sephadex G-150 and re-gel chromatography on Sephadex G-150. The endo- and exo-polygalacturonase had higher affinity for apple pectin than for citrus pectin or pectic acid. The Km values of the endo- and exo-polygalacturonase for apple pectin, determined on the Lineweaver-Burk plot, were 1.44 and 10.6 mg $ml^{-1}$ for apple pectin, respectively. Purified endo-polygalacturonase was found to be homogeneous electrophoretically and had a molecular weight of 54,000 estimated on SDS polyacrylamide gel. The optimal pH for the activity of the enzymes was 4.0. The endo- and exo-polygalacturonase were stable in the pH range of 4.0 to 6.0 and 3.5 to 5.5, respectively. The optimal temperatures of the endo- and exo-polygalacturonase were 40 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. The exo-polygalacturonase was more resistant to heat than the endo-polygalacturonase, requiring heating for 40 min at $80^{\circ}C$ for complete inactivation. The activity of the endo-polygalacturonase was increased by $Ca^{++}$ and $Mn^{++}\;ions$, while that of the exo-polygalacturonase was increased by $Ca^{++}\;ion$ only, and was not affected by $Mn^{++}\;ion$.

The biodegradable hyaluronic acid(HA) membranes cross-linked with lactide using the crosslinking agent, 1-ethyl-3(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide(EDC) were prepared as a potential biocompatible material for tissue engineering. HA membranes having different mechanical properties were synthesised by varying degree of the mole ratio of lactide to HA, EDC concentration, and crosslinking temperature. HA membranes were degradable in water solution and the degradation became slower with the increasing mole ratio of lactide to HA. HA membranes were sterilized using ethylene oxide gas and extracted with cell culture medium for 24 h at $37^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm. Cytotoxicity of the extract was tested using NIH/3T3 mouse embryo fibroblast as a model cell. Growth inhibition was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes with the mole ratios of lactide to HA, 5 or 10, and 10% EDC concentration, however 11% of growth inhibition was observed in the extract with the mole ratio of 13. Growth inhibition was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes prepared with 5% EDC or 10% EDC and the mole ratio of lactide to HA, 10, however 12% of growth inhibition was observed in the extract with 20% EDC. Cytotoxicity was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes prepared at varying crosslinking temperatures, $15^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C,\;and\;28^{\circ}C$ with the mole ratio of lactide to HA, 10 and 10% EDC.
